setexenv Posted January 29, 2017 #1 Share Posted January 29, 2017 Would love to hear from past cruisers on AMA but specifically on Cello for this itinerary that we are about to put a deposit on, Arles to Lyon. Topics of interest are pros/cons of 3 night add ons for Barcelona and Paris, what expenses aren't included, weather experiences for mid-May, cabin type advice, and anything else of a general nature. First time river cruisers and we will be taking a transatlantic over and flying back. Thanking all in advance! caviargal Posted January 29, 2017 #2 Share Posted January 29, 2017 We did this itinerary on Amadagio in 2014 and it is among our very favorites. Loved the ports, the wine, the accessibility of the towns to where we were docked. AMA is our favorite line overall and, even though this cruise was on their oldest vessel at the time, it did not disappoint. Crew and staff were superb, as was our CM. Sent from my iPhone using Forums We have sailed on Ama twice, first time on the Ama Legro from Paris to Normandy and back in 2013. The second cruise was on the Ama Prima from Vilshofen to Budapest in 2015. Both cruises were great in all aspects. Splurge on a balcony cabin, in our opinion it's worth the extra cost. We've never been to Barcelona but Paris is magic. You could easily spend a week there and not see everything. Rare Host Jazzbeau Posted January 30, 2017 #5 Share Posted January 30, 2017 We did this AMA cruise in 2015, when it was called "Provence & Spain" in the opposite direction (Lyons to Arles). We were on AmaDagio, but she is identical to AmaCello (which we were on in 2013). See my signature for detailed reviews of both cruises. In short: AMA is a great river cruise line, AmaCello is a very classy river ship, and the Rhone itinerary is wonderful! The coach transfer from Arles to Barcelona is a long day that we didn't fancy, so we put this cruise in the middle of a DIY drive around France. It would be easy to DIY this as a Paris round trip using the TGV train service even without renting a car.
Rare texasstar Posted January 31, 2017 #6 Share Posted January 31, 2017 We were on this cruise in 2015. We flew in to Nice, stayed a few days, rented a car drove to the Luberon area and the Cote du Rhone area for about 5 days prior to the cruise. We loved the self-tour part as much as the cruise. We then departed from the Lyon airport. You will love this cruise and AMAWaterways.

Donray Posted February 1, 2017 #8 Share Posted February 1, 2017 We took last year with both Barcelona and Paris stays. We really enjoyed the optional Paris tour of the cabaret show.
Bowler Lady Posted June 21, 2018 #9 Share Posted June 21, 2018 I am so happy reading this. That the itinerary and AMA is wonderful. I am booking this cruise for next year in April. I am joining it with a land tour of Normandy for my DH. He wanted more than one day at Normandy that most all river cruises provide.
