  1. For up coming cruise my hubby will leave his tux at home. He does not plan on taking a sport jacket either. I on the other hand have a few casual dresses I plan to take but they are by no mean dressy or at least I don't think so. Others might feel they are. Vacation for us is all about relaxing. We play dress up enough at home.

    As always happy cruising.

  2. Sorry, Charlie! Shorts & T shirt for dinner on a cruise ship says SLOB! We're not talking snob here, we're talking at least dressing somewhat properly as one would at a decent restaurant.

The informal definition of slob: a person who is lazy and has low standards of cleanliness. Please tell me are you that familiar with people on a cruise ship that you can make this claim about them. Shorts and tee shirt does not mean that a person is lazy and/or unclean.

Narrow minded, snob, living in a bubble, refusing to change with the times, would rather X out those that do not think like them, viewing the world through rose color glasses. Sound like someone you might know. I learned a long time ago not to throw stones if you live a glass house. Don't point a finger as you always have three pointing right back at you.

Come on, a total stranger wearing shorts and a tee in the MDR can't have that big of an effect on another stranger's vacation. If it does then I venture to say that person came on board with some serious issues/problems and that someone wearing shorts and tee shirts are the least of their problems. Is there a Doctor in the house!

As always happy cruise and get a life. Some of you people obvious don't have one.

  3. Super meal? Carefully prepared? You are dreaming. It is not made to order in the MDR. No, what they serve on Celebrity in the dining room is banquet style food that is usually good, mass produced in the galley. I do think the main dining rooms on Celebrity are lovely. They remain lovely however the humans are dressed.

Charles....I agree with you. But I can't help but wonder are there actually any peolple on this thread who honestly believe that the food in the MDR is prepared to order. Surely thier common sense would tell you that is an impossible feat.

Are is it true what they say...common sense is not common for some people.

    As always happy cruising.

  4. We had a horrid experience last Deccember trying to get through the Barcelona airport following our cruise. The airport staff was over whelmed as there was two ships descending on the airport.

When we arrived at the airport, there were people who had be standing in the only open line for close to an hour. I just you get off the ship as early as possible and sprint to the airport.

    Good luck!

  5. I promised myself I would not comment again on the topic of "to dress up or not to dress up" for the MDR and on formal/chic night but I needed to share this. I have several swimwear cover up outfits but one in particular consist of a pair pants with a little sparkle in the material and a very colorful top. Never the less it is swimwear cover up. One late afternoon I changed into this outfit with a swin suit under it of course and headed to the spa. Along the way I was stop by serveral ladies both young and seasoned who loved my outfit of choice for formal/dress up night. One even commented on how early I was dressed for dinner and checked her watch.

In the eyes of each of these ladies I was dressed to the nines for dinner. Not, I was dressed for a relaxing late afternoon at the spa. And yes, on another cruise wore this coverup outfit with swimsuit underneath to the MDR just to see if I could get in and yes I got in and received compliments on my WONDERFUL sense of style (lol).

Again who determines if someone is dressed up or appropriately dressed? Hopefully not any of these ladies or we will be in swimwear. I say wear what makes you feel comfortable, pretty, handsome, happy, and/or relaxed. It's your vacation not mine.

Now if anyone would care to write me a check or hand over a credit card for my upcoming cruises, I will gladly pull out the formal/after five wear and dress to the nines and dress your way. Until then it's all about me.

As always, happy cruising to all.

  6. You know, it really wasn't very long ago that dress codes were enforced without question and everyone looked great. Most people felt it was part of the cruise experience to dress up and look good. Food was better, service was better, activities were better, entertainment was better in fact the whole product was better and everyone, regardless of his cabin category felt they were having a quality experience. If anyone doesn't get the correlation of the "I don't care what anyone does" just give me a drink package mentality to many of these changes they are just kidding themselves. If the passengers don't care, why should the cruise line?

Don't get me wrong, I'm not mourning the death of cruising but I'm not blind to the changes either. I'm fortunate to be a very frequent Celebrity cruiser and am always treated wonderfully so I suppose I really shouldn't care about the situation for others. There are also many changes that have been improvements and for quite a few years many of the old ways weren't really missed because there were new and different things to appreciate.

I know Celebrity isn't the only cruise line cutting quality recently and it's just the way it is. The suite life is a big improvement, but honestly, the experience for the average cruiser just isn't particularly special any more and can probably be had for less on some of the other cruise lines. I'm just glad we were around during the really good times.

It seems that the Celebrity doesn't really care to be a cut above any more and aren't really that interested in differentiating themselves from any other mass market cruise line.

Again, I ask who determines what looks greats and who does not. Just because a person does not fit into a cookie cutter mold of dressing for dinner does not mean he or she is not well dressed. I too was around during the good old days of cruising. My husband wore his tuxes, suits, and dinner jackets. I wore my evening gowns and cocktail dresses. I am not sure if others felt we were well dressed but we certainly did. Again this is a vacation not a fashion show or a runway. I for one am glad there has been changes. If I feel like dressing for dinner (long gown and all) I do. When I don't, I don't. When I don't I do not feel out of place not one bit because I am confident in who I am and know that clothes does not make the person.

As far as the "give me the drink package mentality, my husband nor I drink or smoke. We just choose not to tell others how to dress for dinner.

I welcome and embrace the changes and the cruise industries are making. Due to these changes more and more people are cruising. More people who tried it in the past and because of the elitist attitudes of many on board did not return are now coming back to cruising.

As I said earlier I have seen far worst sights at the pool. Someone in jeans and a tee at dinner with a friendly attitude and wonderful smile is a welcome sight anytime, anywhere.

    Happy cruising to all :D

  7. Some of us like go on vacation with well dressed fellow pax. If we did not, then we'd all go to Applebee's in our shorts & flip flops & watch the fights at the bar!

Now I think my question is what is "well dressed" and who is going to determined if a person is well dressed or not. I have been on many cruises where people thought they were well dress but in the eyes of others may not have been. Now what? Are they reported to reported to the fashion police and them banished to their cabin until they wear something that you, Celebrity or myself say puts them in the category well dressed.

I personally attend enough functions where evening gowns and after fives are required. I attend monthly meetings where business dress is required. I don't need a vacation to play dress up.

If dressing up is what a person needs then play dress up at home. Happy cruising.

Oh yes: What about the horrible sights we see around the pool. May we please start a petition to band ill fitting swim suits and over exposed/unsightly bodies. I would rather see a pair of jeans in the dining room any day then to be subjected to the unsightly mess around the pool. Which by the way is one of the reason I don't visit the pool area often.

"Some of us would like to go to the pool without being subjected to sure horrible sights."

  8. Just off the Summit August 7th cruise and saw 4 men in tuxes at the evening show on elegant chic night, 10 men in suits, about 15 percent of the men in sports jackets (most without ties) and 5 men in jeans. During the last evening in Blu, a 30 something couple were seated wearing shorts. Her shorts were really short shorts while his were knee length. They were both wearing t-shirts. They really looked out of place. I enjoyed the elegant chic dress code and would like to see it enforced.

I bet they were happy and comfortable.

  9. I have been cruising for a while and never have I heard so much back and forth on what to wear (tux no tux...button down no buttons...evening gown or cocktail dress, jacket or no jacket) as I have on cruise critic. This is my belief...

I am on VACATION...REST...RELAXATION...HAVE FUN. Which by the way I paid for with MY hard earned money. I am not on a runway, doing a photo shoot or trying to impress others with what I wear. My clothes are clean and age appropriate for me. Nothing too short, nothing revealing, nothing exposing. If someone wants to wear jeans to dinner, why shouldn't they. If a gentlemen does not want to wear a tux or tie on formal night, why should he. I for one am glad cruising has taking a turn. This is not the days of old. When cruising was for the elite and rich.

My husband and I are not ones to wear jeans, tank tops, or short to dinner. We wore the dress up clothes way back when. However, time have changed. I don't insist that others dress the way I do. This is their vacation and they should dress how they want to as long as it is appropriate and fits the dress code the cruise line as set forth.

I have seen far worst (and I mean far worst) and totally inappropriate at the pool on cruise ships. Maybe that is where there should be a dress code and where concerns should be directed. I suggest some cruisers concentrate on having a wonderful vacation and less on what they are going to wear. Just my two cents.

    Happy cruising :)
