Nassau Harbour Dredging - update

We checked out the dredging project this past week to see what the impact will be on the area and were pleasantly surprised.

This new company is not doing traditional dredging, like they did last time where it tore up the entire bed from the mouth to mid harbour.. but they are laying pipe to "suck" the dirt from the bottom and pass it underwater and across the cay to backfill an area on the western side of arawak cay.. over the bridge behind the fish fry.

This will eliminate the months of "unsettled" waters in the harbour.. Of course, there will still be some unstable water for a short time.. but not nearly as bad as first expected.

They are putting in the interlocking pilings on the Cay and laying the pipes at the moment. When that is complete, the dredging will begin.

We're hoping for limited impact on the harbour and it's sea life.

Thanks for the update....sounding like how they do the beach renewal projects that I have seen here in Fl.....it should be up and running when I get there in a couple weeks.....interested to see.

Hi Scubagirl,

Well doesn't sound too bad I guess.....do you think by Aug.22 things will calm down or should we not chance it and book somewhere other than the BCH for the day???Do you think Sheraton Cable Beach is far enough away that it would be safe to spend the day here instead of BCH? Appreciate your feedback....always something to deal with....even on vacation :)

I'd just play it by ear... you will be able to see the dredging when you come into the harbour. If it's in full swing, and the BCH beach is vacant.. which you will also have a good view of, then change your location.

The Sheraton will not be affected by the dredging.

Thanks Scubagirl! I appreciate you getting back to me-we will hope things are "quiet" and we can go to BCH. If not off to the Sheraton. Do you think we would be able to just go to the Sheraton that day and get the day pass? I'm thinking August is a slower time of year so I would think we could get a day pass without any problems. Thanks again, please keep us posted on the conditions.

I doubt you'll have any problem getting a pass during the month of August.. it's usually very slow.

Hi Scuba girl...I appreciate your posts so much. We are going on our first cruise next week, and will be in Nassau Sat. the 25th of July. After reading many posts (many from you :) I finally made up my mind to spend the day on the beach at the British Colonial Hilton....that is until I came across the posts about the dredging....ugh. What do you suggest? Do you think we should go somewhere else? What would your suggestion be? I kind of looked into Breezes a bit, but it would be more expensive as we (I assume) would have to take a taxi??? Any input would be greatly appreciated. Don't want to spend a ton of $ but want a nice day on a clean, safe beach. Thanks in advance!

Check out the hotels on Cable Beach, far enough from the dredging, yet a short cab drive away to very nice beaches, hotels, casinos, etc. We did this on Majesty last May. OR, just go over to Paradise Island.

We are also looking a Breezes. Does anyone know how much a day pass is and are they hard to get? We will be there July 28.

We had 2 days in Nassau last Oct; spent 1st day at Sheraton- we took cab to the crystal palace.. and cut through the casino, the lobby & out to the beach- walked to the left & just ended up at the Sheraton. No one approached us to pay for a pass (we would have paid). We had a very nice day, great chairs, really nice pool area if you want to eat. I did the same thing year prior & a beach guard asked us to pay him- we were put off a bit- but we gave him $20- and he sent us a waitress- tipped her & she kept the drinks coming! I think that was a fluke/ but try your luck/ be friendly!

2nd day in Nassau, we did Breezes/ you can get a coupon out of the Nassau maps/sunny day books when you go through the terminal- be sure to pick one up. I think you get $5/off pp. We took cab & just paid at front desk. It was ok there- not as nice as the all inclusives in Dom Republic- pretty cheesy, but the beach was nice & you could eat/ drink all you wanted. We had hamburgs & conch fritters on their old ice skating rink & some rum drinks. Pool was kinda small, not at all lush like typical tropical resorts- dirty & filled with drunks yelling "woo" nonstop. You get the idea. It just looked run down, but, it was ok for a day. We were hoping to use some kayaks & hobie cats- but they said it was too windy (it wasn't). It was about $60pp?

Honestly we enjoyed the Sheraton more- & it was certainly cheaper. We're trying to figure out what to do in Sept. Looking at Blue Lagoon beach day (only $45./ get a boat ride over & food). We don't like "cabbage beach" vendors there were the worst. Although, you can walk through Atlantis at end of day & see everything.

We will be in Nassua Oct.1, 2009 and we made reservations with www.bahamascruiseexcursions.com for the day pass at BHC for 4 adults and a 5 year old. I called them about the dredging in the harbour and they said they could move us to the paradise island all inclusive excursion. But I have heard that this place isn't so nice or clean, Could you tell us somewhere nice for a family with a small child and Grandparents. I am at a lost. They offered to put our deposit back on the credit card we used but I paid that card off and closed the account. We rather use cash and not get in debt. Can you PLEASE HELP. Thank you so much. We will probably just have to lose our deposit. But we are still hoping we can go to BCH.
