  1. and that how fires start over loading the out let:D so an eletrical engineer would know this? here is some thing ofr you to work out

how many power out lets to you have in your? and most homes have 80 amp circit breaker attached to that would 20 amp circit breaker and on that circit you can have 10 x 10 amp out lets, let me know what you come up with

so we have 10 10 amp out lets on 20 AMP circit which a common size in every house,if were to plug in three 10 amp applience and turn them on you trip the 20 amp circit.

  2. No, quite the opposite. But it seems closer to what you're saying.

Which is still irrelevant and incorrect.

Having a powerboard attached does not enable the wall socket and circuit to handle more power than it is already rated to. Hence, they don't supply more power than they already can for those sockets.

  3. Except it doesn't work that way.

They're not (and couldn't) pump out 4 times the power because they expect everyone has a power board.

the same way our power companies pump out 10000 times more power at any givin time they want or have to. if the power companies could control how much each house hold can use by limiting the out lets and power boards, they would do it.

Do you think that on a ship they just start up there generator/ generators and just let them run max out put all the time with no control over how much power they produce?

eg if they can generate a max of 2000 kilowatts for each generater and they have three of them, which is a max of 6000 kilowatts they know how power they need to power the ships utilties and engines, the power usage in the cabins are what they are tring to control how much power each cabin uses the could run there generaters at 4000 kilowatts or less wich over the course of year could save them millions dollars.

  4. They wouldn't be reducing supply, and hence saving money. The current sockets would continue to be supplied as they are.

    It's a safety change.

I did not say they were reducing supply, I said they cam manage there supply better, if they control how many thing can be pluged in at each out let they can manage the supply better. exemple if have 1000 out lets with a power board with 4 out lets in it = 4000 out lets could used hence more power has to produced, if they can control every cabin down to 2 applience they could save money ( as most cabins have 2 out lets which mean 8 out lets per cabin then it could be 2000 outlets =8000 outlets.
  5. The problem is that in this instance we are talking about US visiting ships and they will most likely have US plugs.

Holland America has a limited number of powerboards/strips that they loan out but they were US sockets. Also the one that was given to us was in appalling condition with wires hanging out of the cord and loose fittings.

usa power out lets are way different to Australian out lets and you need a adapter

from reading on the poaustralia board on cc they pluging up the earth terminal so you can plug in a power board, i can see why they doing this, so they can manage there electricity and be more efficient about it, so they the cruise line can save money on there fuel costs

  6. Maybe like the one I have at home, it has four outlets and a circuit breaker, If 10 amps is exceeded a little button pops out and turns it off.

Thatwould work in Australia, as Australia has rules about what amp out we have Australia wide eg 10amp 20amp 30amp, But who knows what amps are the out lets on ships it could 6 or 8. how can you be sure? if it was 6 or 8 amp out let, your 10 amp pop out button will pop out after it damaged the ships wireing.

  7. I am not disagreeing at all with any of the valid suggestions being made' date=' they are informative, however I do not like the abusive terms used to put forward that information......

Were these extra sentences necessary? I don't believe they were. If you are passing on relevant and factual information, you don't have to brow-beat people as well. :(

    abusive?
  8. It would be sooooo nice if one poster didn't have a pressing need to ridicule other people all the time. A simple, helpful reply would be nice whether in agreeance or not. :)

We take a power board for charging cameras and DH's shaver, but especially for medical equipment, bearing in mind the difference in voltages and in frequencies.

Agree with you. It is almost like the behaviour of a school-yard bully !
it was only a idea into how he could solve the problem of charging all of is cameras with out a power board.
  9. before we could use mobile phone on cruises the world did not end and many people on cruises were not the last person alive in their family,

    it all worked fine,

Every one could watch a show on board with out a phone ringing, or have dinner or lunch or even breccy for that matter. if any one needed to get in contact with and passenger on any cruise ship in any part of the world before cell / mobile phones started to work on cruise ships, The big 'was'

was they could ring the ship and talk to any one they want to, the funny thing you still can.

The most entertaining the back then was watch all the people as soon we go near a port they all would run out side trying get there phones to work, so funny.

  10. This is a stupid question from an American. What is a powerboard? You mean what we call a power strip-three-10 outlets powered off one plug in?

IF so, they can be VERY dangerous. My dear departed DH was an electrical engineer. Even at home, he was always checking, checking, checking the few power strips he would allow in the house. IF we needed more outlets, he just ran another circuit which you obviously can't do on a cruise ship.

I remember one time he walked into the bathroom. Perched on a shelf was a power strip with my blow dryer, electric toothbrush, curling iron and make up airbrush kit all pulled in. I didn't hear the end of that for a LOOOONG time. We had a 4 outlet plug installed by the end of the week.

yes power strip is a power board, and most AUSTRALIANS wear thongs in public sorry could not help that one:D

  11. Ok, here is a question for you.

A room has one power point; we are a family of 3.

I have 3 digital cameras (two of them go underwater) and a Video camera,

My dad has a digital camera ,

Me and my dad both have shavers, and cell phones, plus a notebook computer.

How do we charge these things up, while we are on a 10+night cruise???, we use a Power board and we have been using a Power board on all 14 cruises we have done.

leave the cell phones in the safe and don't use them, leave the note book in the cabin in the day time on charge and share it with the cameras don't need to be on charge all the time and all the same time , most phones and cameras charge up full in an hour or two, as for the shaving just use a bic and make more time for the other chargers ( they are lighter to carry)

if you manage the charging time right you will only need one power point and you have more time to enjoy the cruise ship and what it has to offer

  12. We just got back from a cruise on the Dawn. We were in Suite 11115 which is directly under Salt Grill.

Water: Pretty much unlimited. They replace them twice a day so we used to remove them from the fridge and put them in a cupboard. That way you end up with extra bottles for days you're in port.

Coffee: You get a Nespresso machine and they replace the pods twice a day. They also provide milk twice a day' date=' so unless you're a big coffee drinker you'll never run out.

Washing: You can send a bag of washing every day. Make sure you tick the "same say" option which normally adds 50% to the cost but for Suite guests it's still free.

Afternoon Tea: You can order afternoon tea every afternoon. Make sure you do because it's like a high tea and you'll get some goodies that you won't get anywhere else on the ship.

Canapés on Formal Nights: you'll get a couple of glasses of champaign and some Canapés delivered to your room at approx 5pm on Formal nights.

Room Service Breakfast: Suite guests can order room service breakfast (leave the order on your door when you go to bed). Make sure you do because the breakfasts are really very good and it saves having to deal with the hungry hordes in the buffet.

Senior Officers Cocktail Party: You'll receive an invitation in your room. Formal wear is required and you'll be taken to a private room for the party. All the senior officers will be there and you'll get a photo with the Captain. Each suite couple end up pairing off with an Officer and you have a chat, a few drinks (champaign, beer, etc.) and there is nibbles bought around the whole time. We paired up with the Food and Beverage Director and had a great time. At the end of the party, you'll receive a free copy of your photo with the captain.

Room Service: The Dawn has a relatively broad range of room service dishes available 24/7. As a Suite guest you get this at no cost. The menu in your room still has prices (as does the laundry bag) but when it turns up you won't have to pay for it (except for drinks).

Priority Check In: When you get your cruise card, you'll get a priority boarding card. When they first open up boarding it will be solely for priority guests..... If you don't turn up early, this will be meaningless....

Priority Tender: you'll get priority tender tickets. Everyone else has to wait for ages. With priority tender tickets, you just rock up and go straight to the queue on the next tender.... This was well worth it!!!!

Priority Disembarkation: This alone makes it worth paying for a suite! You will be first off the ship and your luggage will be in a section with other suite guests luggage. Since there are only 14 suites, finding your luggage will take 2 seconds and you'll get through customs without having to queue. On our cruise a few people managed to get off the ship at the same time as us Suite passengers and when they got to the baggage claim area they were told to bugger off because their luggage wasn't there yet.[/quote']

I have to agree with you and this is why we only cruise in suites and no putting up with some bogans

  13. I wonder if the power boards would be accepted if they were certified and tagged as safe by an electrician. I know that crew have to have all electrical items including power boards checked by the on-board electrician and tagged.

Of course it would cost a fair bit to have an electrician check and tag items and obviously the on-board electrician wouldn't have time to check passengers' personal items. :)

but will the electrician sertify that it is safe to take on to a cruise ship at any time after he or she has tested the item for the next year?

and if he would be able to pay for the damage ,if the power board was found to faulty and the cause of the fire?

The answer would be no as the test and tage is only good for one year on power boards and the test is only on what they see and tested on the day of testing and the rest of the year anything could happen to it.

But on ships and cruise ships power boards and leads are tested every month.

  14. Actually I have a few....

Doing the W929 cruise with my Mum in October and we have a Suite booked. According to my brochure, there are some inclusions but I just wanted some addiitonal info on it...

Do we get bottled water daily, or is it a once off?

What is the sweet dreams surprise?

Is the complimentary laundry a once off or is it as needed?

Does we need to take our own coffee or is it supplied?

How does the preferred check in and preferred dinner thing work?

Getting very exciting, hope to see some of you there!!

    Larissa

Do we get bottled water daily, or is it a once off? the water is restocked every day but on shore days you can ask for more free

What is the sweet dreams surprise? sweets and orderves

Is the complimentary laundry a once off or is it as needed? they allow one washing bags a day they are paper and you can get o lot in them.

Does we need to take our own coffee or is it supplied? supplied

How does the preferred check in and preferred dinner thing work? dinning you can book the time you like with in the dinning hours.

you get to go on board first

  15. on Australian based cruise ships it is not a tipping thing and is well known, true.........................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................,
