I was printing out my notes for my upcoming cruise, and found I had nothing for Rhodes. I guess I accidently deleted it! Can anyone give me some good information about RhodesTown? (I found some info about Lindos.) How far away does the ship dock? Transportation? Map of the town? Thanks!

You will dock only about 100 yards from an entrance to Old Town Rhodes, so an easy walk. The major sights include the reconstructed, by Mussolini, Grand Master's Palace, with great mosaics he stole from all around Greece, the Street of the Knights, the Archaelogical Museum and the lovely Jewish synagogue and museum. The mosque is not open to the public.

The town is charming with really lovely shopping.

Enjoy your visit!

Does anyone know where a) the bus stop is in Rhodes Town to take you to Lindos, and b) if there are printed bus schedules anywhere on the internet?

Thanks!

Hi Jstducky! You are on the Ruby with me. Here is the link to the bus schedules: www.ando.gr/eot/eng/BUS_SUMMER.pdf

We decided not to go to Lindos because it's supposed to be over 100 degrees when we are there and by that point in the cruise we will probably be "ruined out". Everything I've read sounds like the medieval town is a full day.

THANK YOU SOOOO MUCH! This is exactly what I needed and what I was looking for.

Lindos just sounds so nice and we're there all day, I guess I just feel like I should go and check it out. And I figure we're in port all day.

These bus schedules defintely help me plan out my day a lot more.

I really appreciate it.

Less than 1 week now until the cruise starts!

Safe travels to Venice.

We were in Rhodes for one port day both last September and last month. Both times we spent the day in Old Town Rhodes, the first time because it was incredibly hot and humid and our trip was ending in Athens, so I did not feel the need spend an hour each way on a local bus to swelter and climb up another Acropolis; the second time because we decided to have a leisurely day between our visits to Delos/Mykonos and Santorini, both of which were very busy port days for us.

We have found that pacing our days on very port-intensive cruises allows us to enjoy all our days much better.

But it is really a matter of personal preference and travel styles.

I am considering renting a car, or taxi hire, to take in Lindos and climb to the acropolis. Can anyone (Fafos?) give me any idea how much time to plan for seeing Lindos, climbing up the acropolis and looking around, then perhaps lunch back down in Lindos.

Any lunch restaurant recommendations?

My wife and I are in mid 60's. The steps up the acropolis look a bit intimidating, but do-able. We will be there mid Sept, so maybe not super hot.

On the way back to Rhodes town, there is a valley with lots of butterflies, but not sure if they are active in Sept, and cannot seem to find any information. Anybody know if the butterflies will be active in Sept?

Thanks for any info.

At Lindos will need over 3-4 hours (if you go to acropolis)...

About butterflies valley... appear every year thousands of colorful butterflies from mid June to late September. The valley is near village Theologos (15 miles from Rhodes town, 35-40 min. by car)

http://maps.google.com/maps?f=d&source=s_d&saddr=Pindarou%2F%CE%A0%CE%B9%CE%BD%CE%B4%CE%AC%CF%81%CE%BF%CF%85&daddr=36.359969,28.055105&hl=en&geocode=FQgVLAId1MauAQ%3B&mra=mi&mrsp=1,0&sz=13&sll=36.37458,28.100796&sspn=0.097856,0.154324&ie=UTF8&ll=36.37458,28.100796&spn=0.195711,0.308647&z=12

But unfortunately their number is increasing due to the reduced impact of tourism on the natural environment. This is mainly due to the fact that a number of visitors hiss or clapping beats to see the butterflies to fly. What we know is that the clapping and whistles produce ultrasonic similar to those of bats. The butterflies feel threatened and try to remove scared. In this way, many died either from shock or exhaustion from the effort to escape or even the impact on trees and rocks. Try So during your visit to avoid annoyance.

You will need much time for visit this area because there are roads and the ground isn't flat..

Yes, but no one will tackle you to make you go into their stores! And certainly nothing like the aggressive Istanbul and Kusadasi vendors.:)

I've been to Rhodes twice, once alone and once with a friend. I'm a 60+ year old woman, and when I was alone I walked to and from and all around town by myself, had a lovely lunch at a little outdoor cafe, wandered down deserted streets, even got a wee bit lost and never felt unsafe. I just loved Rhodes and would like to go back and stay a week and really explore the island.

Thanks Fafos. Just what I needed. For Lindos, now will need to decide taxi, car or bus. As to the butterflies: Based on information from several sources, I will not be a party to the deprecation of the butterfly population of Rhodes. I will leave that to the throngs of tour people bent on destroying an island treasure.

I will spend my day in Lindos, and then Rhodes town.

Thanks one and all.

Thank you to you & other posters-- our worst vendors so far were at Pisa--really aggressive & they were selling stuff made in China (real junk!)

Hope the restaurant we picked is not too crowded...

Fafos,

I am considering going to Lindos by bus. Is it difficult to find your way to the acropolis once you arrive(by bus) and how far of a walk is it?

How many steps up?(if you don't take the donkeys?)

I am still undecided as whether to take the ship's excursion or not(it also includes a tour of old town). I read the taxi alone was 120 euros! Is this correct?

the bus stop is at a square in village entrance... you must go in village and next go to acropolis... I don't know how many steps are there but are many and you must be care on these steps.. a Russian tourist died before 3-4 days on these stairs.. you can use easy the bus (has one every 1-1 1/2 hour)... I think the price for taxi is right (for both ways)...

Hi! We are stopping in Rhodes, and having previously been there and walked around the delightful old town, I would really like to visit Lindos, and ideally, stop at a beach for a little while on the way back. There doesn't appear to be a ship's tour doing this (Equinox-Aug 22). (although I only booked recently, and without my documents yet, can only view the available tours online.) Are there tour companies at the port like many places, that might do something like this? I realize I could take the bus, but we'll have our 10 yr old with us, so I am less apt to "wing it". Thanks!

Hi, I just did Rhodes on my own last week on a cruise. Just as a warning, the bus station from the ship is not easy to find. You definitely need to ask people as you go. But basically, exit the port area and start walking to your right along the shoreline (staying outside of the city wall), keep following the road. At one point in time the road curves in from the shore and you basically take about 3 steps inside the city wall and then back out again. Keep following the road out of the city wall, keeping the water on your righthand side. After about 10 total minutes of walking you come to an intersection with a light. If you look on your left hand side, you'll see a taxi stand. Cross the road here. Keep walking on this road. You'll see a Tourist Information office just beyond the taxi stand. The bus stop is across the street on the opposite corner. Bus tickets and be purchased either on the bus or at the ticket booth at the bus station.

The bus ticket to Lindos from Rhodes town (Rodos) one-way is 4,50 Euros per person. Entrance to the Acropolis is 6,00 Euros per person. Total for a roundtrip bus ticket is 9,00 Euros, entrance fee 6,00 --- total for the day was 15,00 Euros. Much better than the ships tour.

When you arrive by bus, it drops you off at Karnas Square. Ship shore excursion drops you off here too. From the Square (very small), you will see a sign for a free bus to take you down into the village. When you look at the town from this square, you'll see the Acropolis. Believe me, it can't be missed. Wait for the bus and take it down to the village. It's quite the change in elevation. You can walk down if the bus is crowded or taking too long (only one bus does the loop all day long). But I wouldn't recommend walking up.

Once you're down in the village, there will be signs that direct you to the Acropolis. But basically, every single road in the village where you get dropped off leads to the Acropolis.

I had read that in total its 270 steps. But half of those steps you won't notice because you're walking through the village and very very busy tourist shopping area. Once you really start to climb the hill though you'll notice the steps. And there is no railing on the cliff side. Just be forewarned

Also, bring water and a hat. This was our hottest day on the cruise by far. In Rodos the weather was nice and cool and very breezy. In Lindos it was just HOT AND HUMID. Well over 100 degrees. But it was gorgeous and the views were great.

Make sure to leave enough time to get back to Rodos. It took us 1.5 hours to get to Lindos, 1.75 hours to return due to traffic. But we still had about 2 hours to explore the Old Town on our own when we got back and we still made it back on the ship 1 hour before All Aboard time.

This was a great port stop!
