Honest description of a Carnival cruise

Happy Ks - I think when people describe the Farcus "Vegas" design, they mean the neon seedy part of the strip and not the more elegant hotels.

Carnival is the most popular cruiseline and that is for good reason. The line brought cruising to the masses and they became very profitable for doing that. They are family friendly in that they have very good kids clubs and very good pricing. They have established that very large niche in the market. If a picture is worth a thousand words, the photo I found below on the internet is of the crowded pool area on the Carnival Liberty. This is not for everybody. I enjoyed my Carnival cruises. But I have since decided that being part of something like this is not something I prefer on my vacations. My last sea day on my last Carnival cruise was spent for the most part on my balcony. I couldn't get a lounge chair and just did not want to be part of this type of scene.

Honestly in my opinion, Carnival might be the most popular cruiseline because of one simple reason it is cheap.

Cruising to the masses yes thats right perhaps a majority who are drunk rowdy and party animals..or people who like a bargain cruise and go with the flow....thats what we see thats what we have read thats what we experience.

And some people might think thats fine !!

I like to party but I can go and party with sophisticated people on Hal and Cunard and RCCL and Princess.

Some people like to party on Carnival.

I could have had a great old party on a Carnival Halloween cruise this year and Ive passed it up for HAL.:D

I wonder ....why give Carnival more credit than they really deserve mass market cruising at a cheap price.?

so what !! clever idea yes bit what do you really want out of a cruise ?

Lovely ships yes for sure...

Lovely customers..maybe some.

I think NCL is a very positive similar to Carnival but more upmarket

Lots going on all the time.

Cheers just some thoughts...

and yes I would try Carnival again I met some great people in amongst my dodgy experiences onboard the last one.

You get what you pay for.

I have been on 4 Carnival cruises and loved every one of them!! The staff has always treated us great and the only time I noticed children on board is when a gang of them went running down our hallway banging on doors. Ship security promptly took care of that issue and we did not have any other problems. I highly recommend Carnival, the ships are fun and the prices are great!

Well' date=' don't believe what you hear and read.

I just completed my 66th on Carnival...with 67 coming up soon. My first cruise on them, I was around late 30's. I'm now late 60's and still enjoying the heck out of the cruise experience with Carnival. Good food, beautiful ships, friendly staff, great itineraries and the best prices in the industry.....AND, there is no "nickle and diming" with them.

FYI: Over 32+ years of travel, I have around 250 cruises under my belt and have been on most cruise ships....including many now defunct. Each has it's own atmosphere, it's own fun, it's own clientele. I've never had a bad cruise whether it was RCCL, NCL, Princess, Cunard or whoever.

Most people who yap on and on about Carnival have never stepped foot on one of their ships or haven't cruised on them since the late 70's when they owned 3 tiny little ships and had a "party boat" reputation.[/quote']

Hey G'ma,

Since you seen to be the most experience cruiser I want to pick your brain some more. My husband and I just got back from a 7 night cruise on RC Liberty of the Seas. We got a balcony room for the first time. This was our 3rd RC cruise together. My husband is just one cruise away from the next member status where you get extra upgrades and discounts. We have kinda been working towards that upgraded status. However, after this last cruise (the one that was suppose to be the best) we now have some reservations.

I have never been on a Carnival Ship. He, however, has. He did a Caribbean sail about 5 years ago and hated it. He has expressed that it might be due to the fact that he went during spring break, so there was a massive amount of wild kids and teens on board and that was the main reason for his negative experience. We have also heard from other frequent cruisers that Carnival does not do a very good job at cleaning their ship (a friend of our was greeted on the pool deck one morning by a used condom next to her lounge chair), that their entertainment and shows are very poor and almost embarrassing to watch, and that the service was poor. However, after our last cruise we left feeling a little disappointed and annoyed at the nickel & diming that we experienced on the RC ship.

So what is the real scoop on the cleanliness of the Carnival Ships? Are the rooms attended to multiple times a day? Is there turn-down service at night? What is the average cost of an adult mixed beverage on board? How often do you see a crew cleaning and maintaining the ship? What are the meals like? Are you constantly offered (hounded) to change, upgrade or buy something on ship? Do they have a soda or bottled water package? Are there formal nights? Do they have casinos? Are there designated smoking/non-smoking areas? Do they have a loyalty program? Are there Adult Only areas of the ship?

Any advise you could offer would be very helpful. Thanks a bunch.

Can anyone tell me about your experience on a Carnival cruise. We see some good deals on them in comparison to other lines, but I always heard that they were the "bottom of the barrel" in the cruise pecking order and never considered taking one.

To be honest, kids are cool, but we have visions of hordes of screaming kids all over and a ship with a decor like day care. (flame suit is on)

Hey Corvette Girl. Nice Vette. My husband and I have a yellow corvette also. But, on to your question, we have been on two Carnival Ships. We haven't had any problems with the cruise line. We try to choose the times of year that will be less children. But, we have found that we like RCCL better.

With the kid problems with Carnival, it depends a lot on when you sail. Pick a time that most school systems is still going and it won't be bad at all. We went first part of May and it was fine. We did another Carnival cruise around Christmas Eve and there was definately more kids running around, still nothing bad though. We also did HCL but we personally didn't enjoy it as much because most everyone was in their 60's or older (we are in our 30's). Carnival had a lot better night life and I think they had better food as well. We set sail on NCL next year so that will be our first time with them. We enjoyed both the Carnivals cruises we took.

I have been on four Carnival cruises-I never found the ship nasty-neither have I on the 10 other ships from other lines, found nasty ships.

But, used condoms? that was two sorry passengers-and who knows when it was left there-your friend could have been a few minutes behind the amorous ocuple-how early in the morning was it?

I have read on this board of this happening on RCI also- there is a thread in the floataway where this gal proudly proclaimed she and her new husband (they were on their honeymoon) had had sex all over the Mariner of the seas, all times of the day and night, in areas including the elevators and the helicopter pad.

And even on HAL- people that got up at 6 am for coffee on the lido, ran into a drunk couple going at it in the PUBLIC hot tub on a HAL ship. It seems, I guess, many people heave too much to drink, get amorous, lose their inhibitions, and no longer care if they have privacy.

I don't chink we can blame the cruiseline for this kind of behavior.

Carnival is horrible!!! Stay away, and warn all your friends to stay away. If you forward this message to 10 people, and they forward it to 10 each, and then those forward it to another 10 each, there will be lots of room for the group I am booking on our next Carnival cruise.:D

Seriously, if you love Celebrity or Holland America, you will probably not like Carnival. Myself, I have sailed only on Carnival and Royal Caribbean, and have found RCI's only upside to be their magnificent ships. Check out the ship data in CC reviews, and take not of number of crew vs. number of pax. Carnival actually has a better ratio than RCI, but I feel sure that Celebrity and Holland America have a better crew/passenger ratio than either.

That's just the numbers, though. A lot depends on what you want. What one person views as great service, another may consider harassment. And remember, the more services you get, the longer your cruise evaluation questionnaire will be.

This picture looks like what I encountered on Navigator of the Seas. On Sovereign, I had no problem finding an uncrowded area, and neither have I seen such crowding on the Holiday or Fantasy class ships of Carnival. Just looking at the deck plans, it appears to me that the mega-ships have less open deck space compared to their passenger capacity than do the smaller ships. Is there any source that publishes statistics on deck space / passenger capacity?

The cruise agency I book through lists these statistics about each ship-I can't say who they are-except they advertise here. Maybe you can figure it out.

I also do not like the mega ships. I found the voyager class too congested also- and the pool area looked like that on my cruise also-but our cruise had 3700 people. I am sure if there had only been around 3000 or 3300 (ship considered full at 3300-so our cruise had a lot of people, 4 to a stateroom, which made it over full) it would have been much better.

BTW, I also will not cruise a conquest class ship, nor am I interested in the Carnival Dream or NCL Epic-no megaships for me.

Hi,

My wife and I took our first cruise on Carnival Legend last year and we loved it. The food was good. Crew was friendly and helpful. The cabins were nice and comfortable.

We are taking our second cruise on the Spirit next month and are looking forward to being on a Carnival ship again.

That's my honest opinion! (and I am sticking to it)

We had a great time on Carnival, but also enjoy other cruise lines. For our next cruise, we're looking at RCL cruises, because we like RCL....but Carnival was nice too....had a lot of fun. There are kids on all ships....we don't have kids, and prefer not to be around the screaming ones, but understand a bit of rowdyness...kids will be kids. Carnival did seem to have a bit of a noisier crowd.

Momo,

A couple of comments...you are an excellent writer who obviously has a great understanding of cruises and travel.

Plan to visit Las Vegas because it is above all a very interesting place in terms of a travel experience. Yes, it is over the top but Las Vegas does have a style and charm that is truly one of a kind place. I live about 3 and a half hours from Las Vegas and visit about twice a year, for about three days or so. There is great music to be heard, architecture to look at, some astonishing beauty such as the interior of the Bellagio Hotel, and some of the best people watching you can imagine. And maybe best of all you really do not have to spend much money at all...it is more expensive than in years past but still very reasonable.

As for Carnival, I appreciate the success that Carnival has had and I'm sure, will continue to do well. I have been on two Carnival cruises and though both were fun, I have enjoyed our cruises on Princess, Celebrity RCCL and especially Azamara better. I do want everyone to have a great time because their money is as good as mine. At this stage in my life a vacation is really about travel and not so much about partying.

And...Carnival doesn't seem to be any cheaper than other cruise lines, espcially RCCL.

Take care

Fred-do you mean me? I use the handle Mom of Meg, because my daughter Meg introduced me to this site. I have never been to Vegas, I see nothing wrong with Vegas, I just really have no interest, my husband and daughter have gone twice-so I could have gone-I chose not to go.

Momofeg,

Yes, I meant you. My point is...I thought that I might provide you will a little more incentive to see Las Vegas as it is a very interesting place to visit at least once. And for persons interested in travel there is no question that Las Vegas is a unique travel experience.

I'm constantly reading that Carnival is so much cheaper than RCI and whenever I price a cruise, I just don't find it all that much cheaper. Our Christmas cruise this year is only $90 more per person on Mariner than it would be on Splendour, not enough of a savings for us to cruise Carnival.

When Monarch was still here on the West Coast, we could cruise for much less than what Paradise was going for.

Fred, my thing is I hate flying-I have a bad phobia-yes I have flown to Europe and Alaska, but only because I really wanted to go there, I was still terrified the whole time though, even with meds. Now I have a new problem-I have had a bad ear infection off and on, ever since I returned from France this summer-that I can't seem to shake. I feel it is because we had to circle New York for about 45 minutes before we could land-that huge jet could only go on one or two of the runways-and there were many planes waiting to land who also needed the larger runways-the pressure in my ear was terrible, flying at that low level-so now I have even more reason not to want to fly I guess.

My husband and daughter, if they want to go, I don't mind, I would just rather not.

As I mentioned to you before, we have friends that want us to do a med cruise with them-we know we can't before 2011-as we need to save for this-but as I told my hubby-we are supposed to go to Hawaii in late 2012-early 2013, I told him I would do one or the other- as I do not want to fly any more often than every other year- and I don't care if we do save enough to do both. (which I doubt we can)

Even for a med cruise-this is what I really would like to do-is do a med cruise and then do a repositioning cruise back here-so I won't have 2 long flights- but right now my husband's job won't allow him to do that-he gets 4 weeks vacation a year-but they do not want him to take more than 2 weeks at once.

Welcome to cruise critic!

We were on the Carnival Glory twice last month (Not B2B). Both times we were in an inside cabin. We now usually book an inside cabin especially on Carnival even though we have had outside, balcony and suites with names. Their cabins are bigger than most and we like to save some $$ for tours, etc. I've been told some passengers can hear the engines on the lowest decks - inside and outside cabins.

We have been on the Legend, same floor plan as the Pride, but don't remember the layout well. We had an inside cabin and we like to be close to the main outside deck. The Pride has no cabins on the Lido deck (9), our favorite deck, so we were on deck 8. You will feel more movement of the ship in the very front of the ship and we don't like being a long way from the elevators/stairs.

You may be cool only leaving Baltimore but you can also be warm at that time of year in Baltimore. The next days will be warm and nice for the whole cruise.

CRUISE LINES WE"VE BEEN ON:

Dolphin

Commodore

Regency

Premier

Cape Canaveral Cruises

Carnival

Royal Caribean

NCL

Celebrity

Princess

Costa

Hi Idaho - I thought I would answer your specific questions, since I just got off of a Carnival ship (the Triumph). It was an older crowd, headed to Canada out of NYC, so it was very different than the people who opt for the warm weather cruises that I read about. It was my first-ever cruise, so I'm far from an experienced cruiser, but I am an experienced traveler. Overall, I was not pleased with Carnival, but our friends we traveled with love it and it was their sixth Carnival cruise. So, there are some people who love it, and others who don't. It depends on what you're looking for in a cruise. Our three big dislikes were the quality of the food (about the quality you'd expect at TGIFriday's), the poor dining and bar service on the ship, and the ship's decor (too Vegas-y for us and our ship was 9 or 10 years old, and even with a recent drydock refurbishment, it was still dated and not attractive to us.) As for our age, we are both 41 and we have a toddler son who was 21 months old at the time of our cruise and he was with us.

But with your specific questions, I didn't have a problem with the cleanliness of the ship. The carpet was dirty in many spots, but that's to be expected. I did see the crew around, cutting out dirty carpet spots and replacing them, on two occasions. So they're trying to keep it clean. The rest of the ship was perfectly clean. No problems there. They attended to our room twice a day. In the morning and then in the evening for turndown service. Our five-night cruise had one "elegant" night which is the Carnival version of a formal night with suits, sports jackets or tuxedos suggested. But they won't refuse to seat you if you're dressed in a polo shirt. We saw a few of those in the dining room on elegant night.

Most mixed drinks are between $6 and $7. I think the "drink of the day" in a specialty glass was the $7 drink. Or maybe $7.50. I've already forgot and it was only a few weeks ago we got off the ship. But you can easily see Carnival bar menus on other threads. They're everywhere.

There is a soda package that works out to about $4.50 or $4.95 a day for unlimited soda. You could check on the exact price for the cruise length you're considering. You have to buy it for the length of the cruise. No bottled water package.

No one hounded us to upgrade anything when onboard the ship. Not once.

Our ship had a casino, albeit a small one.

There are non-smoking areas on board, but it seemed that much of the ship was smoking in the bar/club/casino area. At least to the point that you'd smell smoke no matter where you were if you were on that portion of the deck. People also smoked on their balconies, which was pretty icky when the smoke would blow over to our side of the balcony.

The only Adults Only areas were the nightclubs after a certain time at night. And probably the casino, but I'm only guessing there. Just never heard of a casino that lets kids sit down and hang out.

And there is a loyalty program.

Hope this helps somewhat...

While I certainly wouldn't consider Carnival to be the "bottom of the barrell", after two cruises on Carnival, one of those "short" ones and a longer one, I'd not sail on Carnival again.

While people under 21 (kids) weren't really the problem, it was the "atmosphere" of Carnival. Seemed like everyone from 2 to 92 decided that they could disregard all manners, party at all hours, talk loudly, press their way to the front of every line, demand immediate attention to their issues or needs at the expense of everyone else... Combine that with the garish decor, the ridiculous "contests" like 'hairy man" and "belly flopping" and such..

quote]

I have never cruised Carnival, but I probably would if I went with a group and that was the cruiseline the group chose. I have no prejudice against Carnival and I know better than to believe all the talk about anything...the only way I could make an informed decision would be to try it myself.

But something strikes me as really strange - I have hear lots of talk from various sources about Carnival's gaudy decor, the silly contests, the rowdy kids, and the bad manners of many of the party hearty guests. I hear a lot of people saying the same thing, including friends of mine who sailed with Carnival. I suppose it's not all the ships, and not all of the time. But the descriptions always get attached to mainly Carnival and not other lines.

Here's what I find strange: The total opposite descriptions. How can someone like G'Ma sail with Carnival 66 times...wow!...and not see all that bad stuff? Is it pure luck that these repeat Carnival customers are managing to somehow dodge the cruises with the bad stuff going on? Or is it that they don't think it's all that bad - maybe they see it so often that they're jaded to it?

Well the gaudy decor-I think is purely Carnival-I have not seen that on other 6 lines I have cruised-but people behaving badly-I saw that on my 3 day Sovereign of the seas cruise in 2001-now my 4 day on the SOS in 1999 was wonderful. I was amazed how different the atmosphere was on the same ship, between the 2 cruises.

In April 2008, HAL Westerdam did a 3 day before repositioning. I heard the same exact thing about that one lone cruise. I had been on a 6 day right before which had been great. HAL offered these 2 shorter cruises before they went through the Panama canal to reposition to cruise to Alaska for the summer-I guess this was what fit best with their schedule. As I had just come off that ship, of course I noticed the posts about the Westerdam 3 day.

I will not be surprised if we hear the same thing about the Ruby Princess 3 day cruises in December. I do believe, because these are so much less expensive than normal, that they attract a type of cruiser who cannot normally afford to cruise-and so they try to cram 7 days of cruising in to 3 days-you know, have all their "fun" at once.

Which is why I stay away from cruises that are weekend crusies that are very cheap-if you pay less than $200 a person in fare for your weekend cruise, you can expect this.

I did do one more 3 day weekend cruise-on the Carnival Miracle-when she was brand new. But I paid more for that 3 day cruise than I had paid for a 7 day cruise, a few months before. However, it seemed, that cruise had more "seasoned" cruisers, instead of first timers out to party hard.

If the lines offered these on brand new ships more often, I would probably do one again, just to enjoy a new ship-but of course that would not be cheap-and if it was-I would be afraid to book it. The only 3 day I would book is Disney Wonder, as their fares are much more, and so they do not attract this type of cruiser.

Carnival is not my favorite line by a long shot-but I do like their 8 day itineraries out of Fort Lauderdale-and I could put up with a gaudy ship for one of those cruises. I also know-the longer cruises do not attract the "party hard" people-unless it is spring break.

I personally don't think it really matters which cruise line it is, there are rude, obnoxious, loud partying people everywhere! I really think Carnival gets a raw deal on this particular subject. I can only offer my opinion on Carnival and RCCL because those are the only two lines I have cruised on (so far!). IMHO this is a subject that you just can't pin on one cruiseline. I understand that there are probably times of the year where if you want a more relaxing cruise you don't cruise during spring break or maybe 3/4 day weekend trips. Lots of people living it up and a whole lot of kids. Personally speaking, my husband and I along with our kids, parents and friends have done several 4 day cruises and had a blast on all of them. I think a lot of people have the mindset that if anyone is loud or having fun, then they are labeled a troublemaker or all they want to do is party. If it is not in your face, why do you really care? Again, just my opinion. I will add one more thing - I know that for me personally I love cruising so much, that I really don't care about what the decor looks like. If it looks like Vegas then great! Decor is not really a decision breaker for me when I pick a cruise. Flame suit is on!!!:)

No, they are not everywhere. I have never (and I mean never, ever, not even once) been on a cruise with anybody rude or obnoxious, sloppy drunk, or really loud. It's certainly not everywhere.

I think you're probably right. I am sure it's whenever you have spring break crowds and short, inexpensive cruises. It's no doubt got nothing to do with Carnival...other than the fact that they offer some really inexpensive spring break cruises.
