Derbyshire dolly Posted February 5, 2016 #1 Share Posted February 5, 2016 My husband will be celebrating his birthday whilst we are on our fjord cruise, and I would like to book one of the speciality restaurants for that night, but don't want to clash with the formal night! His birthday falls on a day that we will be in port in Stavanger, the next day is at sea coming home. Do they usually do formal nights on a non port visit day, or does it vary? Aulanis Posted February 5, 2016 #2 Share Posted February 5, 2016 Varies from ship to ship, cruise to cruise so difficult to say. If you say which ship which cruise perhaps someone who has been previously will respond
Derbyshire dolly Posted February 5, 2016 Author #3 Share Posted February 5, 2016 Thanks, should have thought! It's the Aurora, the fjords on 16th May.
john watson Posted February 5, 2016 #4 Share Posted February 5, 2016 (edited) General rules for formal night. Not on the first night. Formal nights are typically scheduled on sea days. Not on last night. Some cruises cannot comply with these guidelines and prove to be an exception. The actual number of formal nights (but not which specific night/s they are) is given on the P&O website for each cruise. Captain can change the formal schedule due to weather, or for any reason he wishes to do so. This is therefore a rough guide. dsrdsrdsr Posted February 5, 2016 #5 Share Posted February 5, 2016 They prefer to do formal nights on non-port days when they can. However, the last night is virtually never a formal night, because people have already packed their formal clothes. Therefore the Captain's Farewell Dinner, if they still call it that, is usually the night before the last night - this would clash with the birthday. On my worldie segment the last night is formal  to make matters worse they list NINE formal nights for a 28 night cruise, with some only 2 days apart. How special is that  I am cruising Sydney to Singapore and the day before is a sea day, with a formal night. I only hope as most people disembarking might well be on the same flight at 8pm they are not going to demand the suitcases before the morning. soobs Posted February 5, 2016 #7 Share Posted February 5, 2016 It's not that much of a problem on a last night it just takes a bit of planning, we did the formal night then went back to the cabin at 11pm changed and packed formal clothes, cases outside the door and off for last few drinks - loads of people did the same and we were not restricted where we could go that last at night. We had a fantastic last night it left a great memory.
Florry Posted February 5, 2016 #8 Share Posted February 5, 2016 Hi I have been on two cruises where the last night was formal, but these have both been short cruises.
Rare P&O SUE Posted February 5, 2016 #9 Share Posted February 5, 2016 On our Norway cruise (Ventura 2013) the last day was a sea day but the last port day we left the port early. Think it was 3pm so we had the formal night that night. Be interesting to know if you leave Stavanger that early.
Mmaazzaa Posted February 7, 2016 #10 Share Posted February 7, 2016 Have done lots of P and O cruises and there has always been a formal night on on the first full day. :)
annieuk Posted February 7, 2016 #11 Share Posted February 7, 2016 The only time we've been on a cruise when the first full day, usually at sea, wasn't a formal night was when the weather was very bad, people were unwell and the Captain postponed the formal night to the following one - so you never know, it's not set in stone. Yes that happened to us too! And, of course, the OP is asking about the second formal night.
Aulanis Posted February 8, 2016 #13 Share Posted February 8, 2016 Hmm no-one eh. This might help otherwise email P@O and ask. The au (? australia??) in the link threw me a bit but the 604 should be your cruise? https://ask.pocruises.com/resources/carnivaluk/life-on-board/au_dresscodes
