Taxis from Villefranche

We will be docking in Villefranche, and hoping to get to Monaco and Eze.

Are taxis available as we get off the ship, and available in the other towns as

go from place to place? Also, how expensive are they?

Thanks so much.

We took a cab from Villefranche to Monte Carlo during a train strike, which may have boosted the fare - that was a €60 ride. But beautiful....

Was the 60Euros for round trip, and were there several cabs as you got off the ship?

No, one way. And because of the train strike, and the consequent long lines at bus stops, there were few cabs available; we got lucky and flagged one in the upper town. Bear in mind, we tendered into Monte Carlo, took a train to Villefranche (apprently a few trains in the morning were run by managers; we didn't find out about the strike until after we got to Villefranche), and were trying to get back to our ship in Monte Carlo; I am not familiar with the tender dock area in Villefranche.

Incidentally, in another thread on this board, a CCer reports the same €60 cab fare the other way, from Monte Carlo to Villefranche, during a non-strike situation. So we were apparently not exploited, it's just expensive to take a cab there.

As somebody else said, taxis in the south of France are very expensive and it seems like the drivers could care less about getting your business. Last December we happened to stop in Cannes as part of a transatlantic cruise and we tendered into Cannes. We had decided to rent a car and walked from the tender pier through Cannes to get to our rental car location. We noticed that there was not a single taxi at the tender pier area and saw a few cruise ship passengers looking very unhappy. After we walked a few blocks we got into the heart of Cannes and stopped for a cup of coffee at a cafe where there were about 6 taxis parked. The drivers were all chatting and having their coffee. They were not about to let cruise ship passengers spoil their coffee time, which I think reflects the attitude in the south of France (it is one reason we love that region and like to spend vacation time in Provence). I mentioned to one of the drivers that there were some folks looking for a taxi at the tender pier and he just gave me a smile, a nice "Bonjour" and went back to his coffee and chatting. C'est la Vie!
