Does Hong Kong have good deals on jewelry?

Anyone purchased diamond jewelry in Hong Kong? Is it less expensive and do you recommend a place? I will be in other SE Asian ports if there is a better location. I have found good deals at Caribbean ports before and hope this will be similar. Advice appreciated. Thanks.

Lots of fake product. Lot of overpriced jewelry passed on as something that it is not. You need to be very careful. The challenge is that we do not have the knowledge to know a good stone from a mediocre one or 18/21K from 9or14K.. It is the same as buying carpets in Turkey. Always a challenge when the seller is an expert and the buyer lacks the requisite knowledge.

Question for the OP is what specific lines of jewelry products are you looking to buy, whether in HK or Vietnam or elsewhere in SE Asia ?

As a general rule, Hong Kongers and Chinese typically buy 24k gold items, whether it's bracelets, rings, necklaces or earrings ... mounted with diamonds and/or other precious gemstones, and/or jade, pearls, etc. Luxury watches are also popular, i.e. Rolex -

There are established chain store names like Chow Tai Fook, Luk Fook, Lukfook Jewellery, Chow Sang Sang Jewellery, etc. with retail store locations everywhere, including Central on the island side and TST & Nathan Road area. For expensive purchases, you want to make sure a detailed receipt is issued, accompanied by a certified appraisal & certificate of authenticity to backup its retail value, etc. There are no retail sales tax so everywhere sold is tax & duty-free in HK, but, you might be subject to a surcharge for using a credit card for purchase - returning/going home ... custom & excise duties are the purchaser's responsibilities and in declaring them to the customs officer.

With pearls, jade and other gemstones, there are natural ones and then there are artificial ones who can easily fool the naked & untrained ones or without the use of proper inspection tools and procedures ... let the buyer beware and know the retail prices commonly charged.

Then, matters of international warranties and after-sales service, return & free-exchange/buy-back policies, etc.

What you find and buy are often one of a kind with unique workmanship ... not possibly found in the Caribbean unless it's exported, or the items are generic & common. It is not easy to generalize and offer a "blanket" response on the purchase being less expensive compared to ???

IMO, it's not something you should rush in a hurry on a port stop ... should take time to shop & look around, check prices and bargain shop - some places do while others won't negotiate ... discount for all cash prices with full payment.

I wouldn't say Hong Kong is a good place for "deals." However, it does have a lot of high-end items, and range, and there are a lot of sellers so competition can play into it, and you do have good choices. But a lot of buyers too.

It's a good place to buy if looking for good quality and range, but not just because you got a worldwide bargain.
