  1. Never forget the Greatest Generation, many of which gave all so that other could be free!!!!!!!
  2. This used to be SOP on HAL, a while back, keepin' alive the Dutch tradition, and yes, she wore "klompen" / wooden shoes, real ones 😉 ...............
  3. Right you are on that one! I, as have many other crew members, have gone to numerous markets around the world (The Winn Dixie in FLL off 17th Street is a crew fav as are the various Wal-Marts, but also in Seattle; Juneau; Hilo, HI; Sydney, Oz; Halifax, NS; Philipsburg, Curacao; Kanizawa, Japan, Palma de Mallorca, Spain, etc.) to purchase "provisions" (sealed and labeled) and have taken them onboard. Everything you bring on goes trough the X-Ray machine. Crew has brought on pizza (in the box)
  4. Looking good Jeroen! Enjoy! 🙂 Btw, which ship are you joining after your land tour?
  5. This used to be the Yum Yum Man, official title Doorman. The position is no longer active
  6. Yes, it is SOP that the room steward (not his asst.) is to inspect whatever issue is taking place with/in your cabin and, if unable to take care of business, he is to then request resources up the ladder. For door/lock issues, that individual is the locksmith. There are two of them; a senior locksmith and a locksmith. Now, at this time, you're dealing with two separate ship departments; your room steward and his asst. belong to the Housekeeping Dept. and the two locksmiths belong to the Deck/Nautical Dept. Regardless, if the locksmith can't take care of a specific door issue, up the ladder you go by requesting to have either a HK supervisor/cabin inspector/asst. housekeeper and/or the executive housekeeper/asst. hotel general manager and finally the hotel general manager (the old hotel director position) visit your cabin. For the "deckies," there are not that many upwardly mobile individuals; we're talking 1st officer and up to staff captain as far as the chain above the senior locksmith. For the door issue, you are describing, it should not have to take going all the way to the top to get it fixed to your satisfaction. By the sounds of it, replacing the weather stripping in the door jamb should make everyone, especially you, a semi-happy or happy camper Next time, forget the 3rd phone call and get yourself to the Front Office in person, especially after the 2nd visit by your room steward. Request to speak to a guest relations supervisor and/or asst. guest relations manager, and advise her/him that your steward has been out to your cabin 2-3 times and your door issue is still not taken care of. You can go as high as the guest relations manager while at the front office. You should get "something" for your troubles! Enjoy the rest of your voyage on Eurodam!
  7. Just a heads up; Carcross has an store known as the Matthew Watson General Store; you can't miss it because it's pink. There is some excellent ice cream to be had in there; the best in the Yukon! 😉
  8. Based on the info given by the OP, specifically the refusal by the other individual to turn the cabin TV volume down during the early morning hours of the night (and yes, that's unreasonable behavior towards a cabin mate and towards the occupants of adjoining staterooms - the other examples given by the OP describing the actions of said cabin mate are on the antisocial/odd side but not necessarily in violation of a cruise contract), it would have been reasonable to have requested a meeting with the guest relations manager and/or the hotel general manger (new title) or both, in order to have the OP go into detail about her cabin mate's behavior, and to describe her (the former) feelings of uneasiness/lack of comfort around the latter due to said behavior. More than likely, the cabin mate would have been called into a similar meeting (without the OP cabin mate present), given the opportunity to present her side of the story and, based on that outcome, given a warning, and instructed to cease and desist her antisocial behavior or run the distinct possibility to have to leave the vessel at the next port of call, and to have to find her own way home at her own expense without passing Go and collecting $200 If another cabin would have been available, it would more than likely have been offered to the OP. And yes, I have sat in during such meetings one more than one occasion, while working, the outcome of some of which saw the offending pax having been told that he/she/they were no longer welcome onboard for violating said cruise contract.
  9. Believe me, I know! 🙂 Especially after the end of WWII, lots and lots of Dutch sought a new life in Canada and left the old country. Holland America Line was a huge part of that sea journey to Halifax and Montreal
  10. Hey, the Canadians can't be copying a seriously tasty Dutch delicacy...........wazzup with that? 😉
  11. Yeah, that line after check-in at the counter was not pretty last time we flew out of YVR. Hope it has improved somewhat
  12. Just watched an old episode with "Buffalo Joe" and his team this week. They do have one Orion (plus four active Electras) still with a U.S. registration; N922AU, used for aerial firefighting. Hope you see some of them! Have a great time in Canada's Northwest Territories and the Yukon
  13. Last minute change of aircraft for your flight to Whitehorse tomorrow courtesy of 407 LRP Sqn from CFB Comox, BC (Vancouver Island); pretty sure you are familiar with this one and have no probs taking over from one of the operators in the back 😉 Enjoy your flight and the Yukon!
  14. Then the little flower girl is no relation! She (her last name) is a "van" Dijk. Captain Dijk (see pic with mike in hand) does not have a "van" in front of his 😉
  15. Have a great time! Thanking for making the effort to write a "live from" Mucho appreciated! :)
  16. Sounds like a good time, Tony! Here's hoping it comes to fruition without any more hiccups! I remember the first time sailing into my old city after immigrating to the States and hearing the early morning sounds and experiencing the sights of that great city. Actually got emotional experiencing that, tough former Marine and cop! go figure! 😉
  17. That's Windstar Cruises' (formerly part of HAL) Star Breeze, herself formerly the Seabourn Spirit Enjoy the Fairmont Vancouver Airport, one of my favorite hotels, used by HAL for newly joining crews in Vancouver to spend the night before embarking their ship the next day. Great views from your hotel window of the "flying machines" going to and from their gates
  18. Yep; she's in the press release: ".........Then-Princess Beatrix named Statendam IV in 1957 and Prinses Margriet in 1960. Nieuw Amsterdam II was launched by Queen Wilhelmina in 1937" Former Queen Beatrix, the current King's mum, was her godmother as Princess Beatrix
  19. Are you referring to former HAL Captain Jacob Dijk or former HAL Captain Arie van Dijk? It's always possible that little Nora van Dijk's "opa" was a HAL captain in the late fifties and sixties however, one would think a connection like that would be mentioned in the press release, besides her mum being a 15-year HAL sales employee in the Rotterdam office. Also, the "van Dijk" name is a pretty common name in the Netherlands but it's cool theory! 😉
