Batch5 Posted August 12, 2009 #1 Share Posted August 12, 2009 Taking the Grandeur in a few weeks, any need to know info about the ship; also, any suggestions while in Samana? Thank you Chris
gworkingmom Posted August 12, 2009 #2 Share Posted August 12, 2009 While we were in Samana, we did the self drive Jeep tour. The beach that they take you to is fantastic. The farm was interesting and the waterfall was also cool. My kids thought that it was the highlight of the cruise. Others in our group did the cave and mangrove tour and were not quite as impressed. If you do either of the 4x4 excursions, you will be gone until mid afternoon. They furnish drinks, but no food, other than samples of the fruit. So take a snack with you. The also were native people selling items at the farm and the beach, and some drinks you could buy at the beach (water and soda were furnished), so take some small bills. We enjoyed the ship. It was definitely smaller, which was nice - made it easier to get around, but there is also less to do. I think my kids would have enjoyed a bigger ship more but they loved the cruise and we loved leaving out of Baltimore. -Gerri
starlake Posted August 12, 2009 #3 Share Posted August 12, 2009 I love the Grandeur, we will be on there in November for our 3rd trip. The ship is smaller and older but great. The crew on this ship can't be beat. If you are a beach person, do the Cayo Levatado tour through RC for Samana. It is a beautiful peacefull day. The sand is soft and smooth. Plenty of loungers and trees if you need shade. Take care of the ship for me. :)

I would also recommend the Cayo Levantado Beach tour through RCCL. We've done this tour several times both with RCCL and MSC.
crusintoo Posted August 12, 2009 #5 Share Posted August 12, 2009 Chris, in answer to your question, I live 10 mins. from the port and it's just great for easy departure and return, as for Grandeur she is one of our favorite ships , we've done 5 sailings on her and her staff and crew are one of the best in the fleet. We stopped at Samana Oct. 08 but only walked around the dock area, check out the beach tours we were told they were great....ENJOY!!!....Ed
EaglesRock Posted August 12, 2009 #6 Share Posted August 12, 2009 We've been on the Grandeur three times and she's one of our favorite ships. She's by no means the newest or the largest but has aged very well and has a great crew.
kenevenpar Posted August 12, 2009 #7 Share Posted August 12, 2009 Agreed, best crew we have experienced! A couple of shots from Cayo Levantado: Grandeur in the far background. Ken
angeljt Posted August 12, 2009 #8 Share Posted August 12, 2009 We were on the Grandeur in May and I loved the ship and crew also! Kenevenpar, that beach looks great! Would love to be there right now!
BND Posted August 12, 2009 #9 Share Posted August 12, 2009 We were on Grandeur in July to Bermuda. She rides great, felt almost no motion. The seas were pretty calm, but compared to other ships I've been on, she rode very well. She definitely does show her age, but is well maintained. And, leaving out of Baltimore was great and very easy. It's nice to drive just over an hour from home to cruise.
Batch5 Posted August 12, 2009 Author #10 Share Posted August 12, 2009 Wow, thanks everyone for the great feedback. We loved the Empress of the Seas of the Sea’s and someone told us if you like the Empress that we would really enjoy the Grandeur. Blazesyth Posted August 12, 2009 #11 Share Posted August 12, 2009 I had a question about the Grandeur, I hope the OP doesnt mind me jumping in.... We'll also be on in November; I was wondering does each room have a safe? I've read here that on some ships not every room has a safe. TIA! angeljt Posted August 12, 2009 #12 Share Posted August 12, 2009 There was a safe in the RFS, but I don't know about the other cabins. Sorry, hope someone else knows if they all have them.
MAHA Posted August 12, 2009 #13 Share Posted August 12, 2009 We had a safe in a balcony cabin on Grandeur. We enjoyed th ship and her staff very much in 2006 on a Western Caribbean cruise and are going on the 7 night Bermuda cruise in October. BND Posted August 12, 2009 #14 Share Posted August 12, 2009 Our JS had a safe too. It had a keypad, but the instructions that they had on the door of the cabinet were on how to use the safe with a card with a magenetic strip. I assume they had replaced those with the ones with keypads, but it was kind of funny.

kicker Posted August 12, 2009 #16 Share Posted August 12, 2009 First of all, I loved the Grandeur and didn't feel it was missing anything the larger ships have (except the Flowrider, anyways). We had an OV room. There was no safe - we kept valuables in a locked suitcase under the bed; RCCL also offers safety deposit boxes, I believe. Onboard: Latte-tudes would only give out cakes/pies if you bought a coffee; many of the same pastries were available around the ship (mornings in the Casino; afternnons cookies at the Solarium Cafe) if you looked for them. bermudababe Posted August 12, 2009 #17 Share Posted August 12, 2009 Just got off of the ship 7/25 and had an Ocean View room on deck 3. It did have a safe that used a magnetic card to lock and unlock.
gworkingmom Posted August 12, 2009 #18 Share Posted August 12, 2009 I guess we had a different crew member in Latitudes on our cruise. We had no issues getting whatever we wanted from the pastry display when we didn't buy coffee or ice cream.
starlake Posted August 12, 2009 #19 Share Posted August 12, 2009 We had two ocean view rooms, each of these had a safe. Our friends had an inside an it also had a safe. The Latitudes is hit and miss, sometimes you could get items without a purchase, other times you could not. I guess it just depended on who was working. Grannycb Posted August 12, 2009 #20 Share Posted August 12, 2009 Another vote for Cayo Levantado Beach tour through RCCL. It was beautiful! We've enjoyed multiple cruises on Grandeur all in different cabin categories. There's always been a safe. However, you should know there isn't a refrigerator unless you request it. A small portable model can be fitted under the desk.
Powriv Posted August 12, 2009 #21 Share Posted August 12, 2009 My GF and I are doing the 2 week Baltimore - Tampa Repo cruise Nov 19 and really looking forward to this trip. It will be our first 2 week cruise. Have only done 7 day cruises before and weren't lacking for things to do so I could imagine there will be plenty to do for 14 days other than the entertainment possibly repeating itself over the 14 days
vavasmom Posted August 12, 2009 #22 Share Posted August 12, 2009 We just sailed Grandeur - was she the Freedom of the Seas with all the extra activities - no. Was she a great ship - yes. My 13 yo missed a few of Freedom's Bells and Whistles but enjoyed herself 100%. It was so much easier to find pool chairs on a sea day. With the exception of 1 crew member the Grandeur had a fantastic crew. Would we sail her again - yes! Sailing for Baltimore was so convenient and I thought the port was very well run. We did the Cayo Levantado beach break discussed above - kenevenpar's pictures do a wonderful job of capturing the beauty. We thought it was a better beach day the Labadee (except for the food - they could use a little help there). I thought I had read all the rooms now had safes - we has a Grand Suite that had a the electronic punch pad. I know many rooms have the swipe readers. I was on the same cruise a gworkingmom - We had no trouble getting cookies etc. at Lattitudes. If they say no I would go ask the guest relations desk - they should be included - it sounds like a training issue
Cruz Doggie Gal Posted August 12, 2009 #23 Share Posted August 12, 2009 So do the OV's have any refrigerators? Also, we just went on a R/C cruise on a small ship and we asked that they "nuke" the cookies. A real treat:)
Cruz Doggie Gal Posted August 12, 2009 #24 Share Posted August 12, 2009 Does anyone know if they had room service with hot breakfasts on the Grandeur in an OV? We are taking the one-time Dec 7th 10 night southern caribbean.
dixieva Posted August 13, 2009 #25 Share Posted August 13, 2009 There are fridges in the D1, JS and other Suites. Not sure about the OV but I don't think they have them.
