  1. River cruises are euro only in Europe (even when traveling in non-euro countries). Egypt is Egyptian pounds and I'm not sure about Vietnam/Cambodia.
  2. You have to register a credit card (just like at a hotel) but you can always tell them that you wish to pay in cash (no checks, no travelers checks) at the end of the cruise. The onboard currency is USD (United States Dollar) -- everything is charged in dollars and paid in dollars.
  3. What are the start times for the Viking tours? This should give you an idea if 8:30am is a feasible pickup time.
  4. Access to your stateroom is whenever it is ready and many are ready long before the brochure time. Don't hang around killing time until 2pm, check as soon as you board. Viking only announces when all of the cabins are ready for occupancy. Launderettes are only on Decks 3 though 6 and are located on the port(even) side of the ship, in an interior space, opposite the cabins. Midnight Sun is sometimes joined with another itinerary to make Baltic Jewels & the Midnight Sun which will sail twice in July, 2023 and one in May, 2024.
  5. How did travel and boarding go with the scooter? As you go along, comments about accessibility/easy of access would be greatly appreciated; with the older demographic, it is an area of interest.
  6. Here's the link: Viking Ocean Rookie Experience And here is what OP has shared since leaving home. (pre-cruise, June 4) Well the adventure never ends. Wife broke foot and now uses a knee scooter. Read on board experience on MVJ and it said scooters were not allowed. Called Viking and they said that means motorized scooters. They further said that she might have trouble with some of the excursions. We are still going through and she says that if she can’t do an excursion she will treat it as a sea day. Two weeks and two days till we board. June 19 Well we are in Bergen. Was a long day of flying and waiting. Delta special services was great. Wheelchair to gate and to plane door in Atlanta. Then cart ride through Amsterdam airport. Then another wheelchair to curb in Bergen. Took Flybussen to right in front of our hotel. 200 Kroner (about $20 US for two seniors paid online in advance) and a 40 minute ride and literally dropped us at door of Clarion Collection Hotel. Pleasant surprise was an upgrade to a huge corner suite because of my wife’s birthday ( they knew because I had ordered flowers). Had free pancakes at 3:00 PM and the small dining room was full. Everyone likes free pancakes I guess! Highly recommended this hotel. We can see our ship from our suite. Embarkation tomorrow, could walk but cobblestones and mobility impaired wife means a cab. Dinner details and boarding experience in next post.
  7. All DV cabins are treated alike. Shorex open 67 days prior to start date, dining reservations 60 days prior, whether you are a DV1 or a DV6. For details on cabin amenities by category click here and then scroll down; the information is the same for all of the ships. Embarkation is the same for all guests: first-come-first-served once disembarkation is complete (usually around 10 am). DV cabins are promised to be ready by 2pm -- but are usually ready before then. There is no announcement about cabin readiness until all of the cabins are ready. You may check your cabin any time to see if it is ready.
  8. Tips for New Viking Ocean Cruisers (read the first couple of pages and then skip to p.41, post #1115, post hiatus) Live from Viking Saturn June 7-21 NYC-Canada-Greenland-Iceland The last part of this itinerary is the same circumnavigation of Iceland that you will be doing.
  9. I could have happily stood on that platform shooting pictures until both cameras and phone ran out of battery. Unfortunately, at that point the return bus would have been long gone.
  10. Yes, please do. You have a lot to share and a lot more people will follow along when they see that you are talking about a specific itinerary. Title it something like "LIVE from the (Itinerary name) (dates)"
  11. Even Viking cannot prevent the airlines from canceling flights, changing their schedules and changing the contracts. Flying these days is worse than ever. When we booked our own flights, the airline cancelled both of our noon flights coming and going; we ended up on a very early morning flight out and the red-eye home (which meant hanging around for over 12 hours). It doesn't matter who books the flights, the airlines run the show and will do what they want.
  12. Agreed! Highly recommended. Some of my best puffin pictures came from there. Plus the pure beauty of the location, even in the haze we encountered the morning we were there.. Our guide in 2021 was the owner and manager of the property. Skalanes is not just a tourist destination; it is also an active research station for academics and their students from around the world.
  13. Everyone is saying no problem to get an early flight but I would check your Viking Guest Statement. Usually it says on the statement what the earliest time you can book a flight for is. Even if the ship arrives at 3 am, there is Customs and Passport Control to be considered. It all depends on when they show up for work how early folks can disembark. If it is there, it will say something like this:
  14. It was beyond strange, it was down right freaky. I hope it gets reported to the techs, to make sure that there hasn't been some sort of hack.
  15. Okay, you said the magic word: allergies. Why not email the ship's executive chef? It's a special occasion. Allergies are involved. Your menu choices are limited. You know exactly what date you are looking for. What you need from this thread is his name and the ship's email address.
  16. Even having that information is no guarantee of what will be served on your sailing. Chef's Table menus are on their own schedule and the menu changes every three days without regard to the start date of each new cruise. What was served in Halifax on one cruise is not a predictor of what will be served in Halifax on future cruises. Even knowing what menus were served on the last sailing is not a predictor of what will be served on the next sailing.
  17. I love how there is always someone taking the time to ponder life's deepest questions. I also like how there is always some smart-alec with an answer. Leap year is not a problem. They take an extra day in the Canaries on the way north.
  18. We booked with Grayline for their Golden Circle Tour in 2021. Pricing was similar, lunch not included. They picked us up at the ship (luggage and all) and dropped us near our hotel at the end of day.
  19. Would you talk a little about the weather that you have encountered on this trip and a bit about wardrobe? Did you bring the right shoes/boots? Sailing at this time of year, did you need warm boots? Waterproof boots? Are there any wardrobe items that you regret not having brought? Are there wardrobe items that you highly recommend for this trip (as in don't leave home without them)? Thanks in advance.
  20. If there was a charge for it perhaps it was because they were asking for it outside of meal hours. Except with the drinks package, soft drinks are charged for outside of meal hours.
  21. Lol. I was always sure that rare meant special; I just didn't know how. Took awhile to figure it out.
  22. The "rare" badge is for those whose live posts have been brought to the attention of the management. I'm not sure what the ship is for. There are badges as well but no place that I can find that describes why or how they are awarded. If you go back to Patti's original post, you will see the message from Community Manager Laura at the top of her post awarding her the badge.
