  1. To be honest, I'd wait for reports of Thanksgiving Dinner in the MDR and specialty restaurants b/c I've read that all restaurants will offer the Special dinner and the question is "why pay additional for something all restaurants are offering,"... just saying... (pretty sure it'll be very similar to thanksgiving).

However, if you're not into the turkey dinner then sure.... love Cagney's, definitely already on our list of places of eat.... again...and again...we ate there twice on our 1st cruise.

I highly doubt even if there is a "special meal" in the MDR that it will be "something all the restaurants are offering". That goes against the whole idea of the speciality restaurants.

  2. This is my first NCL cruise and will be on the Epic during Xmas.

Do they do a special dinner in the MDR for Xmas or should I consider a speciality restaurant to celebrate it? Also if I am travelling with another party, how do I pay for them to come with us to that restaurant...any suggestions.

    Thanks!

Can't answer the MDR question...but I do know that you can prebook - and pay for - a specialty restaurant reservation for up to 6 people prior to boarding. ;)

  3. MDR Entrée - Salmon or Fried Cod

MDR Dessert - Tira Misu Cake

SR Appetizer - Le Bistro Cream of Mushroom soup, almost as good as my mamas

SR Main dish - Lobster at Tepenyaki - cooked in butter no soy sauce. So yummy.

SR Dessert - Le Bistro - Vanilla Crème Brulee

Other - Pretzel rolls, chocolate croissants

I eat breakfast and lunch in the Suite venue and my faves are: Eggs benedict, crab benedict for breakfast and I loved the salad with hears of palm at lunch. I had it almost every day! I also enjoyed the kosher chicken.

Also, great memories and great food at Chef's Table and Moderno.

    The Haven restaurants are fantastic!!

Funny that you should mention the breakfast there - on the Breakaway one morning DH was having trouble deciding between the eggs benedict and the steak and eggs. The server said he'd bring the eggs benedict with the steak.

THAT would now be DH's favorite meal in the Haven restaurant! ;) :D

  4. For those who have read this far and don't know whats going on...

Norwegian Cruise Line announced today that a brand new Ice Cream Bar concept debuted on board the line’s newest ship, Norwegian Breakaway and will also be available on Norwegian Getaway upon her arrival to Miami in February 2014.

Guests sailing on board Norwegian Breakaway’s seven-day Bermuda or Bahamas and Florida cruises from New York City or on Norwegian Getaway’s seven-day Eastern Caribbean sailings from Miami, can indulge in a variety of specialty sundaes, floats, shakes and other ice cream treats during their cruise.

Located inside O’Sheehan’s, the ships’ 24-hour neighborhood bars, Norwegian Breakaway and Getaway’s Ice Cream Bars serve up the most delectable classic ice cream parlor creations, from floats, milkshakes and malted shakes, to egg creams and a variety of spectacular ice cream sundaes.

The signature item on the Ice Cream Bar menu is the enormously delicious Breakaway or Getaway Sundae. This massive ice cream creation serves from three to four guests, includes a whopping nine scoops of ice cream in up to three different flavors and is topped with “everything but the kitchen sink,” from chocolate fudge, butterscotch and raspberry sauces to chocolate shavings, sprinkles, crumbled Oreos, sliced almonds, marshmallows, gummy bears, whipped cream and cherries.

“We’ve recreated a classic ice cream parlor on Norwegian Breakaway adding yet another exciting innovation to our newest ship,” said Kevin Sheehan, Norwegian Cruise Line’s chief executive officer. “The launch of the Ice Cream Bar on board has been extremely well received and we look forward to debuting it on Norwegian Getaway in February 2014. Our guests are delighted by the variety of ice cream creations – especially the runaway fan favorite, the Breakaway Sundae.”

The over-the-top menu also features an assortment of mouth-watering ice cream sundae creations, including classic Hot Fudge Sundaes, Hot Caramel Sundaes and Banana Splits. The menu also features other sundae favorites such as classic Peach Melba, with peaches, vanilla ice cream, raspberry sauce and whipped cream; and Pear William, made with pears, vanilla ice cream, chocolate sauce and whipped cream.

YUM!! Something else to look forward to on the Getaway ;) :D

  5. People don't take formal nights too seriously on Carnival. Khakis and a polos are fine in the dining rooms on formal night. Some people are still seated wearing t-shirts and jeans. Carnival themselves seem pretty relaxed about it as well.

I don't really have any input for the kids stuff, but if they're younger, I always see good reviews or mentioning of Camp Carnival. The kids club rooms look pretty decent on ships that I've seen.

True - they don't even refer to them as "formal" any more.

Elegant nights - as they have become - are really similar to the "dress up if you want" nights on NCL. Shorts and t-shirts are not supposed to be in the dining room but long pants and polos or collared shirts are just fine. Rarely do I see anything dressier that a sports jacket - pretty much gone are the suits with ties and I can't remember the last time I saw a tux!

  6. Dinning does take forever on Ncl im normally in and out in 45 minutes average.. CCL takes close to 1.5 hours plus you sit a big table with whoever they put at your table.. inless you do anytime dinning..

He's already stated that they have chosen ATD.

OP.....I think the ATD option will be a good one coming from NCL. I also agree with you that will likely find more things similar than different.

Entertainment may be something that you see as "different". I've only cruised the NCL's Epic and Breakaway - so I can't compare the Sky for you. But Carnival's production shows may be something you find different.

  7. Did you try the French Toast covered in cereal? Was it good? Sounds strange......

I have...did the Frosted Flake one - on the Breeze. I enjoyed it. It was interesting and fun - for something different. Not much difference in the tase - but the texture was really crunchy!

I'd do it again....maybe with the Cherrios next time ;)

  8. Why are there still comments about Capt Morgan being removed when it has been explained and found NOT to be true. Only a rumour. Even John Herald had in his blog and in facebook about these things getting out of control with talk that is baseless. He then reiterated how it is not going anywhere and has had no plans to go any where.

Because reality - on more than one occasion - is that JH has been wrong!

  9. Don't know the reason either. That being said, the aft wrap Vista suites on the 4th floor are by far the best. Great room(s) (as in two, sitting room and bedroom) and the best balcony in the fleet (and we have stayed in every type of balcony room Carnival has other than obstructed.

Yes!! Our favorite cabins - BY FAR ;)

  10. I recently used a lot of them on the Carnival Splendor, I brought them with me went down to the pursers desk and turned them in, they said I had to wait overnight for them to process them and the next morning I saw the OBC on my account.

    Exactly!!!

OP - no problem! Take it to Guest Services once your board and the lines die down. They will apply it to your account.

It is not an "instant credit" - and you may have to leave it so that they can be applied because not everyone at Guest Services has the ability to process them - but it will show OBC once processed. ;)

  11. We're going to be on board Freedom for Christmas with Xmas day in Grand Cayman.

What can we expect to eat? Will it be a formal dinner? Will there be parties, entertainment, decorations, etc? All info good. Never done a Christmas cruise or Carnival cruise before.

Haven't done Christmas on a ship - but did Thanksgiving on the Splendor. TONS of families so the feel in the MDR was different.

They made Elegant night Thanksgiving - nothing unusual on the menu but it was still a lovely evening.

I'm sure the ship will be beautifully decorated - and I've heard that on Christmas Eve they do a "Night Before Christmas" reading for the kiddos! ;)

  12. Hey Y'all

Does anyone know when the chef's table generally is? We have two kids and would have to have them in camp carnival, but I don't want to go past ten cause then we have to pay for BBSitting.

Also, if we don't drink, will we still have fun? Is it still worth it?

Tough to answer. It really does vary by ship and itinerary. Which ship are you sailing?? Maybe someone will have some first hand knowledge to share??

  13. I don't know that all Taste Bars also serve breakfast. I thought only on Dream and Sunshine class, but no reason they couldn't?

Agreed! I know the breakfast at Taste is available on the Dream, Magic, Breeze and Sunshine. Not sure about the other ships :o.

Will have to look on the Miracle in February. It would be a nice quiet alternative to the Lido on Sea Days - if it's available. ;)

  14. Thanks for all the input, everyone. Both passengers are in their 30's. Not sure if one has a warrant out, but I have let my friend know that one or both of the girls just needs to call Carnival and find out what's going on. One girl in the cabin has something very against Carnival, so maybe there is more to the story than I know.

    Sure sounds like it!
