  1. This will be my first Princess cruise (seven night northbound Alaska), but I'm planning to bring either a charcoal business suit or a tan sport coat along for formal nights. Will this be in keeping with the spirit of the event? I've looked into renting a tux, but right now I'm thinking about putting the money elsewhere.

You will be fine with either.

  2. That does become a problem if those that arrive on time want to get to the show lounge to see a show. We've had people be consistently 15 minutes late each night during a cruise and when told what time dinner starts still didn't think it was a problem to them. The waiter does take orders & start serving but eventually the table slows down to let the latecomers catch up.

I agree 15 min is too long to wait. I would be constantly reminding them that I have to get to a show.

  3. We didn't tip extra, $13.90 per person per day is quite sufficient.

    ...

There was no discussion about tips what so ever.

I have never discussed tipping with my table mates. If I feel they deserve it, and they usually do, I just do it.

  4. A question or two for you Traditionalists.

If you are on a table for 8 by choice and there are only 4 or 6 present at the appointed time how long do they wait till they serve you? What do they do if someone who is missing arrives a little after that time?

If you have prepaid your gratuities do you Traditional diners still feel it necessary (is it expected) to tip again at the end of the cruise as you have had the same staff all the time? If so, what is the last night non-attendance like?

In my experience the server will take drink orders, hand out the menus and wait 5 minutes or so before taking food orders. I've never had anyone be seriously late, just 5 or 10 minutes and it wasn't a problem. The servers are good about getting everyone back on track.

As for tipping, yes, if I think they are good I will tip extra at the end of the cruise.

  5. It would be helpful, and educational, if the cabin card was always presented upon arrival for ATD. If the person has not already prearranged for a reservation they should then be offered a CHOICE of dining elsewhere or joining a separate line to wait for an available table AFTER those already in that ATD line have been seated. Those who do not have ATD and asked to stand aside can then also be handed a note explaining how the system works. This way they cannot say they were turned away but simply given choices.

I want to believe that our fellow cruisers are not intentionally being self-centered but simply do not understand why this sort of switching back and forth have repercussions and impacts the dining experience for others and that they may have absolutely no awareness of.

Can you imagine how that would delay entry into the ATD?

Maybe one of those scanners the airport uses for boarding passes would work. We can scan our cards as we enter the DR and the system can make a loud noise for those interlopers from TD.

Personally, I think the bigger problem is allowing reservations in AT.

  6. Good idea. I think I'll sign up for TD next cruise & go to AT dining every night. If enough people do this they'll be actually be forced to make people use the correct dining room, and not just on the first night or two. :D

That's a good point. I might actually be helping the AD cause.

  7. In my opinion, most of those claims are figments of the posters' imaginations. I've never, not once, headed to AD if I've missed my dining time, but since we TD diners are always accused as such I'm thinking about trying it and encouraging every other TD diner to do the same.

  8. The best way to do Princess Cays is to get there as early as possible, eat when they open & line up before 2 PM to return.

Waiting longer is a sure way to hit the long lines.

Thanks for the tip. Going in October for the first time.

  9. We did this several years ago. My dad had to buy an extra seat. Then was highly irritated when someone else rode in "his" extra seat

Bought an extra seat (as in paid double) or paid a surcharge? If he bought an extra seat no one should have sat there.

  10. Someone makes an off the wall comment about Princess charging to eat in the MDR and you start thinking of it as fact. FAKE NEWS people.

I don't think anyone here took it as fact.

  11. I've never felt the need of someone to serve me but the buffet offers the opportunity to select what I want visually & not by how it described on a piece of paper. I can take as much or as little as I please or sample a little of everything. Try that in the DR.

As fare as portion size goes, the amount of vegetables that are served in the DR is a joke. It's sufficient of a child.

And that's fine for you if that's what you like, I don't. Different tastes, that's all.

  12. Oh it's more than sufficient on most nights but there are certain meals in the DR that I would hate to miss if they were going to start a charge to attend.

I've never been a fan of buffets no matter how good they are. I don't like walking around searching for something decent to eat or walking around searching for somewhere to sit. They're good in a pinch, but not every night. Call me a snob, but on a cruise I want a quiet table and someone to wait on me.

  13. I do agree that the buffet food on the Regal & Royal surpasses that on other Princess buffets but if they even consider charging for the DR food, we'll be gone to another cruise line in a flash. I would hate to start over again (near the bottom) but that would do it for us and I suspect for many others as well. :(

It will certainly do it for me.

  14. Hi all,

My wife and I are planning on visiting the Crown Grill on our forthcoming cruise. We have never eaten there before.

I've been looking throught the threads and I can't help but notice the number of posts along the lines of "the lobster tails are small, but they bring me as many as I want" or "I love it - I can have as many filet mignons as I fancy".

Now, while not appearing to be greedy, and having never asked for more previously, I was wondering what the etiquette for such is. Do you ask for more up front, or half finish your meal (i.e. the lobster, steak) and pull a waiter/waitress over and ask for more, while giving them puppy-dog eyes?

Thanks (in anticipation of a gut busting meal)

    Martin

Most of the time you didn't have to ask or if you asked "which do you prefer" you'd get both. I understand that is now is thing of the past.

  15. I'm probably in the minority, but I'm looking forward to the new menu since I have gotten quite bored with the old one. As long as it's not New York/New Jersey Italian, I'll be happy. Apologies to New Yorkers.

  16. My son and DIL took a regular stroller and pushed it right onto the ship. They used it in small walkable ports, but used a front carrier if the were using transportation.
