Laundry on the Jade

Hubby and I are booked on a 21-day Trans-Atlantic cruise on the NCL Jade (Oct. 2016). Last Fall, we did a similar (but only 16 day) TA on the NCL Epic.

We are Platinum cruisers on Carnival which gives us one free laundry bag for every 7 days on a cruise, but we are only Gold with NCL -- and I am not sure what perks, if any, that brings. On our Epic cruise, we were not too concerned about laundry because up until that time, every cruise ship we'd been on that wasn't Carnival, had at least a few passenger-use laundry rooms. We were unpleasantly surprised to find that there were none on the Epic. (There is a humongous casino and a perfume store larger than our entire condo, but apparently no room for a couple of self-help laundry rooms! *L*).

What I am wondering, since we are unfamiliar with the NCL Jade, is whether it has a passenger-use laundry room.

It won't make a difference as to our enjoyment of the cruise; I just want to know up-front if we should expect to use the ship's laundry service at least once, and budget accordingly!

Thanks for the replies!

I thought that it might be the case that laundry rooms were going by the wayside on cruiseships....

That's okay.....My bathing suit is the item worn the most on a cruise, anyway! :)

Travel for 35+ years all over, we always have a small bar of soap for quick wash - in addition to mini-packets of Woolite for DW's, and post 9/11 - those biodegradable laundry sheets are excellent (from Target/Walmart, Amazon & Rick Steves Travel Store)

There's a retractable laundry string in the shower, usually above eye level - although the humidity don't help with fast drying & sometimes, easier to bring & use a plastic hanger from Macy's to hang it near the vents overnight - nothing works better than natural sunlight to dry it with the available balcony.

We did the same thing on our 21 day cruise on the Jade. We only had carry on!! Washed every night. We brought a few plastic hangers like mentioned above and some clothes pins. I also took some wrinkle release spray. The Zote bar of soap (cut it up into little pieces before hand) worked great. We only packed for 7 days and just washed everything. I took alot of mix and match, so it wasn't too noticeable that I was wearing the same thing. Plus, lots of people only took the 10 day cruise, so most the ship was new after that.

Take clothes that dry easy and that are not prone to wrinkle. I tried everything at home first to make sure it would be okay. My husbands socks took 2-3 days to dry. There is a little tie hanger? inside the closet and I would hang the socks there after the first night. Most everything would be dry in the morning, if not it was dry enough to move to the closet so that it was never in the room stewards way, that's why you need the plastic hangers.

Anyway, it was fine and much easier because we traveled before and after on the trains in Europe so it was much easier with just carry on than if we had lots of luggage. We were gone a total of 30 days! Have fun, happy sailing.

We're packing (again) for a 10 week trip, returning on the Jade in late October. Have always had a self service washer somewhere along the trip but maybe not this time so it's be pack for 1 week - wear - rinse - repeat. I carry two inflatable hangers. You blow them up a bit and that way their width holds the wet sides of a shirt apart and it dries faster. To help dry the socks I use the hair drier if needed.

We have been able to do these long complex itineraries a few years now so I have invested in Exofficio brand underwear which feels luxurious and dries overnight so 3-4 sets is plenty - one to wear, one to wash and one just in case. Wish they made socks.

I take my shower in the evening, do the shower-stomp with a few clothes, squeeze them out in towels and hang them to dry overnight. The routine gets pretty easy as long as you keep up with it every night, a few things at a time. m--
