Is there a new itineray that you would like to see Viking create?

I would love it if Viking would include more itineraries that fit in the traditional "school year" schedule. I travel with my daughter who is a teacher and we are running out of itineraries (ocean and river) that work for us. We are currently researching for a possible trip during the next winter break and have just about exhausted the Viking offerings. :(

  • 4 weeks later...

Living in the UK means that we've cruised most places in Europe many times. We now find that in recent years many ports have become overcrowded with massive ships, so that even if you're sailing on a lovely Viking ship, the port experience can be quite unpleasant.

So, my choice of itinerary will be different... I would like Viking to sail from the U.K. down to the Mediterranean (and back) calling only at small ports that the mega-ships can't get into!

I must add that I love sea days best of all and would happily take a cruise to 'nowhere'.

My personal wish list would be a Western Mediterranean itinerary to include: Catania, Sicily (for Taormina) ,Trapani, Sicily ( for Erice), and Valetta, Malta. Also, Palma de Mallorca. I am open to suggestions on how to fill in the trip. I wouldn't mind a stop in Naples (to see Pompeii), so maybe start in Rome? Would like to get back to Valencia, so maybe end in Barcelona?

How about Rome to Naples to Catania to Trapani to Palma de Mallorca to Valencia to Barcelona? Perhaps my ideal trip should be ten days long.Can anyone help finish my plan?

Does anyone wish to share their imaginary dream Viking cruise?

Viking, are you listening? Any hints about what might be on the drawing board?

Actually, when the Viking Star 21st December cruise on the Southern Med recently cancelled its stops in Algiers and Tunis (La Goulette), its amended schedule is very close to your ideal cruise:

VIKING STAR 21st DEC 2017 ORIGINAL ROUTE;

Rome/Civitavecchia-->Trapani --->Port Goulette (Tunis)---->Cagliari---->Algiers ----> Valencia ---> Barcelona.

VIKING STAR 21st DEC 2017 AMENDED ROUTING

Rome/Civitavecchia-->Naples --->Trapani --->Cagliari---> Palma de Mallorca ---> Valencia ---> Barcelona. The only stop it is missing compared to your "wished for" idea cruise route is Catania, and granted, this cruise is only 7 nights long, not 10 nights.

But still, isn't the similarity just curious????!!!!

For us, we would like Viking to have a cruise from US West Coast to Hawaii , visiting a couple of US cities/ports as well as the main stops in the Hawaiian islands.

San Francisco (overnight)---> Nawiliwili---> Honolulu (overnight)--->Lahaina---->Kona----> Hilo---> Seattle---> Portland---> San Francisco

Another is an Asian cruise:

Phuket--> Penang ---> Singapore (overnight)---> Bangkok (overnight)--->PhuMy (HCM City)--->Nha Trang--> Halong Bay---> Hong Kong (overnight)---> Shanghai---> Nagasaki--> Osaka--->Tokyo (overnight).

I did see that adjustment to this cruise! This current change won't help us as we have our 2018 trip already booked (Trade Routes of the Middle Ages for Oct.). This itinerary is not scheduled yet for 2019 in either the original format or the new one. I will certainly be keeping an eye out, and may well pounce on it if the altered itinerary shows up for 2019. Thanks for providing the notice.

There are Asia cruises available with Viking for 2019, but I think you would have to do three of them, back-to-back-to-back to cover all the stops on your wish list!

We've done the Around the Horn twice, would consider a third if they can do intensive stops along the Chilean coast. Patagonia is a wonderful place. Ushuaia Chili is an Overnight wish. What a beautiful location. BA also is a wonderful stop, the Tango. Overnight in BA is a wow. New Zealand a 15 day circle the island. No one does that. Mediterranean is so covered. Except the Holy Lands. As in, Egypt, Israel , Jordan (ok ok), Turkey and Greece. Do the off Island areas in the Eastern Med. Everyone has Santorini, Rhodes, Mykonos.

DO off islands in the Eastern Med. Viking Ocean is a prime vendor with small ships who could handle off area locations. Small gets you into more off beat location. Northern EU do St Petersburg for 3 nights, why not? NY to Caribbean? Why not? Add a few days for back and forth. Maybe a few out of Port Canaveral? Mid Florida for many is a great place to start.

Africa? Hmmm, never did think a cruise to however that would be interesting. Esp an around the globe tour.

Sorry for the rambling,, just may places,

I would love to see VO do the Amazon. We've done the Peruvian section but want to do the Manaus portion.

VO is already sailing up the Amazon. They are Currently on their first voyage towards the Amazon heading to Manaus round trip out of San Juan.

There are three upcoming trips in 2018....February originates in MIA concluding in San Juan, and both November & December are round trip out of San Juan....great itineraries- we are booked on the November trip.

Take a look at the website and you will see the details.

Basically: to start doing what other cruise lines don't.

To make a step from declarations to practice.

I would love to see Viking ships do 2-day stops in the Mediterranean ports.

Same about the Caribbean.

I would love to step on the Viking "private island".

So far other cruise lines do what Viking does - just without a mantra about " a doorway to cultural insight and personal enrichment, etc."

With only a single ocean cruise (with Viking) on my resume, I do not know about other cruise lines. Is it common to have both a resident historian and guest lecturers onboard providing daily presentations? The focus on culture and history, and the absence of casinos and silly contests are what drew us to Viking in the first place. I thought they did put their declarations into practice on our Mediterranean cruise.

Even on their Caribbean cruises, most of the shore excursions are focused on the history and culture of the ports. Very few beach excursions are offered. I would be quite surprised if Viking ever had a plan to develop a "private island" for their guests (assuming you meant that in the literal sense?).

Some of Viking's Mediterranean itineraries do have two day stays, but so far it is limited, and seems to only be for the larger cities like Florence and Rome. As the line expands, I can imagine that would be very appealing.

I noticed your post in another thread that seemed to take issue with Viking's focus on providing the "thinking man's cruise". Not everyone wants the same thing from a vacation. Learning more about other people and cultures is why I travel, and that is fun for me. Other people travel to relax, some to shop, some to gamble, and some to "party". Viking, as a new line, doesn't always get everything right. However, I do not find their tone condescending. Viking was exactly what I was looking for in a cruise line.

With Viking Oceans now going to have 10 ships, could we please have one ship dedicated to a full season in Australia/New Zealand. A full circle Australian tour would be good, plus extra trips to Asia, and also trips from New Zealand to the Pacific Islands would also be good.
