Our wind trip in April has overnight stops in Monaco and Sorrento. Im curious what the policy is for leaving the ship late evening to stroll around. ie are there rules in place "must be back on board by..." Policy?

Im guessing that Monaco may be more relaxed as the ship is berthed, but I believe Sorrento is tendered, so probably are restrictions.

I love doing night time and time lapse photography and would love to take advantage of the stops with a stroll after dinner.

Anyone know what I may be able to do?

Monaco is not a problem at all, come and go as you please.

No knowledge of Sorrento but have had an overnight at St Barts which is also a tender stop. There were tenders until quite late but I can not remember the timings. My vague recollection is that a couple of hours after dinner should be alright for you but not sure about anything after midnight.

OK, at least that sounds promising. Obviously relying on a tender makes things more problematic, but Monaco I suspect it should be fairly ok. Who knows, I might get carried away in the Casino after all my winnings and lose track of time. lol

Les,

If you plan to visit the casino to avoid a potential disappointment, just ensure you have a decent photocopy of your passport alongside your SS card.

Technically the door people at the casinos are supposed to ensure that Monaco citizens do not enter as they are not permitted to gamble. In practice it is a lottery with sometimes you are asked for your passport or your SBM card and other times you are not. I have been in several times and not been asked and once I was asked and refused because I didn't have my passport with me. Also, once on a SeaDream Cruise they wouldn't accept the SD card and obviously I didn't have my passport as the ship had it. I think they sometimes do this when it is busy as a way of numbers control or perhaps in my case they simply didn't like the look of me, which I quite understand. :D

Enjoy your visit,

Jeff

Cheers Jeff, Will make sure we have a passport photocopy, though I'm surprised a photocopy is acceptable as they are easily editable in photoshop.

Did they let you back on the ship ok, or lock you out if you got back late? (It reminds me a bit as a kid of threats of being locked out if I got home late!) Ship curfews!! lol

Cheers Keith. I will be going to the Casino at some point, but its actually not a high priority. I'm more inclined to want to take some night photos if we are allowed off the ship after dinner when its nice and dark.

les since you are berthed in Monaco you can be out as late as you want. Many people dine off the ship. Personally I like dining on the ship and enjoying the views. I do love Monaco though.

For Sorrento I have been there on overnights but not on Silversea. I believe the tender service ran until around Midnight.

Nice place to have something to eat. We've had lunch there a couple of times.

Les,

I'm not promising your photocopy will suffice, it is only good if they want to let you in and alongside your SS ID. If they don't want to admit you even your passport won't suffice.

When I was on SD it was during the GP and in effect the whole of Monaco was on "lock down" and so we were allowed on and off very easilly and in fact some time back I posted some piccies of the GP pits and race track walks taken in moonlight.

Thanks Keith, that is pretty much how I expected and hoped things would be. Its not unreasonable for the tender to stop at midnight in Sorrento, so that's fine, happy to know we can be night birds in Monaco and not locked out! We've booked La Terrazza on both these evenings - and hopefully seated on the veranda. Just nice to go for a night time stroll after dinner really.

OK, no problem and thaks for clarifying the point. And if I'm honest, if they told me I couldn't come in, I'd simply turn around and walk away. I can't suggest "their loss" as I'd not be spending much if anything inside. Its just a tick the been there done that box for me.

They are aware that the Casino is a tourist attraction particularly amongst cruise ship visitors, and the guys on the door do not extend their discernment to SS as against Carnival. They are all simply cruise ships to them.

As it happens, I hate Monaco with a passion compared to most of the other places along the Cote and a night spent in Monaco as against for example a cheap kebab place in Nice old town is a night wasted in my view. But then as we all know I am an uncouth heathen. :D

Monaco is simply a place for tourists to gawp at rich people and rich people to be irritated by the tourists. :)

To be fair, whilst I think Monaco is one on the better ports to stop at (The next trip is Marseilles which I have zero interest of visiting), I am looking forward to it - mostly for the helicopter trip I'm hoping to do.

We were on the Wind last summer with an overnight at Sorrento. I can confirm that the last tender from Sorrento was 11:59 pm.

Thanks Steve. I'm certainly looking forward to this port. ;-)

Les,

If you are doing the helicopter transfer from NCE you need to check how much luggage you can take ......

Jeff

My only luggage will be a camera (and the missus). Ship is arriving from an 1800 Barcelona departure and arriving at 1pm the following day. Its just a scenic chopper ride for 20 mins for 130E - SS are charging $299 for the same trip. Both include the same free transfers

Not meaning to hijack this thread, but what kebab place do you like in Nice? Any other restaurant recommendations there?

Thanks.

Rather than advise where to eat ... it changes .... I'd offer a couple of generalisations.

Beware of most of the places in the flower market particularly those selling seafood. In the last few years there's been a lot of pretty sharp practices including only getting 10 oysters when 12 are ordered double adding service charges and ther over charging etc. In Cours Salaya Les Panchettes is good for breakfast or an evening cocktail. Le Safari also in Cours Saleya has a good fixed price lunch menu and if you have their lamb chops they cook them in their wood fired pizza oven. They also have nice deep fried courgette flowers.

If you head up to the end f the old town it is a little less touristy. As it happens there actually is a decent Greek place in the old town just by the church square.

If it is a leisurely lunch and you don't mind a bus or taxi ride then Le Sloop in St Jean Cap Ferrat is well worth it. A bottle of frozen Ott rose .... and their lunch of the day is great value. There is also a formidable Armagnac collection.

dbbsteve has posted more recent information, but we did an overnight in Sorrento in 2012. Great time, BTW...we used the Circumvesuviana train to visit Herculaneum and Pompeii on our own for about $15 in transport costs. It's also simple to grab a hydrofoil to Capri on your own. Now I want to go back... :(

I looked at my Chronicles from that voyage, and the last tender back to the ship was 2AM. Tender service then resumed the next day at 8AM.

Have a great time!

Do not assume that Oceania will have a docking space in Monaco. We have docked there once and tendered there once so it depends upon which cruise line has the best "parking spot". In either case, when a ship is in port, tenders will be running and there is not a rule that states that you "must be back on board by......." except for the fact that you need to be on board in time for the ship to leave.

If you plan on going to the casino in Monaco, be sure to check out this website that gives opening times and the dress code http://www.casinomontecarlo.com/plan-your-stay/casino-entry/ .

I'd be fine with a 12pm tender. I cant see me out that late and wanting to be up early the next day at Sorrento.

Yes the DIY train job was my plan too. Is the station far? A bus provided or near enough to walk?

My plan for Sorrento, was just to do Pompeii, then back to the ship for lunch and a ferry to Positano. I was going to leave Herculaneum until my second trip in August with the kids. That was the plan anyway - until they piped up wanting Pompeii, so I booked a Naples tout to both sites and Vesuvius (at an incredible 30 Euros each) That said, I have no other takers so my end up cancelling that. So who knows.... I might do both on this trip anyway! lol (Is it always so confusing on what plans to make? lol

What did you do for Livorno, Messina and Civitavecchia?

On the dates we are there, there are two other large ships in port, which would both be too large to dock, so unless they missed anything else, we hopefully will get the dock spot. If we dont, c'est la vie.

Hope you do get the dock spot - it is so much better than tendering. Also, sorry that I said "Oceania" when I meant Silversea:)

Yeh, certainly hoping so. (No worries on the name - I knew what you meant! ) :)
