Private Tour of Naples-Pompeii, Sorrento and Amalfi Coast

We used APTours and this is indeed a good price. It is actually a new lower price as they recently lowered them.

This is one place you do not want to skimp....... a good reputable company will be sure and get you back to the ship on time.

Also.... you really need to remember there is a difference in a Driver and a Guide. The driver will get you from A to B to C etc..... but no info, history, etc etc..... they are expensive as their costs are ...... car, maintenance, insurance, gas ($10 a gallon) and their time. A guide (they must be licensed in Italy) that will be used in the major sites must go thru an extensive process to be licensed thereby assuring you a quality product. Actually - Europe is expensive. I always say "whatever you think you will need - double it"

I second APTours, we used them in June and we had a fantastic time, they had a tour guide for us in Pompeii she was great, I was so glad I used them.

We were in Naples on August 16, 2009 and we hired a small tour company that was amazing. We were 7 people and had a Mecerdes 8 passenger van with English speaking driver Alex from Alnax Limousines. He has a wonderful personality and his English is amazing. We paid 500 Euros for the 7 of us and he arranged for a private guide of Pompeii (100 Euros). We also used his company in Livorno and airport transfer to Piazza Navona hotel (65 Euros for the 7). He gave us a free guided tour of Rome because we had given him quite a bit of business. Very knowledgeable and professional - We would highly recommend this company. I don't know what Alnax would charge for the four of you but I'm sure it would be less than what we paid.

There website is www.alnaxlimousines.com

Does anyone know if there are taxi's at the docks that will take us to Sorrento, and are there taxis for the return.

My husband and I have been to Pompei and toured the Almalfi Coast, but would like to spend a leisurely day in Sorrento.

You can email me at mshilton@aol.com

Thank you

Another suggestion: I don't know if you guys have settled on a tour company but if not here's hopefully a helpful suggestion. Easitalytours, we used them last month on our tour of Italy and we has a wonderful time with them.

If you need further information do not hesitate to ask.

I'm also thinking of easitalytours for an all-day tour from the port of Naples. They offered me a 6-person van deal which seem pretty good but then only as good as the tour operator. Can you give me some more feedback on your experience with this tour company? You can contact me at

mleveene@optonline.net

Thanks

We used Tourofitaly last year. Giovanna was fabulous. There were just 4 of us. He knew exactly what to see and when--even selected the reataurant (it was our friend's special b'day). He would have taken us wherever we wanted but we let him be the judge, as he is a native of Sorrento. The fee was fair (about $500 for 4 of us--still cheaper than the ship tour) and we were with only the 4 whcih was great.

We emailed him with no problem and used his site when sending him our credit card numbers - no problem. site is tourofitaly.com

Only he drives. His son works in the office and emails--both speak English. It was one of the heights of the cruise.I actually got his info on this site (cruise critic)

:mad:We were on a recent Regent cruise and wanted a driver to take us to two towns along the Amalfi Coast. We hired Anthony Buonocore after finding his name on a trip review. Anthony charged 300 euros for seven hours, which was reasonable, compared to the other drivers. However, we should have known when we saw his dirty car that this was not going to be a great trip. While we requested to see Ravello and Positano, he insisted that we should see Amalfi (his birthplace) and only gave us 15 minutes in Ravello. He spent most of the trip on his cellphone, constantly taking calls and checking for messages. After lunch in Amalfi, which was supposed to be in Positano, he skipped Positano altogether, claiming that he did not have the time to show it to us. THEN he drove about 20 mph back to the ship, because he was nearly 1 hour early. Whatever you do, do not hire Anthony Buonocore. This tour was so terrible we simply had to laugh.

I'm with Kathy in recommending Rome in Limo. We used them for tours of Rome, Sorrento and Naples. I remember docking at Sorrento and joking that the men in suits with the Mercedes vans were there for us and they were! We had three great tours with them and would definitely use them again.

We've worked with APTours for a couple of different tours over the years. They are very accomodating, their drivers have great English, and their cars/vans are clean. Their prices are very competative. There are three of us and we have worked through cc Meet and Mingle to arrange additional pax to make the prices more reasonable.

You could try "Share a Shore Excursion" and join up with 2-4 more people, which would bring the cost down considerably and still give you the benefit of a private tour. We used them for Rome and connected, through the website with 3 other couples for the day. I think we ended up paying about 75 euros pp + admission fees. We had a great, personalized day at a good cost and met some nice people too.

That sounds pretty much the going rate for the tour you want to do.

I had planned to take the hydrofoil to Sorrento, then the Circumvesuviana train back to Pompeii and on to Naples, then taxi back to the ship. My plan was foiled when the Grand Princess docked at the opposite end of the pier from the hydrofoil/ferry pier. Princess announced a shuttle would be available. The first hydrofoil left at 9:00, so we were off the ship at 8:15 only to be told the shuttle wouldn't start until 9:00. We were very disappointed, but a persistant taxi driver started talking to us, and we ended up hiring him for 200 EUROs (just two of us) to take us to Pompeii then on to Sorrento. We had him for 8 hours as our own personal driver. He wasn't a licensed guide, but it was wonderful. It was like living the life of the "rich and famous". We stopped where we wanted, and wasn't forced to go anywhere we didn't want to go. He escorted us across busy streets, carried our packages for us, recommended a nice restaurant for lunch, took us on a mini-tour of Naples (even though that wasn't in our initial proposal). It was expensive, but it was the best day of our 21 day trip.

There are plenty of taxi drivers at the port of Naples, all lined up waiting for folks to come off the cruise ships. You could always look for one with a large vehicle (most are smaller cars). They will usually haggle the price, and it is usually for the vehicle, not pp.

Have a great trip!

wow, I can not believe how many different companies have come to light here since I started taking tours 8-10 years ago. I have to say, I have been using Joe Bananas Limos or italytoursharing.com for the last 3-4 years and they have been great. They have built an amazing reputation and always get you back to the ship on time. I have also used RIL one year and they were good too although I prefer Italytoursharing.com or Joe Banana Limos ( if you want a private tour). When I first started using the tour companies the tour sharing options were not even available so that shows you how many times I have been going to Italy, lol. Going back in June. Can not wait!!!

Personally, I would use a company who has the reputation here on cruise critic that is outstanding IMO.
