Disembarking Off NCL Jade

I know there is no advertised self-disembarking option in Venice, but I was wondering if this applied to all baggage or just larger suitcases. Can you walk off without a designated time if you only have carry-on size bags? Thanks!

Yes, you can walk off at any time with your carry-ons. For that matter, you can walk off with full size luggage. Self-disembarkation is discouraged in Venice, for good reasons, and in the past they have gone as far as suggesting (falsely, as far as I can tell) that the port authority prohibits it. But there's not much they can do to enforce this. If you fail to put your luggage out the night before, they won't stop you from taking it off the ship the next morning.

Definition: Bad advice. It is always bad advice to encourage anyone to deliberately violate cruise line and local port authority rules. And if they get stopped, tell them that Hawkeyetise said that it was was their right to violate the rules.

Good advice: let the porters take your luggage ashore.

Kind of like encouraging people to ignore the check-in time on their e-docs and to show up by 11am no matter what?

Walking off with your luggage is discouraged in Venice, and there are good reasons for that. I already said that in my previous message, so that is the opposite of encouraging people to walk off with their luggage. But the fact is that people still do it, and neither the cruise line nor the port authority stops them. That may be useful information for some passengers, but it doesn't give any one any "rights", and each person remains responsible for the consequences of their own actions.

To get back to the OP's issue: They only have carry-ons. So they will have no luggage color, and if the "rule" is that you can only disembark the ship when your color is called, where does that leave them?

Thanks for the opinion everyone. I have read differing views on other posts where some people have, some haven't seen any, hence the reason I asked. As hawkeye mentioned, it seems highly discouraged and obviously everybody should always be ready to accept the consequences/rewards of their actions.

Beverley - Thanks for the info. I didn't ask you in your review whether you saw people just walk off based on when your family got off the ship.

We were on the Jade out of Venice last year and hawkeye is absolutely correct; they won't stop you if you choose to disembark with all your baggage. You WILL stick out like the proverbial sore thumb, however, and I don't think anyone from NCL will assist you if you run into any difficulties.

Unlike NYC & other cruise ports we've sailed on NCL out of Venice just doesn't seem to be set up for priority disembarkation. We talked to the CD the night before we disembarked & he echoed my observation; most of the European ports that NCL sails out of just aren't set up for priority disembarkation so NCL doesn't offer it on their European cruises.

To answer pterp; if all you have are carry-on baggage then just pick up the appropriately colored luggage tags to be amongst first people off the boat, attach them to your carry-ons and then just walk off with the bags at the appropriate time. Since you'll have the correct tags no one should question you.

Have a great cruise!

It's an interesting question though. I'm doing it as a back to back, and assume I'll be allowed off with just my rucksack on the turnaround day without the full fuss of disembarking.

I have never done a B2B, but I remember reading on here that you should be able to inform your first room steward that you will be on the next leg in whatever stateroom. I would think it would be easier for them to just transfer your bags from room to room.

Good advice, but the point is moot. Nobody else will have the colored tags with them when disembarking the ship either (the colored tags are attached to the luggage already in terminal in the morning), so for somebody traveling only with carry-ons, getting the tags is completely unnecessary.

When you only have carry-ons, don't bother getting any tags (that's less tags openly available for those that actually need them) and just leave the ship when ever you feel like it after they have started calling the colors.

In Venice there isn't "full fuss of disembarking", you just walk through the walkway to the terminal and straight out. It's very different from disembarking in US for example.

Just make sure that you have keycard that reflects your final disembarkation date when you exit so that you can return to the ship easier (without check-in process that is).

You should get letter of instructions to your cabin on the first leg, but if you don't, visit guest services before final evening on that first leg to have them give you instructions on how to proceed with the B2B.

we had a turnaround day in Venice and it was very easy to get off with just our backpacks on that morning.

a few nights prior to that day, you will get a letter from guest services outlining the procedure.

just note if your keycard has your final disembarkation date (as mentioned by Demonyte in post # 11).

coming back on to the ship is just as easy......treat it as another port day on the cruise.

Hiya I was just off the Jade in Venice a week ago. I have kept my 'freestyle daily' from disembarkation day and it says: "Due to local Customs regulations and safety issues, Easy Walk off is not permitted in Port of Venice". Hope this helps.

We embarked with all of our luggage (except for the really large case) - despite protestations that my medium case wouldn't fit through the x-ray scanner (it did, with no problems).

On disembarkation we just took everything with us. Nobody batted an eye.

Yes, there were notes advising to place luggage in hallway.... but there always are, and we never do.

Venice was no different. We were among the first off the ship, walked over to the People_mover, and had our luggage in storage at the train station by 9 a.m.

We disembarked on August 13th, if it helps.

This is good to know since we will be on the Jade in early October and have an 11:30 flight to catch. I know you didn't necessarily head to airport, but do we need to get on the people mover to reach the plaza where the taxis are? We are trying to logistically plan the fastest way to get to the airport once the ship ports. Did you end up grabbing luggage tags since you just had carryons or just disembarked whenever the first color was called?

The luggage tags are for the luggage you leave in the hallway the night before for delivery in the terminal. If you are not planning to use this service, you have no use for luggage tags.

On disembarkation morning, no one on the ship wants to see your tags (since your tags are not on you, they're on your luggage) and you don't need to show any "proof" of your color. Disembark whenever you want.

a day or so before your disembarkation day, you will be notified about picking up the coloured luggage tags (where, what colour for what time etc)

on the appointed day, in the afternoon, we went to collect the correct colour for our preferred departure time.....eek!! there were none left!!

(we'd been spoilt by other cruise lines that leave said tags in your stateroom)

thank goodness for the kind hearted guest services person who found some for us (another silly guest!! he probably and rightly thought)

tip....if a particular time (ie early) is important to you, pick those tags up early on the nominated day

We came off the Jade in Venice on Saturday. No one we saw was doing a walk off. We had a flight at 1130 and went and got Green 1 tags which would have allowed us off the ship about 0830, Yellow tags go first as they are priority.

there was a slight delay with clearance and we were told to leave just after 0830 - down to baggae hall and out for taxi with no real problems.

When the tags come out just make sure you have Yellow or Green tags and locate yourself near the exit.

We didn't have tags - we were in a suite, so we were escorted off by the concierge.

The beautiful thing about the walk-off is that few people were doing it, so it was very easy.

The people-mover is the cheapest & fastest way to get to Piazzale Roma - but if I recall, there are taxis AT the port too, so if you're only going to the Piazza to get a taxi, I'd skip a step...

Stephen, did you take the People Mover? If yes, how far of a walk was it from the ship to the People Mover?

You may want to look into pre-arranging a taxi to pick you up directly from the port (outside the ship I think), and take you to VCE. You will save time, and I would think the price won't be too different (people have reported around 50 euro for the fare).

I did. It's maybe 1/4 mile....by the time you walk along the buildings & through the port exit.....it's easily doable, paved the whole way.

Super easy to get there. In our case we also took the People Mover TO the port, and I bought 4 tickets (2 there, 2 return) at one time so I already had the tickets ready for the return.

Thanks for the advice! Do you know how you can prearrange a taxi that will actually be there for you when you disembark?

I'm not Stephen hehe but I took the people mover and it was about a 5-10minute walk depending on where your ship is docked. It was an easy walk from our ship at terminal 117 and there were lots of signs and people to guide us there. :)
