Norwegian Gem - smoking in cabins?

I'm looking for a last minute booking and think I might be able to get a cabin on the Norwegian Gem but I am concerned about smoking.:(

I read somewhere that smoking in cabins is allowed and (apart from the safety factor) being non-smokers, my husband, son and I would hate to be sleeping in a cabin which stinks of smoke

Has anyone here been on the Gem and if so was the smell of smoke noticeable?

You can smoke in cabin, since my husband smokes (usually on the balcony) I called and asked since it is listed as non smoking. The steward usually cleans and airs the rooms between guests.

all NCL ships are smoking in all Cabins but they do an excellent job of cleaning them out and I never have had a problem. If you do ask them to change all the linen and bedspreads and do a special cleaning. they will happily do it....if there is an issue ask for the head housekeeper and if that isn't to you satisfaction ask for the hotel director...

Still, if smoking is allowed in cabins, it is no doubt allowed in many public venues where it would affect other passengers. While I respect smokers right to smoke, I choose cruise lines where a non-smoker is respected as well.

no actually the number of places you can smoke in public is very small....and is mostly in the Casino. After that its the open deck only...

Smeyer is correct. There are very limited public areas where smoking is allowed: The casino, the VIP lounge and nightclub, the cigar bar (if I remember correctly) and maybe one or two other areas. However, all cabins are smoking cabins. As a reformed smoker (you know we are the worst:rolleyes:) I couldn't smell a trace of smoke in the cabins. You should be fine.

I'm really happy for you but this was not a response to the OP's question and I was hoping this post would not turn into a rant.

On the Jewel class ships-my only experience -there is no smoking indoors at all, except in cabins and the Casino. Most smokers congregate in the great Outdoors-starboard side-, in the partly covered outdoor bar on13- or at the ashtrays placed on deck 7 or 13.

Why do you say it is no doubt allowed in many public venues? You obvioulsy are making assumptions which happen to be incorrect. If you choose a cruiseline that respects non smokers, I'm very surprised that cruiseline is not NCL as they are very restrictive as to where people smoke in public areas.

Hey Tiyana... what or where is the VIP lounge? The only inside place we have ever found to smoke on NCL ships has been the casino and cigar bar. We do not like smoking in the cigar bar because you always get looks from the cigar folks in there smoking... 8-), so we have only had the casino. I honestly did not even know there was a VIP lounge, other than at the embarkation port. And I haven't seen any night club where you could smoke.

The Spirit has a nightclub adjacent to the casino (you can only get to it THROUGH the casino) where smoking is allowed at the bar. But I'm not aware of any other NCL ship with a similar setup.

Wow! I did not know that. I wonder if they consider that section the casino bar and therefore can have smoking in there?

I have never smelled any remnants of leftover smoke in any NCL cabin upon embarkation. I wish hotels would use whatever product NCL uses! Anyone know what product they use?

I have to say that I only found out now 3 weeks away from my cruise that NCL allowed smoking in their cabins....I wasn't happy :(

Here in the UK smoking is not allowed in public. If you want to smoke you have to go outside in bars, workplaces...anywhere really.

My family and I don't come into contact with cigarette smoke at all now :D, even when we go for a meal.

Hotels in the UK have smoking and non smoking rooms and I was surprised and disappointed that NCL don't have this option it would save them $$$$'s in cleaning and decorating costs.

I hope that I won't be disappointed with the freshness of my cabin or the ship because this is a hard earned holiday for me and my family.

I have never smoked and my mom is a reformed smoker with breathing issues. We also were concerned. But it has been a non-issue. Once our stateroom reeked of stale cigarettes when we boarded. All we had to do was report it to housekeeping. They asked us to give them a few hours and when we returned it was fine. There was not even a hint of what we had smelled before. We have been lucky, we have never had neighbors whose smoking in their cabin or on their balcony has affected us in any way.

It is unrealistic to expect smokers to go on a cruise for several days and not smoke. I have talked to smoking friends and relatives and most are addicted. Slowly they have fewer and fewer places to go to smoke, and I can see it getting more and more restrictive. But I am sure NCL doesn't want to alienate one segment of their passenger base to benefit another.

Believe it or not, I have been very fortunate that if a smoker comes too close to my mom and we ask nicely, they are all mostly very nice and thoughtful.

Unfortunately I like to gamble but the casino is pretty bad. I usually go during the day when it is less crowded. It would be great if NCL could establish a section of the slots as non-smoking like I had experienced on Celebrity. Just a thought.

Hopefully you will have a great time on your cruise.

hi

we have sailed on the gem twice , first time in cabin # 9080, second time in cabin # 10072... never once did i smell cigarette smoke in either cabin, or even in the hallway... the only place i smelled cigarette smoke was in the casino, and the hallway leading up to the casino,... but if you like to gamble you have to put up with it... especially while your winning LOL !!!!!:D
