  1. Is a 9:55 am flight out of Fort Lauderdale too iffy? We'll be coming into the Miami port. We're in the Haven, so we should be able to hop off first. I'm wanting to chance it...

Norwegian suggest booking flights out of FLL after 12:30 PM. You never know when the ship will be delayed by customs, until they clear the ship no one gets off.

I don't think I would want that kind of stress on the last morning, if there aren't any better options for flights why not extend your stay in Miami another day.

  2. JoAnn, are there still issues with the iconcierge app and being able to phone off the ship with it at a discounted rate? In December on the Breakaway that part of the app wasn't working, so was useless for us. Internet manager said it was an issue and wasn't working for anyone, and we were able to get the $7.95 app fee back. We'll be back on board on the 17th and need phone use daily and hated paying the $4.99 per minute for the cabin phone.

  3. We are booked on the Jade out of Venice later this summer. I can't find anywhere on the website ( where the itinerary is listed) mention which ports are tender or port.

Can someone kindly point me in the right direction for this info ?

  6. NCL has new promos out - at least I didn't see true 3rd and 4th passenger free promos last month.

This page has the sailing with free 3rd and 4th: https://www.ncl.com/vacations/2-guests-free-extra-guests?sailingmerchandisingspecials=4294900842

I also noticed that the UBP now includes fountain soda drinks ... is that the same as before, with the only fountain soda available the mixer sodas (tonic water, etc.)?

UBP has always included fountain soda, and virgin drinks. Just no cans of soda.

  7. Happy Birthday, meltingmoments! Thanks for spending part of your special day with us here at Cruise Critic!

Sending you positive thoughts for a nice upgrade. :)

22 Haven suites left with less than 2 weeks to sell them.....expect quite a few upsell offers to go out very soon ;) We already moved to the Haven aft suite nothing left in the higher suites that interest us.

  9. Is that about average, or have I picked a lousy time to call?

I can't access the website either; it's giving me the "uh oh"

Do any of you seasoned NCLers have more experience with typical call waits and could advise me to either wait it out or call in the morning? TIA

Website just worked for me, I was checking pricing. The current promotion ends tonight at 11:59 PM EST so they will be very busy. If you are doing a new booking, keep trying....if you can at least get to a Courtesy hold on the website that will keep the reservation/promotion in place for up to 24 hours.

You might try another browser for the website, sometimes Chrome works better than Firefox.....other times it's the other way around.

  10. I thought I understood this but am doubtful now after reading some conflicting posts. My husband and I are cruising 1/10/16 on Star and chose the $50 excursion credit; our son is with us and he is free. It was my understanding that we get essentially $50 per person (NOT including my son) credit. Another post said per "stateroom. I booked excursions through NCL and they said I would have to obtain the credit through the excursion desk. (E.g currently it says we ow the full price of the excursions, we will get discounted on the ship. No mention of whether it was $50 pp or per stateroom as I didn't think to ask) Thoughts?

It's per cabin, not per person. This is from the Terms and Conditions on the current promotion that ends this evening.

    Shore Excursion Credit Offer:

$50 shore excursion credit is per stateroom.

    Limit 4 ports.

Shore excursion credit is applicable for each port, and is not transferable to other ports. Use the credit or lose it.

Limit 4 ports. Credit has no monetary value and is nonrefundable.

Itineraries visiting less than 4 ports for any reason are not eligible for a refund or credit.

In the event a port of call is missed, for any reason, no refund or credit will be issued.

Does not include embarkation and debarkation ports. Overnight stays count as one port, except Bermuda sailings which can receive up to 3 individual days of shore excursion credit.

Shore excursion credit can only be redeemed by calling 1-866-625-1167 or booking onboard.

Shore excursion credit has no monetary value, is non-refundable and non-transferable.

  11. We are considering the excursion promotion...but can that only be used as $50/port and not combined for one great excursion?

  12. Yes, we are in DOS and was told by NCL that I should be able to book now.

I've cruised in a DOS on the STAR, wonderful suite. The reservations should open up on the website in the next couple of days. You may be able to contact the pre-cruise concierge and have then do the reservations for you, they may have access before they are posted on the website.

  13. This will be a long one ... My husband and I are going on our first cruise on the Norwegian Breakaway from 1/17-1/31. We have done a lot of research and still have some questions:

    ROOM:

We booked a guarantee mini-suite. We only saw two rooms listed in the NCL book. Assuming we are not one of only two people/couples who have these rooms, what is comparable to what we will have booked?

    CHECK IN:

We selected a 9:30 time at the port when we completed our online check-in. From what we have read, gives us a number when we will actually get on the boat. We wanted to be there early in case we get an upgrade and so we can get Vibe (and hopefully Cabana passes - see next question) How does this process work?

    SPICE H20 / VIBE / CABANA:

We are going on vacation without the kids, so we love the idea of an adult pool where we aren't around a lot of kids. (Granted being on a 14-day cruise during school we don't anticipate the number of kids we would encounter at other times) We aren't big partiers, but we do like some music and our drinks. Is it worth the $399 for the Cabana at Vibe? We would love input on Spice H2O, Vibe, and the Cabanas at Vibe. Also - where is Vibe located? We couldn't find it on the NCL deck plans.

    PORTS / EXCURSIONS:

We have gone on all-inclusive vacations for 20+ years - always to all-inclusive resorts, so this is a VERY new experience for us. We are debating on whether to book excursions or just explore at our destinations. We are going to:

    SAN JUAN - PUERTO RICO

    ST THOMAS - USVI

    TORTOLA - BVI

    PHILIPSBURG - ST MAARTEN

    ROSEAU - DOMINICA

    BRIDGETOWN - BARBADOS

    MARTINIQUE

    BASSE TERRE - ST KITTS

    SNORKLE GEAR

If we brought our own snorkel gear, could we go to public beaches and use our own gear?

    GRATUITY

We are concerned whether the staff will get the money we pay to the ship for tips. We have always tipped all of our staff very well and we would prefer to pay them directly - not through the cruise. Is this possible? Do they actually get this money??

We are pretty laid back, so we know we will have a great time no matter what. We appreciate any tips y'all are willing to give us! THANK YOU in advance!! :D

Hi, We're also on the same sailing. We've done the 12 day cruises on the Breakaway the last 2 years now. Stop by the roll call and you can chat with others on the same sailing and help us count down the days until the cruise.

    http://boards.cruisecritic.com/showthread.php?t=2161888

With the guarantee mini suite you could end up in one of those 2 cabins in that category, or anything higher. Most likely it will be one of the higher mini suite category options....some have larger balconies than others.

There won't be many children on the 14 day sailing, it's just too long of a cruise in January to have the kids out of school. Spice H2o is a great/free adults only area, and it has plenty of available chairs and a nice bar and wait staff. There isn't an adults only pool on the ship, Vibe doesn't have a pool. Personally I would save the vibe money and use it for shore excursions, this cruise has a wonderful itinerary. Bringing your own snorkel gear is handy. Leaving the automatic daily service charge is the best way to deal with the gratuities, since with freestyle cruising you will have different wait staff all the time so unless you plan to carry cash and tip each person as you go the daily service charge works well and is what the staff expect. We normally tip the cabin steward and anyone who really goes above and beyond in cash above and beyond the daily service charge.

  14. Has anyone else had this happen?

I am within 100 days of my upcoming cruise and have already PIF. I went on-line to book dining and entertainment but I am not able to reserve anything in those categories yet. I called NCL and was told that, "Yes, should be able to book them now but that sometimes NCL's computer system is slow and so it may take a few more days. Was told to call back if I can't yet book 95 days out.

Is this normal? I have never had this problem before.

Are you booked in a full suite or Haven suite? If not the dining and entertainment options won't show up until 90 days pre-cruise. Still, the website does have issues and it doesn't always show up at the 90 or 100 days pre-cruise date.

  15. Hi All,

I have a quick question regarding upgrades on Soda Packages, sorry if it has already been asked but couldn't find any reference to it on the search function!

I am booked to go on BA in July, and got the freestyle offer. Unfortunately because I am a solo traveller in a solo cabin I couldn't get the UBP as my cabin class is only high enough to get the soda package.

My TA says I should be able to get this upgraded to UBP and just pay the difference. Does anyone have any experience of this? Is it possible?

The soda package is no use to me - I only have 2 or 3 soft drinks during the day, I drink cocktails in the evening mostly with the odd glass of wine with dinner (no I'm not an alcoholic! I'm just Scottish! :D) But as it had the most value for money attached to it my TA automatically chooses it for their guests.

any info on this would be greatly appreciated! Thanks :)

You can't upgrade from the soda package to the Ultimate beverage package.

What I would do, since you are before final payment.....cancel and rebook. With the current promotion studio cabins have the Ultimate beverage package option right now.

Check to see if your pricing has changed....or if your TA will charge you a fee to cancel and rebook.

  16. Going on 14 nt cruise out of NY on breakaway for southern Caribbean cruise. Does anyone have suggestions on what the best excursions are to do?

    http://boards.cruisecritic.com/forumdisplay.php?f=783

Check out the roll call for your sailing date, I'm on the January 17th sailing and I know our roll call as well as the others for the 3rd and 31st of January all have discussions on what everyone is doing in each port.....as well as options for joining others who have booked independent shore excursions.

  17. Is there a White hot party ,not sure of name on Pride of America. We going in April and what to make sure of what to bring with us.

It is a White Hot Party...

    White Hot Party

Ice ice baby. Don your white attire and get to the pool deck for the most invigorating, black light glowing, electrifying party beneath the stars. Dance with our white-winged angels and be sure to purchase a souvenir t-shirt.

  18. Not all of the ships have the portable phone--Star did not. It sure is nice to have one though. I agree the bathroom scale was a puzzle to us since we never weigh ourselves but maybe someone does. I am looking forward to M&Ms on the Jade.

OP- I read on CC if you do not bring your own binoculars you can request a pair. I bring mine and the DH and I switch off from binoculars to our camera with zoom lens. It is nice to have to watch the sea life.

I've had the portable phone on the STAR in the past...maybe that depends on the cabin type there. I was in the deluxe owners suite on the STAR the last time I sailed the STAR.

  19. Sailing on the Gem in November. Aside from the published suite amenities from NCL, did you find that there were any other perks on your cruise?

Love the portable phone to use on the ship, that isn't normally mentioned as a suite perk but it comes in handy trying to locate people at times.

We've had the M&M's ...plain and peanut, and the gummy bears were sorted by the butler so he only left the red and orange for me :). They bring my husband bar mix frequently, so that must be listed in his permanent file. Many cruises we've been escorted down and off the ship first in port...as well as priority for embarkation and disembarkation. Bathrobes, and slippers are always a nice touch in the suites. Bathroom scales I can live without.
