  1. There is a non stop express train for cruise passengers. This yr it only runs once a day in each direction. Only stops at S Pietro and Ostiense. Makes it so easy for sightseeing. 15E RT. And there's a shuttle from the pier to the train station for about 3E. Civitavecchia Express: non-stop train for cruise passengers | Port Mobility Civitavecchia Since your questions are specific to Rome, you might want to check out the Italy forum for lots of helpful info.
  2. We were on the Epic in Sept 2019. We did Rome DIY, via the train. We took the train to the SanPietro stop, where it's a 15 walk to the Vatican ( you;ll see Vatican roof tops from the station; so easy to find). Then you could catch a cab to the Colossum. We thought the Ostiense station would be easier to negotiate than Termini so we took a cab to Ostiense. We also included stops at Castel SanAngelo, Piazza Navone, Trevi Fountain, Parthenon (as well as pizza and gelatto). Caught a train around 9am and ret'd on the 4pm. Since you only want to see those 2 sites you'll have plenty of time. p.s. we were a group of 4 ( 60-70 yrs old) and our total for train and cabs was under $100.
  3. If it's hot and humid, consider hailing a cab between a couple of locations. It's fast, efficient, reasonably priced, and saves you from getting tired and grumpy! When your port time is limited, you want to make the most of it. Not sure which 3 locations you've chosen but we started at SanPietro for the Vatican then worked our way towards the Colosseum. We hailed cabs twice during our walk; Trevi Fountain to the Colosseum and the Colosseum to Ostiense Station. We purchased RT tickets for Ostiense, knowing that we could disembark early( SPietro). We thought Ostiense would be easier to negotiate than Termini for the return trip. Worked out great! Have a great trip !
  4. The only issue could be crossing the Grand Canal if you can't easily manage your luggage over the bridge. The Calatrava Bridge is quite large; the steps are shallow but there are lots of them. If you can't manage steps, take a bus or cab to Mestre on the mainland ( 5 minutes from P Roma). Most trains from Venice stop in Mestre anyway.
  5. Reading current trip reports will be very helpful. Any CruiseLine, any ship that has similar port stops as your itinerary. They usually are quite detailed with lots of info about excursions and vendors. Also, look at the Roll Call for your sailing. You'll probably find fellow pax who are trying to find a few people to fill up private excursions they are organizing. And look at other Roll Calls for your itinerary to get more ideas. I have Rick Steves book, Mediterranean by Cruise Port. It was helpful to learn about each port and the sights/activities available.
  6. You might want to post this question on the Italy forum. Lots of advice there about timing, transfers, airport, disembarking, etc.
  7. Look at the roll calls of any HAL ship leaving Trieste and you'll find discussions on transfers and testing. ie Oosterdam (June 13-25) has about 200 replies. Look at the last couple of pages to read questions and responses to your concerns
  8. You don't NEED a tour to see Pisa; take the train and visit at your own pace. I think the train ride was about 20 minutes; 3 or 4 departures every hour. We took the NCL shuttle to the train station, then a cab from the Pisa station to the entrance. Ticket info: Opera della Primaziale Pisana: sito ufficiale – A few words of advice before you buy your ticket (opapisa.it) We considered Pompeii for our Naples stop but decided that Amalfi was our priority. If you read past threads you'll find that Pompeii is also very easy to reach on your own by train. But perhaps consider hiring a guide for INSIDE the ruins to get the most of your visit. Enjoy your cruise !
  9. I'd be surprised if RCI didn't add another coach if they have a wait list ! Is the train not an option for you? The Padua option is definitely spendy. I had contacted the Ravenna Tourism Authority to get info on private transfers and Taxi service ( for a friend's elderly parents... they couldn't manage a train). The taxi company said 250-280E for the ride. Radiotaxi Ravenna (taxidiravenna.it) I didn't follow up on the car service but here's the company info if you want to pursue it. HIRE WITH DRIVER OF RAVENNA - Ravenna - Rhaama Service - About Us Please post with the info if you contact them. I'm sure others would like to know. Good luck !
  10. I used Aldo Limos for a day tour when we docked in Naples. Don't know if they do transfers but you can check. Ask this of any of the tour companies. Another thought .... ask your accomodation in Amalfi for a recommendation. In 2019, friends of min were staying in Amalfi and asked their B&B for a suggestion. The owner volunteered to pick them up at Naples airport, 100E. Good luck !
  11. I was reading a LIVE RCL trip report yesterday and the poster said the Port was running a shuttle from the train station to the port . $10pp. They didn't indicate the timing, but for such a short distance a cab might be cheaper and easier.
  12. if those are the only 2 options, I'd choose 2. But you might also consider hiring a private driver for the day, and plan your own itinerary. For instance I would consider a long lunch in Sorrento and the limoncelo tour a waste of my time. I'd rather have that time to GO TO Positano, grab a slice of pizza and wander around, rather than see it from an overlook. It was reading the details of the excursion that made me choose to go private. You can find 2 other couples from your Roll Call to join you and share the cost. I got carried away with our itinerary and added an extra hr, but geez, I'm there, so why not see and do what I can, right?
  13. The new shuttle drop off point is Varco Vespuci. On a map it doesn't look far from the previous shuttle stop at Largo Della Pace. But distances can be deceiving. Map of the Port | Port Mobility Civitavecchia The Epic doesn't leave Civi until 7pm so the OP has a pretty decent port time. We used a taxi to get around within Rome .... a couple of 10E cab rides was well worth the time they saved us.
  14. yes, even the regular train will send your lugage to the ship. There's a large tent outside the downtown train depot in Anchorage ... just tell those employees which ship your boarding and it will be in your cabin when you arrive.
  15. Review this listing of airport hotels. Don't know if there are grocery stores nearby or anything to look at. Venice Airport Hotels | Venice for Visitors (europeforvisitors.com) It might be better to stay in Mestre , which is the last town on the mainland before crossing the bridge into Venice. You would have easier access to shops, etc and most of the hotels are larger, more modernized (think elevator) and located across from the Mestre train depot. You can use the same web site to find Mestre hotels.
  16. One pr of shorts takes up no space and can easily be washed in the sink if you need to wear them a 2nd time. In my dozen or so visits to Alaska I've only worn shorts once .... in Fairbanks. But I pack them every time, as well as a pr of flip flops. As for warm weather clothing, wear layers ........a tshirt next to your skin, a sweatshirt/hoody next, then topped with a waterproof jacket. Carry a small daypack so you have a place to store your layers, as well as wallets, cameras, sunglasses etc
  17. The cruise-contracted train from the airport has a different schedule than the regular train from downtown Anchorage. The regular train leaves downtown at 6:45am and arrives Seward at 11:15. You should have time for 2-3 hrs at Exit Glacier. The shuttles leave Seward hourly on the half hour so you could catch the 12:30pm and be at the park by 1pm. Catch the 4pm return shuttle to be back by 4:30 since your onboard time will be 5. Be sure to make a SHUTTLE RESERVATION ! and take the taxi phone numbers for backup. 18. typically you need at least TWO nites in Denali in order to take a bus tour thru the park. However, due to a rockslide the park road is only open to about Milepost 40. Bear sightings typically start near Toklat at Mile 50 so your potential for wildlife sightings will be very limited when you can only travel on 40 miles of the park's 90 miles of roadway. Having said that, Sept is rutting season so the moose are active and are often seen within the first 5-6 miles of the park road. Another thought .... you don;t say when in Sept. The Denali buses stop running around Sept 10-15. Check the park web site for details. Bus Tours - Denali National Park & Preserve (U.S. National Park Service) (nps.gov) Talkeetna is a really small town/village. Kinda quirky, artsy fartsy shopping place People typically do Denali flight seeing from Talkeetna. Personally, Denali is the hightlight of my Alaska trips. I had a long RV trip planned with the intent of making multiple trips into the park to view wildlife. But Mile 40 is too limiting, so. I cancelled last yr and again this yr. Very disappointing.
  19. If you're taking the train, you can check your luggage at the tent outside the train station and it will be delivered directly to your CABIN. Just tell the porters which ship you're on and they'll take care of it. Luggage doesn't travel on the train; it is trucked to Seward.
  20. For 2022 they cut back the express route to only once per day in each direction. If you want more time in Rome, you may need to get an earlier start and ride the regular train with all the commuters. Civitavecchia Express: non-stop train for cruise passengers | Port Mobility Civitavecchia
  21. Perhaps these links will be useful. Starts with info on transportation, then the various beaches. Mykonos Transportation Guide - Getting To and Around the Island (mykonosbeachesguide.com) bus schedules and beach info MYKONOS BUSES - Updated 2022 Bus Schedule and Stations (mykonosbeachesguide.com)
  22. The bridge from PRoma to the train station is a biggie if you can't manage your luggage easily. Bridge photo: Top 11 Tourist Mistakes in Venice, Italy | Venice for Visitors (europeforvisitors.com) It might be easier to take a cab or the bus to Mestre to catch the train.. The Venice train will stop there anyway.
  23. The water taxis are waiting at the pier near the airport. After you collect your luggage you buy a voucher at their office, then walk to the pier. Detailed info in this link: Venice Water Taxis | Venice for Visitors (europeforvisitors.com)
  24. which port ? If Civi, go to the Italy forum where this question is answered frequently. As well as recommended transfer company. If Barcelona, people were already leaving the ship at 7 when we went for bfast. Had to be off by 9.
  25. I can only speak of my experience, in Sept 2019, so this probably won't help you. Plus we aren't early risers so had bfast around 7:30 then tried for train departures around 9/9:30am, (which helped us avoid the early morning rush) In Civi and Livorno, getting to the train station was a 2 part journey .... a port shuttle from the ship to the port entrance, then a city bus from there to the train station. In Civi the shuttles were running constantly so the bus filled up and we were on our way within 5 minutes or so. And when we arrived at the port entrance ( Largo della Pace), the city bus arrived within 5 minutes. The city bus ran every 15-20 minutes and cost 1E. We caught the 9:30 train to S Pietro. The Civi port guide has loads of info: Port of Civitavecchia: Cruise Passenger's Guide | Port Mobility Civitavecchia In Livorno we took advantage of NCL's shuttle direct to the train station from the ship. $25pp. Much easier than standing at the port entrance, not knowing when the city bus will arrive. If it's offered, I recommend it. In Cannes we were scheduled to be on the 8am tender #6 but there was a problem, and delay. Our tender left at 9. We missed the train to Monaco. I only saved 2 Dailys, so I've attached Cannes. But again its from sept '19. It was a fabulous cruise ....exhausting but fabulous! enjoy. 1411943177_Day-6Juncannes.pdf
