My sister-in-law said that her husband was sent back to their room to change after wearing shorts on a formal night a few years back. He is pretty casual normally. I've worn a tie for formal nights on my first two cruises. This time I'll have t-shirts, shorts, jeans, and tennis shoes (and bathing suit). Probably ditch formal nights but we could test the limit with jeans and t-shirt/tennis shoes. But I don't want to bug anyone by dressing informally so we may do buffet/pizza/hamburger options.

What you describes happened a long time ago from what I've seen in the last 2 years. Things have changed in many way since then.

Still it's a shame that you'll be depriving yourself of a decent meal substituting a hamburger & fries in it's place for the lack of wearing a pair of slacks & polo shirt.

Priority tendering is still one of the Elite benefits that offers real value!

Right now it is, but not if they decide include priority tendering into their Plus or Premier package.

At that point it's true value will decline somewhat as 70 % of the ship seems to be buying into one of them.

  3. I was a little set back when I noticed how many blue bags I've seen in the stewards trash a few days after they were handed out. Some people just didn't want them as a gift for the length of the trip.

We try to schedule our MDR reservations for 6 to 6:30 now, but there was a time when we were traveling as a family with kids that we regularly headed to the MDR between 5 to 5:30. It left us free to enjoy evening fun on the ship and for them to have time in the clubs if they wanted to participate in any of the planned activities. So definitely not just a senior thing. More just a personal preference I think.

Choosing a dining time has more to do with what activities you want to do that particular night rather than what you do at home. It's impossible to schedule the main show plus a trivia game and them listen to some music in one of the lounges if you begin the night with dinner at 7 PM.

I’ve seen shorts ignored many more times than I’ve seen people turned away but I felt very sorry for one man who hadn’t packed pants for a cruise. It’s always good to be prepared.

I can't say I've seen any person turned away for any dress offence by as you mentioned, it's hard to believe anyone would leave on a vacation without at least 1 pair of pants in their suitcase. 😆

  6. It's whatever you want it to be.

A Tux, jacket & tie, short sleeve shirt & Dockers or jeans and some even intrepid it a shorts.

Princess has given up any enforcement of a dress code & leaves it up to the individual's discretion.

The important thing is not to be upset if someone doesn't follow what you perceive as proper and just enjoy yourself.

Oh my goodness, you eat dinner at 5:00 pm?  I don’t even know what that would look like!  Is this a Florida senior thing?  I’ve heard about the early bird specials  that folks line up for.  I guess it applies to cruiseships, too.  Well, to each their own.  Does the MDR start serving dinner at 5:00?

That's a little late for us, but we make do.

You would be surprised how many people are in line at that time.

I never even thought about them charging for them.  Perhaps they will go out to those that purchase a package 😉

Now that wouldn't surprise me at all. 😉

Not in our experience on the Sapphire recently. We dined at 5:30 every night and it was very slow several evenings. We barely made it to the 7:30 shows.  Some dinners moved along and we were done by 6:45 or so. But others dragged between courses and it took almost two hours. We had a table for two, not sharing. And we generally order the same number of courses every night, so it wasn’t that either.

Of course, it could be slow on any ship where the crew/cook staff is inexperienced. On the Enchanted we arrived at 5 PM and were always finished by 6:30 PM. We each order 2 appetizers every night, soup, salad, 1 main course & dessert with coffee- table for 2.

My husband was usually one of the first to arrive in the show lounge to save our favorite seats.

I just read that they might be coming back.  They will look a little different than the bright blue bags of the past.  It may just be rumor but even saw a photo of someone on the Sky Princess and they mentioned that they were to be giving them out fleet wide.
    Time will tell.

At what price? I'm sure it won't be free. 😉

We still had a wonderful vacation, but were disappointed that the dining venues we love were so frustratingly slow!! All the food we had on the cruise in all venues was very good otherwise.

Anyone else experience this sort of thing?

You obviously chose a later dining time which is always much slower, that is unless you arrive just before closing time at 9 PM.

Next time try to arrive a little earlier and you'll notice a big difference.

Apparently some people try to smuggle on beer in the soda cartons by replaced all the sodas with beer except the ones that show and glue it back together.  They are getting caught all the time.

One time in Ft Lauderdale I had numerous cans of soda scattered throughout my luggage (full size) and they questioned me if it was beer.

I told them to go right ahead & check it....they told me to proceed. 😄

I suppose I sounded convincing  enough.

Casual I wouldnt mind most of the time, but shorts, t-shirt and baseball cap at the table during a formal night ?

I for one applaud the new "do as you like dress code" and don't care what others choose to wear. As long as they don't return to the style that was forced upon their passengers a few years ago, I can now enjoy to relax at dinner dressed the way I think is appropriate.

From what I'm reading, the new Star Princess is going to offer different levels of attire in 3 different DR's. It should prove interesting to see if the food offered is the same and just how many people will choose each level.

Same thing on the cruise before yours Ford Lauderdale to LA, I am not sure if it is fleet wide but the Emerald Maitre D's are not holding any sort of standards in the MDRs.

It's the same way thought-out the fleet. Casual on every night no matter where you dine.

Have you looked at the details of the "Plus Fare"? Even if you don't drink alchohol they can be a good deal if you are each getting WIFI and paying the Crew Appreciation. WIFI is now $25/day/person and crew appreciation is $16/day/person. Since the Plus Fare is $60/day/person that leaves $19/day/person for everything else. Your 2 drinks will be more then that. If your wife would like bottled water, soda, specialty coffees and teas, smoothies, mocktails, hot chocolate, and fresh squeezed juices it would be pretty for her to use the $19. Then there are a number of other items that you might enjoy trying since they are included. I hope this helps!

Maybe they can raise the prices of everything else on the ship by 67% and the package will look like even a better deal. 😄

I too drive to Port Everglades. I have left  my vehicle at Park’N go several times. They are very convenient to the port.

Their vans drop you off and pick you up at the correct terminal.

Same with us. The guy from the parking lot is always waiting when we get off the ship with the first group of walk off's. Saves money without any headache of worrying about which terminal your at when returning.

Just off the Emerald Princess on the Panama Trip ending in Fort Lauderdale on Monday.

What's happened to the MDR dress policy of no shorts.

On this cruise there was more men wearing shorts and tee shirts than trousers and shirts also noticed guys wearing what looked liked swim wear, flip flops baseball caps and my wife also intimated that some of the women's dress sense was just as bad.

As for formal night I would say about 25% dressed for the evening but shorts were still in abundance in

    the MDR.

As you found out on the Emerald, even though they still publish what some would call a dress code, it's evident that they've taken a stance not to shame anyone into following even a portion of it. i.e.- hats, shorts, bathing suits.
