Definitely don´t try to swim neither in the Canal nor in the Danube river!!!

The current is tricky and there´s a lot of traffic on this navigable part of the river. Swimming is extremly dangerous when you don´t know the area and the river.

There is a public bath on the "Alte Donau" (Old Danube, a billabong), run by the city of Vienna. It's not in the shipping lanes.

There are probably others in other cities, but not directly in the main part of the river, too dangerous as steamboats has already said.

In Vienna, you can swim in many places on the opposite side of the Donauinsel from the main river.

Just cross the nearest bridge from where you will be moored, and you are on the Donauinsel (a 22km long, 200-300m wide artificial island built in the 60's for flood control purposes, and now a major park).

The stretch of water the other side is calm, with no traffic on most of it, and plenty of swimming places.

I took one of the bikes from the boat and did that on the afternoon of our day in Vienna.

Just be aware that some parts are naturist, and the cycle path goes straight through them - if you see the letters FKK on the path, then you are approaching such an area.
