Good advice for all

Hi Folks,

While on Crown I heard a number of storries about folk leaving cameras, wallets and phones behind at lunch or on the sun loungers, some times by accident others thought it was safe to do so guess what most were never seen again, others dropped stuff while on trips one I heard off got pick pocketed and had all credit cards all cash in his wallet.

Take care when out there, follow the ships good advice about not wearing expensive watches, carrying more money than you need etc,

and why oh why would you think it safe to leave high value items lying around on a cruise ship and expect them to still be there on your return.

And stay on the tourist routes.

My husband was mugged in Istanbul when we were on the way back to the ship. We were on the wrong side of the bridge, away from the tourists.

Take a picture of your contact information and have that be the first shot in your camera. In case the camera was lost and not stolen you will have a better chance of getting your memory card back. I left my water proof camera at a swim-up bar last weekend. Someone turned it in to lost and found before I realized it was missing. The concierge called and left a message about retrieving it.

Thanks for the reminder!

DW always takes her real gold jewelry - we carry insurance riders for anything over $100 value which covers theft, casual loss, loss of a stone out of a piece. It is relatively cheap. Does not cover cash though.

Now that is a good idea.

DH left a good hardback book on a sunbed to go in for a swim. When he got back the book was gone.

He spent the rest of the cruise checking what everyone was reading.:p

He didn`t find it.

I just returned from my cruise a few days ago and someone I met also had their book stolen near the pool area. What a strange thing to steal - why not just go to the ship's library and check one out?

I've seen books get thrown away (or overboard) when someone thinks they are being used by a chair-hog. Not that you were hogging lounge chairs since you just went for a swim...but maybe someone thought you were and disposed of your book for you. There are always people on these boards threatening to do that.

Thanks for the good advice. We were on another lines ship several years ago and people were having their wallets lifted. Several happened in the casino. Same cruise 7 people missing from muster, hmmm, never heard what happened to them. I admit I did not use the safe on our last cruise and everything was fine. We were on the Royal several years ago and I had some jewely stolen out of the LOCKED safe, princess never cared, I do not take good jewelry anymore. Really appreciate the wakeup call, but a book, isn't that what the library is for?

The bottom line is this.... (1) Items certainly get "left behind" in all manners on a ship, or (2) Items may get "separated" from you on purpose on a cruise ship. Either way, I am a HUGE proponent of personal identification of my stuff!!

You can easily make labels for your sailing (on your computer) that state your name, ship, sailing date and cabin number. I plaster these on anything we carry... carry ons, pool bag, camera bag, cell phone, books, whatever. I think 97.4% of people will turn something into lost & found... (OK, I made that number up. Do you think it's higher or lower?) Anyway, your labels may help to ensure that your things will be returned (but not necessarily in a theft situation).

I personally will never travel with valuables.. it's just too silly.

I am not traveling to impress others with "real jewels"... my goal is to create "real memories:. JMHO.

Shogun...your dog is beautiful...a Samoyed or American Eskimo...I had a wonderful female Samoyed and now have a male American Eskimo...both beautiful breeds and wonderful dispositions...sorry know it's OT, but had to comment.

so sad to think that you cannot leave a book on your chair while you cool off in the pool and expect it to be there upon your return :( as one poster said they even have a library on deck...

If I ever saw someone throwing an item like that overboard I would contact the nearest crew member and report it.

I try to not leave my cruise card inside of things like books when I go swimming. Not all of my swimsuits have pockets, though.

I bought a $20 water wallet last year and it came in very handy. I had my wallet and camera in it. I went in the water and everything was bone dry. I accidentally ripped it one of the last days and i think the seal may be corrupted now. I will test it in the sink. I highly recommend them.
