  1. Everyone seems to make such a big deal about the lobster. Generally these are warm water lobster tails - little, rubbery tails that are really not very good. This is not a lobster tail that you'd get in a fine steakhouse at home.

Believe it or not there are people that never go to a fine steakhouse at home. They save for a great vacation and only then enjoy steak and lobster.

  2. On our first cruise, my daughter and I booked just three weeks in advance in early December. Huge bargain, about $500 each for five nights. You can get deals like this in the time between American Thanksgiving and before Christmas. We knew nothing and had a fabulous time. What did we care which ports we went to? We'd never been to any of them. Both were in Mexico -Cozumel and Costa Maya. Had a fine time walking around a bit, and people on board gave us advice and info. It went fine.

We just happened to sail on RCI because that suited our dates, but another line would have been fine too. Weather was cold and rainy a couple of days, but we didn't care. It wasn't snowing. We explored every bit of that ship, and participated in everything. Went to the shows, did the Trivia, took in the live music in the bars, ate in the Dining Room and the buffet, and loved that we could order room service for just the price of a decent tip.

I agree with the advice that, coming from Canada, you should fly in before the day of departure and stay overnight. We almost missed the cruise because of snow and delays. If you miss the ship, that's your problem, both from the departure port and any stops along the way. Number One rule: get onto the ship on time, everywhere.

Don't sweat this. Book a cruise that suits your dates and your budget. Try it out, and be open to enjoying everything. Once you've got one under your belt you can be more particular about destinations, cruise lines, etc. Anyone on Cruise Critic will tell you, any cruise is fine, and always better than no cruise at all.

  3. I have cruise both Carnival and Royal. I love Royal! For your first I would suggest a great ship. Either Harmony, Oasis or Allure on Royal. So much to do and you won't get bored in the week. For me the ports are secondary. You spend maybe 6 hours at each of 3 ports. But much longer time on the ship. Mid ship or rat is better than forward. Lower decks are. Tommy preference but are not bad. But do book right away.

  4. I think the best solution is for any new ships be designed with more than the dozen or so solo cabins. Royal is basically pay the full cabin rate as if 2 were traveling. I have 2 solo cruises planned with them. But would cruise more often if it were say 1.5 or some reasonable discount. I know this negatively affect the ship's bottom line but so would it positively affect it if I cruises more often. Especially during months schools are in session. Thanks for asking

  5. Once one learns the law/regulation of a country they plan to visit, the only conversation that should follow is how they will respect and obey the law. Confirm you have been advised accurately and drop it. You do not have to approve of their law but you do ha e to obey it and no one needs to defet it to anyone. If you don't like it, stay on the ship and you can wear your military garb if you wish. Please don't come back her an complain if he three year child and shaperone/parents are ordered to go back and change the child's clothes, should you choose to ignore the law..

  6. A week long cruise in an ocean balcony room on an Oasis class ship is $2500 for 2 people. That's about $175 a day per person. This gives you a room, 3 meals a day, snacks, deserts, entertainment, being waited on, 3 to 4 countries to see, swimming pools, fitness center, mini golf, basketball court, rock climbing wall, surf simulator, zip line, water slides, housekeeping services, tea, coffee, lemonade, games, private ocean view balcony with seating, new people to meet... I'd say it's a bargain!

  7. As others have said, knowing budget and your wife's interests would be nice. But here are some general options:

If you are on Oasis, Allure, Harmony, or Anthem, the suites themselves as well as the perks are fantastic. If on other ships, Junior Suite is a nice large stateroom that feels like a hotel. If those are in your budget, I'd definitely start there. If not, a balcony stateroom is a nice upgrade.

The romance packages are a nice touch: https://secure.royalcaribbean.com/royalgifts/onboard-delivery/packages/romance-packages/

Also a couples massage or some pampering treatments for her (facial, massage, etc) are always nice. You can pre-book those on your cruise planner.

    Great options on this link
