conchyjoe Posted August 13, 2018 #1 Share Posted August 13, 2018 Hi, If anybody is booked on a cruise that calls at Yangon (Myanmar) this Fall or Spring next year, please could you advise the cost of the Silversea Land Excursion to see the temples at Bagan. We have booked a similar trip in 2019 that has 4 days in Yangon but are trying to decide whether it is worth arranging our own tour, or going with he ship's excursion. Unfortunately we are unable to see the cost online for the 2018 voyages without having a booking number. I really hate booking land excursions because you are already paying $800+ per night per person on the ship on the cruise and then pay another $$?? per night to travel ashore. But in Myanmar that side trip is an essential component and may be worth it. Thanks for any info.
CruisinPashmina Posted August 13, 2018 #2 Share Posted August 13, 2018 I hated to have to pay a large charge to take the land excursion, but it was absolutely critical. After lunch in Yangon, we flew to Mandalay, spent the night, toured the city, and flew to Bagan for another night and tour of the temples. Both hotels and restaurants were fabulous. The guides were excellent. Both evenings’ entertainment was colorful and fun. Sorry I can’t really remember the costs...this was about 9 years ago. What I do remember is that I have no regrets at all. Take a big, deep breath, and go!
Rare mysty Posted August 13, 2018 #3 Share Posted August 13, 2018 We did an SS land voyage in 2016. It was 1.5 days/1 night. Departed from Yangon and returned to Yangon. It was $1,099 USD per person. We loved it and we were very happy that we saw it before the latest earthquake. The price did not show up on our MySilversea Activities. We had to book it via our travel agent. Rare mysty Posted August 13, 2018 #4 Share Posted August 13, 2018 I should mention that the price above included 2 fares for the hot air balloon ride. Unfortunately it was too windy for the balloons. Our money for the ride was refunded. Sorry, I don't remember the amount for the rides.
dszrew Posted August 13, 2018 #5 Share Posted August 13, 2018 we were quoted $899 per person for the overnight Bagan trip just this March. I eventually decided what I wanted to do was spend more time there someday (1 night was not enough). Instead we spent time in Bago and Yangon and maybe someday we'll make it back. There are some interesting river cruises that include Mandalay and Bagan and the surrounding countryside.
conchyjoe Posted August 14, 2018 Author #6 Share Posted August 14, 2018 Many thanks for all your feedback. $1000 for the tour seems very reasonable, pretty much the same as I could arrange on my own.

rojaan19 Posted August 15, 2018 #9 Share Posted August 15, 2018 We did a river cruise in Burma a couple of years ago, got off the boat in Bagan and had a couple of days there. If you can do the hot air balloon trip - IT IS FANTASTIC !!!
CruisinPashmina Posted August 15, 2018 #10 Share Posted August 15, 2018 Since we had two destinations with three flights and two hotel nights, our expenses were almost 2x those quoted above...but still totally worth it. Mysty, I’m so sorry you had to miss the balloon ride over the Bagan temples. I don’t recall if we were offered this adventure, but it would be an amazing way to view the huge scene from above. Rare mysty Posted August 15, 2018 #11 Share Posted August 15, 2018 Thanks for the sympathy CruisinPashmina! I worked very hard to convince Myster to give it a go as he is not a fan of heights. I was able to work some magic and then we were actually both disappointed that it was cancelled. Oh well... we did enjoy the wonder from ground level. :)
Joolsverne Posted August 15, 2018 #12 Share Posted August 15, 2018 Pagan is extraordinary, don’t miss it. Tour Mandalay (actually based in Yangon) will organize it all for you.
JBSHYQ Posted August 24, 2018 #13 Share Posted August 24, 2018 Many thanks for all your feedback. $1000 for the tour seems very reasonable, pretty much the same as I could arrange on my own. We did Myanmar in 2016 with SS. It was amazing and well worth it. A word of warning, we took the land based tour with the ship and it was the best tour. The warning is because we were supposed to leave the ship at around 6.30 am in the morning, but we had difficulty getting docked and eventually left the ship around an hour late (maybe even more, my memory is fading) we had a police escort for the coach to the airport to move the traffic jams along (not safety from what we saw) and the plane was delayed for us to fly to Bagan! We commented at the time that had we done a private tour I doubt that they would have been so accommodating, but with more than half of the plan's passengers running very late they stopped for us. We had a magnificent hotel in Bagan the days were full and exciting, and on the way back to the ship in the second day we did a trip to the Swedaggon pagodas at night, which was stunning. The next day we had a special trip around Yangon for all of the overland passengers which included afternoon tea at the Strand hotel. The value for money was immense and I can't thank the tour crew enough for looking after us so well. From memory the cost was around $750 each and was well worth it!
