Bare what? (cosmetics)

Hi Cori,

Hope you don't mind if I answer some of your questions since I'm here. :)

I first tried the bareMinerals at a Sephora location in California. I wanted to see them in person to pick the correct color instead of spending money on something through mail order and getting the wrong shade. I don't know about Ulta, but it sounds like a similar concept.

I am 40 and like the way the bareMinerals foundation looks on my skin. There are some subtle differences in the way it sits on your skin from liquid foundation and some might say it makes fine lines a little more prominent. I've also been using Retin A, so I'm hoping mine will just disappear and this won't be an issue! The best part, for me, is that the mineral foundations don't seem to wear off or drift around my skin like the liquid I was using used to do. With the liquid, I'd notice gathering spots in creases where my skin folds by my chin when I smile, etc. I don't see this at all with bareMinerals.

As far as expense goes, it is about the same price as the high-quality liquid foundation I was using. A jar of foundation minerals is $25 retail, but it seems to last longer because you really don't use very much. I made my first purchase at the Sephora location and for $60 received 2 small (I now use for travel) size containers of foundation, a small container of Warmth (kind of a bronzer which I have discovered doesn't really look right on my skin), a small container of Mineral Veil and 3 brushes, including the $28 Kabuki brush, the $22 Flawless Application Face Brush and the $20 Maximum Coverage Concealer Brush. There was also a DVD to watch about how to use the products. I thought this was a very good deal!

Now that I know what I'm needing, I shop online and use a coupon code for a discount.

Thanks so much for all the good information, It certainly seems to be worth looking into. I think I will either try the ULTA store or I know there is a Sephora store at South Coast Plaza Mall , I could check that out as well and see if they have it. If it works for me it is worth the money , I would just like a chance to see in store weather or not it is worth it for me. You are 40 dear , still a spring chicken :) , unfortunately I am on the wrong side of 55 but still like to look nice, so I thought this BE sounded interesting. Thank You again for the info.

Hi Cori,

Yes there are testers for all the Bare Essentials makeup in ULTA for you to test. You can actually have alot of Fun! I believe the price at ULTA is $20.00. I also totally agree with Landlocked about the foundation making fine lines more prominent. This makeup can be for any age so go for it.

Thanks Landlock for the info. about mica in some of the other products. I was not aware. I am way far from being a makeup specialist.

Hi RCCruisin: thanks for the information on ULTA,I know there is a store over at the Cerritos Towne Center, so when I get time I am going to pop over there and check it out. My daughter is a make up nut so I know she will want to come too. :) Thanks everyone for the great tips.

Hey all, just wanted to give some input. I think that the mineral makeups have a couple of flaws. One is that they are matte and can feel heavy on the skin. They also show more than liquids, especially in lines and pores.

They are great for evening as they do give a very good coverage. I believe that even though they are powder they require powder to upkeep them during the day and that can also lead to a heavier look.

Moisurizer must always be put on first (for any skin) and can change the look of these powders. I have tried BE with i.d. on the lid and it does have a shimmer in it. This looks great on the ladies at QVC but can be a bit "alien" in real life. Also, the mineral veil is not needed. You shouldn't need to set a powder with a powder. They can also look very flat on the skin and can look ashy in different lighting.

All in all, okay for light use. I still prefer creams as they are so much more versitile. Also, the kabuki brush will not make that much difference from a semi-soft brush with a layered texture. Also, I do not believe that NM carries La Bella Donna.

I do have good skin for my age (thanks to Philosophy products), and really get a flawless finish using BE. I get a light, fresh look and feel to my skin..... I will never go back to a liquid foundation. I am not a makeup artist, and don't have a lot of skill when it comes to applying makeup. There is a 2 hour Bare Escentuals show tonight on QVC from 9 til 11 Eastern time for anyone who might be interested.

I am 56 with typical 50+ drying skin. I have just discovered Bare Escentuals and I must say I LOVE it! I have never worn any makeup that felt better on my face and lasts all day the way this stuff does. I don't find that it settles in lines and/or pores (unlike my experience with liquid foundations) and the brushes are great. Not only that, but it goes on a lot more quickly (once you get the hang of it) than my previous routine. If you've ever been dissatisfied with your foundation and makeup routine, give this stuff a try.

I've been using the crushed minerals for a couple of weeks now and like the fact that it eliminates one step - that of putting powder on top of my liquid foundation.

But last night I went out with friends and asked thier honest opinion of my face and one of them said that she can now see my pores. My pores aren't that big (and I have very dry skin that I use a lot of moisturizer on), so having them now pronouned is not a good thing. Makes me think about going back to my regular liquid.

Has anyone here noticed this same effect?

THanks,

Jane

Hope you don't mind my asking, but since you posted that you are a make up artist. Would love your input about liquid foundations as well.

As I posted earlier I am on the far side of 55 yrs. And have dry skin, and have spent my life in the Southern California sunshine , so unforturnately have some wrinkles as well ( and I earned every one of them :) too ), I always use a moistureizer first then a liquid foundation. Is there a liquid make up out there for older skin that needs some more coverage, I tried the compact make ups and it just felt so heavy on my skin, I just didn't like it. I prefer a more natural look, with out a lot of heavy make up.

Anyway if you have the time to answer , would appreciate it.

Thanks

Cori

I'd read somewhere (probably here) before I began using bareMinerals that you can use a layer of the Mineral Veil under the foundation layer and that will minimize pores appearance. I usually use my concealer brush and brush on a bit of the mineral veil where my largest pores are (in the T-zone) before applying the foundation layer and notice an immediate difference. However, this un-eliminates that extra step you were happy to get rid of!

I really like Lancome Renergie Lift Foundation for mature skin. But I just purchased Lancome's newest foundation, Absolue Replenishing Cream which I like even better. At $55 it is not cheap, but in my opinion worth it. A couple of years ago when I tried Bare Minerals I used Smashbox Photo Finish before the BE foundation to get a smoother finish. That stuff actually acts like a spackle to fill in small lines and pores. With my Lancome foundation I don't need it. I too will be interested to hear what the makeup artist uses and recommends.

LandLockedin AZ,

Thanks for the tip. Yes, it does add another step, but if the result is better than liquid foundation, I'll give it a try.

I think I'll try to get to a Sephora and see if I can get a sample of the mineral veil and try what you suggested.

Thanks,

Jane

A first coat of Mineral Veil does minimize the appearance of pores. I also "set" the whole thing with MV. It does not look the least bit heavy, in fact, just the opposite. I find that the second coat makes the look last the entire day (even on 12 hour days). Many vendors on e-bay sell sample sizes. You might find it worth trying some. I don't have a great deal of experience with makeup brushes, but the kabuki brush is an amazing little tool that does exactly what they claim it does. I haven't found anything that works quite the same way, but as I said, I don't have tons of experience with makeup brushes.

Another way to diminish your pores before applying bare minerals is to appply a Water Canvas Base (mine is by Vincent Longo). It does wonders but is also a bit expensive. It costs $40.00 for a good sized tube but it should last a long time.

Good Luch

What exactly is Water Canvas Base? With the word "base" in it, it sounds like it's another foundation. No?

I'm not going to wear base foundation under the crushed minerals - that would be wearing two foundations.

I just had to give you my opinion about the mineral makeup. My skin is mostly dry except the area around my mouth (under my nose and my chin) is oily. Putting on the foundation was fine. It looked and felt great. But within an hour of putting it on my face felt tight. Mostly in the area of my mouth. My mom experienced the same thing.

So my opinion on this is if you have dry skin it will work fine, but if you have any part of your skin that is oily, you will not like the feeling of it. I DO have to say I LOVE LOVE LOVE their eyeshadows. They lay on so smoothly and stay put. No creasing and they do not disappear. My mom also uses their blush and she loves the blush. We just stay away from the foundations.

I have only skin in the T Zone, and I do not get the tight feeing. I think it makes my skin less oily. I can't say enough good things about Bare Escentuals. I never could wear liquid foundation because it felt like an itchy mask. I don't get the itchys from BE.

I agree wholeheartedly with Kim. I too only have oily skin in the "T zone". I have no problems with BE unlike other foundations I have used. The minerals control the oiliness in that area unlike any other product I have experienced. I do know that some people have experienced itching or burning with BE but have successfully used other brands. The first BE product I used was eye shadow and I had a problem with it irritating my eyes. I later found that I was using far too much and not brushing/blending it enough for it to "set". Since my technique has improved, I no longer have the problem.

I would not want to be putting a foundation on under my bare minerals either. Sorry if the Water Canvas Base sounded like a foundation - it definately is not a foundation by any means. It is a clear liquid/gel that is very light.

Channel surfing the other day and there was an infomercial by Leeza Gibbons for sheer cover which is also supposed to be a mineral makeup. I almost ordered but didn't because by ordering you are automatically enrolled in the "club" which means you get auto shipped every 60 days I think.
Anyone tried this?

I too have an oily T-zone, and don't have any problems with BE. I did notice however, that my pores tend to show up a little more with BE than with the liquid foundations. To help this, I've been using that new microdermabrasion stuff from L'Oreal called "ReFinish" three times a week, and it's made one heck of a difference. It's only been a couple of weeks, and my skin (aside from a couple of zits which are probably my skin purging bad stuff) looks great!

RCCCruisin,

Thanks for the clarification on the WaterCanvas Base. I'll look for it in the stores. Sephora sells Vincent Longa, don't they?

Do you put in on over moisturuzer?

I have very dry skin and wear a lot of moisturizer, especially in this cold weather!

Thanks,
Jane

Hello again, I have posted before on this thread and have been checking the QVC channel to see if I could catch the Bare Escentuals show, just to see how it is applied , and what all the products are like, etc.before I go to the store and check it out. Just to be well informed, and I just havn't been able to find it. when do they usually have it on ?, and how often.? I am in Southern California, so my time might be different than some of yours, but would appreciate any information you can give me. Thank You.

Cori,
I checked my QVC program guide, there seems to be a BE show on Feb14, at 2am EST. There might be other shows that day also since it is a Day of Beauty, but this is the only time that it is listed solely. Its hard to say how often they will air a BE show, its not on a regular basis. Hope this hepls, Belle
