No more free drinks at Captain's Party?

I'll guarantee you Carnival won't miss those who don't show up. They will' date=' however, continue to appreciate those of us who have always gone and who have always enjoyed the event and who will continue to go....and buy our own cocktails...... It sure will be less crowded......[/quote']

No, they won't miss those that don't show up, but if it gets to be you and two others, they'll stop that foolishness altogether, now won't they? It won't be worth the captain's time.

And you don't need to have a reception to buy your own drinks. People do it all the time. I guess they have a party every night, and they only invite people that want to have a good time like they do.

You've missed the entire point of this event.

It is to be welcomed onboard by the Captain' date=' the officers and bridge staff and have an opportunity to listen to some music and enjoy a cocktail before dinner.

It's NOT to provide as many free drinks as you can consume in under an hour.[/quote']

I know what the point of the gathering is for but the real point is people don't really go to meet the Captain they go for the drinks. We have only gone to one of these parties and the Captain and crew was not even there. The only reason we went was because it was our first cruise and was trying to do everything. I could really care less about the party. One who pays to get drunk is no differant than one who gets drunk for free. You put those two groups together and they still drunk. If you want a nice social gathering I don't think you will find it on a FUN SHIP! Not from what I have seen.;)

Nor for the welcome aboard party........

Here's a link to the Capers to show the announcement:

I dont need your link.. my last two cruises were on the Miracle and Big Sexy was on both times.. and it was a running joke with him mentioning all the times and places one could get free drinks..

"Go to the (INSERT OCCASSION).. at least you can drink free.. just take care of the waiters.."

I find it very sad that someone coould be so opiionated and hypocritical and not realize how ridiculous she sounds.:(

For US, the Captain's Party is one of the things that makes our cruise enjoyable - it's definitely in the top ten reasons we choose Carnival. Frankly, if they eliminate the free drinks at the party, we'd be more likely to try out some of the other cruise lines in the future. May seem silly, but it's the truth. The Captain's Cocktail party has always been a highlight of our cruise, and it's something we would definitely miss.

I know your kidding. YOu would really quit over this?

As to what's civilized - and how it impacts others... I really doubt Carnival could afford to serve Lobster or beef or maintain their low price levels if they were not making so much money on the things you would characterize as glutonous. It's irrelevant what Carnival can or cannot afford. It's the idea that just because it's possible doesn't mean one has to eat like a pig........and "things" cannot be gluttonous......

So... the next time you see a guy on a cruise who has had a couple too many - thank him for subsidizing your next meal and don't begrudge him a couple watered down 6 oz drinks from the Captain. ;)

No way would I thank a drunk for being a drunk. I rarely acknowledge people with no self control who are acting like morons.

250 Cruises while there is so much misery in the world? Personally, I'm envious, but with just 15 or so cruises under my belt (and looking at your profile we appear to be about the same age) I'm often preached to by realtives who don't understand why we waste so much money on cruising. So there clearly is a perspective issue.

I really don't think you have the moral compass to constatly stand in judgemnt of your peers on charges of "gluttony." Just because you can take 250 cruises, doesn't mean you should. Same as the drinks. ;)

I woun't call you irresponsible, childlike, self indulgent, or any of the other names you've called other folks. I will state that you are a ginourmous hypocrite.

You mean like this? 2 were plated plus 6 extra for me

Last year on the Splendor was the first time I even tired the lobster. Maybe it is just me but I did not like them, they had no flavor. I will stick with the prime rib.

Gma your said it the best and you showed your class. I think they are doing away with the free drinks because of the rude behavior by the passengers who grab the drinks off the tray and then cause the tray to fall. I also have many cruises and don't bother with the free drink gathering anymore. I like the Princess most travelled luncheon and cocktail hour or the VIP Art parties. The folks at these events are enjoying the atmosphere and each others company and are not there to drink as many drinks as they can in a certain amount of time. I think the cruise lines hosting a cocktail party is a very nice gesture to set the tone for a lovely evening to be enjoyed by all in a glamourous fashion. However, the behavior of some passengers to consume as much as possible because they are currently free does detract from the ambience and needed to be addressed. I think the cruise lines are starting to rethink the business model and will possibly consider they need to raise the bar of class and not lower it. I believe I read most of the folks were boasting how they supported the ships financial balance sheet becasue of their large consumption of alcohol. well that's what thier bills tell them. They are the ones with the 1,000 bar bill and they think that's the big money. Well many of us enjoy the suite we stay in, the spa treatments, the casino, the chefs table, the VIP breakfast, the ultimate balcony dining, the great excursions, the fine jewelry from Facets and of course the lovely art from Global fine Arts. They have no idea where the real money comes from. Thanks G'Ma you stated most elegantly many rebuttals. I can read and see that you ARE A CLASSY LADY.

maybe you need to change to Holland America with G'ma....

Personally I found the Captain's party to be rather boring, didn't like the drinks offered and never saw the Captain. Way too many people, crowded and definately was a waste of our time, none of us had ever done the Captain's party before. I would much rather pay $7 for a good margarita than have a free drink that I can't even drink.

If they were to do away with it or charge for the drinks would be fine with me.

G'Ma would be really good at that job. She obviously has a superior moral compass and would know the civilized amount of bacon for each and every passenger. ;)

Not at all. However, I recognize a pig when I see one......

I guarentee you that they would miss folks who drink. Folks who can consume more than a couple at the party undoubtedly are running up high bar tabs as well.

Well, we aren't talking about a "couple" are we. We are talking about those who knock back as many as possible...because they are free...that's the only reason they go to the event....... Nobody would miss them for a minute.

Honestly, the only reason I can think of to even attend the Captain's Party is the complimentary cocktails. I also used to enjoy those tasty meatballs that are no longer served. Does that make me a "freeloader"? I never order more than one entree at dinner, so maybe that makes up for my enjoying 5 or 6 cocktails at the captain's party... At any rate, if they eliminate the free drinks, I imagine the captain will be greeting 4 or 5 passengers in an empty lounge. On our last two cruises, the show band wasn't even playing, and with Big Tex gone from the Fantasy, there wasn't even any entertainment from the CD - so really, it WAS all about the free drinks.

Well, now it looks like the free drinks will be gone too.

Why do you suppose they are doing that?

There are plenty of people who will go to the Captain's reception.....they do now...and they DON"T go to get slopped up in 45 minutes.....

Maybe Carnival could hand out lets say 3 or so free coupons for drinks for those who come to the the party. This way people can still get there free drinks and Carnival can maybe save a little money. I'm sure they know the main reason everyone goes is for the drinks. How many of you really do want to meet the Captain? The same with the Past Guest Party.

This is a great idea!

I really don't think you have the moral compass to constatly stand in judgemnt of your peers on charges of "gluttony." Observation is not a "moral" issue. A glutton is simply a glutton and are easily spotted..... Just because you can take 250 cruises, doesn't mean you should. Again, not that it matters....but, my JOB was cruising. I was in the travel industry for 32 years and for 10 of those years I was a cruise host/tour director.....I've spent months at a time on back to back cruises...don't be so quick to jump to conclusions...... Same as the drinks. ;)

The word "hypocrite" supposes that you know the person on whom you've placed the label. So, in this case, it's misplaced. And, what the heck is "ginourmous"......

I think no free drinks is a great idea,

I was shocked to see all the passengers sitting around the bar with only napkins in front of them and they were waiting.

They get ready and sit at the bar and wait for the exact minute and then drink as many as possible just like the OP stated.

I find this to be an awful sight of gluttony.

I see all these folks in tuxedos and gowns and waiting for their free drinks. They sit and wait until it's free.

I had folks complain becasue they see me with a drink an

d then yell to the bartender this guy has a drink and so does his wife. I look at the guy and tell him the bar is open.

I hope this goes fleetwide for the entire industry. It would be nice to restore some class like the good old days,

when folks had a drink becaase they wanted one -not because it was free.

Ooooh the drinkers aren't going to like you! ..even though I agree with you.

Whether the Captain's Cocktail Party has free alcohol or not

is hardly going to make or break my cruise.

You really have to wonder at the extent of covert Drinking Problems

so obvious on any of the alcohol-related Carnival threads.

Are we a nation of chronic boozers, with our heads in the sand? :D

Just wondering if it ever occurred to most people

that the cost of those "free" drinks and appetizers

is already factored in to the overall cost of your cruise

paid for in full before you even board the ship!

You didn't really think that Carnival Corporation is giving you anything free, did you?

Hey, you're the paying customer and you get to pay for everything

-all the advertising on TV, the lights, the air-conditioning, the food, the shows

the accidents and the maintenance upkeep

plus a healthy percentage profit markup for the shareholders on top of all that aforementioned stuff. :D

Adriatic-1121.jpg

NOthing is free. Nothing.

Someone's paying for it, and I have this sneaky feeling it's us.
