However, selling an Australian cruise for Australian passengers in Australia, I believe they have to comply with Australian laws.

In theory yes but in practice it seems to be hard to enforce. I have heard of lots of accounts of Australians dealing with foreign companies who even after succeeding through all the consumer resolution processes can't get their refund🙄. Unless you plan on launching some sort of court case it seems to be hard to get these companies to cough up if they dig their heels in.

And somehow it seems sad to see what could be beautiful beaches so devastated with those shrinking hulks.

The doco I saw was in Pakistan in somewhere that was a mud flat than a beach and without before and after pictures I have no idea what the natural environment consisted off but I wouldn't be surprised if they were using beach environments as breakyards. There are some gorgeous coastlines along Pakistan and around India but they don't exactly have thriving beach tourism beyond Goa and with the fishing industry in decline breakyards would be more lucrative. If it is anything like how they run coal ports I doubt the locals protests would have been considered. Getting back to the pollution thing I do remember them burning huge piles of stuff that they said was not marketable that would be another thing that would be good to stop. I can't imagine that is good for the environment or human health😳.

Does anyone feel any (very indirect) responsibility for the notion that their support of the cruise industry leads to this sort of pollution?

I wouldn't say I feel responsible but there is always room for improvement and there is nothing wrong with contemplating such improvements. I for one wouldn't mind if cruise lines researched a way to decrease plastic or at least use recyclable plastic in their design and it would be nice if there was more advocacy for those breakyard workers. It seems nonsensical that people are risking their lives to dismantle ships.

We had a contract with Ponant which stated if Ponant cancelled for any reason they would refund. They then proceeded to change that clause retrospectively and denied all passengers refunds.
We would never trust them again.

Isn't Ponant a French company? I heard that France passed a law that businesses in their travel industry are allowed to deny.

  5. If you have Foxtel you might be interested in the HBO documentary The Last Cruise. The synopsis sounds a bit over top but I'll reserve judgement till I've seen it:

The Last Cruise chronicles the first and largest outbreak of the novel coronavirus outside China: the Diamond Princess cruise liner. Through never-before-seen footage from passengers and crew, we watch class divisions erupt as humanity misses its chance to contain Covid-19.

So by the clue we are in the Yukon so I'll throw out Kaskawulsh Glacier. There are so many glaciers that are receding in the Canadian North.

Much further East. I'm going to make it easier (I seem to have overestimated its familiarity😳) it is sitting on a volcano infamous for stopping the world 😉

    Glacial Moraine?

Probably my fault for my wording of the question😂. Though techically I'm not sure if it is classed as Moraine or maybe it is now (there's a clue)😜. Not too long ago it looked very different. It would be nice to get a name for this glacier🤗.

Our governments don't want cruise ships here as they all seem to think they are floating petri dishes and/or only for those who are rich. 🙄 😡

Just curious but have cruise lines put any proposals for moving forward? Are they discussing with the government? In USA they have been oddly silent and seem to be just waiting for all restrictions to be lifted rather than even try to negotiate with the restriction that have been announced by I think it is the CDC. Is there a little more conversation happening in Australia?

Very concerned re what Insurance/Health requirements are going to be imposed by the cruise lines prior to embarkation.  To find cover that includes cruise travel and Covid is near on impossible and then throw in an over 80 with health issues.  Not game to book a cruise until all of this had been sorted.

Hopefully vaccination will suffice in lieu of covid insurance??  Who knows ??  Will just have to sit patiently and wait!!

In Singapore the cruise line provides Covid insurance which is mandatory to purchase with your cruise booking.
