  1. Vodafone has tourist plans. Same for Orange. Google store locations close to where you'll be; you'll need passport to setup service. 4G service in most of Spain is very good. I had Tuenti/Movistar service

For GPS offline usage (no data) check out iGo app that uses off line maps. Check on GPSpower forum.

  2. Definitely San Sebastian but work on logistics on how to get there. Takes long on public transit, at least 1 hr to get from port to Bilbao termibus station (faster on taxi) then another 1.5 hr bus ride to SS. Car rental is better option, there is Avis and Budget in town where port is (Getxo).

  3. Last I took cab there was about 8 euro for 15 min ride. Your ride to Cais de Ribeira is about 8 miles and 22 min (some on freeway) according to Google Maps so I'd guess 20 euro. Metro is longer and needs transfer but it's reliable.

  4. Lots of good high end hotels are around Avenida metro on Avenida da Liberdade. I wouldn't stay in Belem (too far out and no good hotels) and Baixa is hilly but great for bar hopping.

Very easy to visit any place in the city on public transit (24hr metro/bus/tram pass is 7 euro). Cheaper and faster than HOHO, Belem is on tram 15, Alfama - tram 28. If you want go to Sintra - 45 min train from Rossio. Also there metro now in LIS airport.

  5. General observation on logistics. Usually there is good transportation (primarily bus) between smaller towns and points in between (for example lots of busses between Santander and Bilbao (with stops in sea side villages like Laredo) or Bilbao and San Sebastian but poor connections to less inhabited villages or parks. Also smaller towns don't get large number of tourists so not too many organised out of town trips. Wineries not located in towns are hard to get to without car. From Santander its possible to get to Potes (Picos De Europa) by bus.

Having said that there is not much to do in place like Santander or similar size for 5 nights unless going on side trips or treating it as a stay put beach holiday

  6. Legit shops that's been there long time (ones I mentioned) likely will disclose especially if they sell similar looking items at different prices. There is also proper labelling although can be counterfeited. Most of the more expensive jewellery items are local. Something in 5-10 euro ballpark from street stalls probably not genuine.

  7. Before going to Murano check stores near Santa Lucia railway station (on Lista Di Spagna street going in direction of Jewish Ghetto). They tend to be slightly cheaper and sell anything glass from cheap souvenirs to expensive statues.

  8. Unless you going on points there is reasonably inexpensive Turkish flight (via Istanbul) that leave ORD on Oct 6 at 9:30pm and arrive VCE next day. If you got points and can get to Toronto on Oct 7 in the morning then can catch Air Canada nonstop @5pm arriving VCE 7:30am Oct 8 for about $700US. That is definitely good for 5pm departure. Even if you buy fare to Toronto consider that it saves 1 night expensive hotel in Venice. Presently lowest fare is around $215US for Oct 7 on AC. Another company Porter flies from Chicago Midway to Toronto Island downtown airport, To get to main airport from there cab or free shuttle to train station and Pearson express from there. Cost about same.
