Pacific princess...too small ot too old?

Thinking about another Med. cruise. Just came off the Ruby...huge and very new. Reading about some itineraries for next summer on the Pacific Princess. Has anyone cruised her recently? What's her history/ How old? Always owned by Princess? Preferred this smaller ship for those that have cruised on the larger ones? Thanks for your input.

The facts:

 

The current Pacific Princess originally sailed for Renaissance Cruises as the R3 and was built in 1999. She was chartered by Princess in 2002 after Renaissance went belly-up. In 2004, she (and the Tahitian Princess) were formally bought by Princess.

I have spent 112 days on the Pacific (2004, 2005 and 2009). She's a nice little ship and good for a change from the big ones. I love the big ships, but some of the exotics can only be done on the small ones.

 

One plus is that you can get from here to there in 2 minutes. One minus is that there's only traditional dining (we prefer personal choice).

I absolutely adore the Pacific Princess as it reminds me of traditional cruising that I grew up on.

Pia is right, the smaller ships can get into more ports that are off the beaten path.

Kathy ... we were on the Tahitian Princess on a 12-day voyage from the South Pacific to Hawaii and absolutely loved it. Princess has several of the Renaissance R-Class ships (as do a few other lines). They're not all that old and very well maintained. Renaissance was a high end line. It's been described by some as being more like a charming British inn than a ship. You can get anywhere onboard really quickly. It's much different than the big ships. Smaller casino and lounges, no anytime dining, not the same level of activities as on the BIG ships ... but still plenty to do. And, you get to know the crew and your fellow passengers on a more intimate level. We've booked the Pacific for next July 2nd.

Thanks everyone and Kent for the great info. Just trying to do some early homework as we prepare to make decisions on next year's cruise. Kent, the pictures I've seen of the ship, indeed show a beautiful ship. By the way....I'll post a few of my pictures on FB. and I'll send you a couple.

I also love the small ships, but if at all possible book a suite on one of the lower decks (6 or 7) 8 is NOT a good choice because of all the pool/cleaning noise in the early morning (2 am) and (6 am) like clock work:eek:. Being on a smaller ship the huge balcony on Caribe deck & all the other perks make this $$ worth every penny.
