Crew Member Arrested for Child Porn

This is from the Halifax newspaper. Parents, here's proof that you cannot be too careful of your children on cruise ships. People over on the Carnival board are wondering if this guy was taking photos of kids on the ship? That's scary, imho.

Cruise worker faces child porn charge

An Indonesian crewman on a cruise ship that visited Halifax this week faces charges after customs officers allegedly found images of child pornography on his computer.

Hendri Dharmawan, 29, an employee on the Carnival Triumph, was arrested Tuesday while the ship was docked at Pier 22 on the Halifax waterfront.

He was arraigned in Halifax provincial court Wednesday on a Customs Act charge of smuggling child pornography into the country.

On Friday, investigators added a Criminal Code charge of possession of child pornography.

Mr. Dharmawan will remain in custody at the Central Nova Scotia Correctional Facility in Dartmouth until his next court appearance Sept. 11.

I think it's very likely - with the number of passengers that modern cruise ships hold - that there are people on pretty much every cruise that 'like' children in 'less than pure' ways... I have no doubt that they not only surreptitiously take pictures of the children on board, but also peruse (and perhaps even purchase from) the ship's photos for images of kids.

I don't consider myself paranoid or overprotective, just aware of what's out there. People with these sorts of issues come from all walks of life, including socioeconomic classes that can afford to cruise. Can you imagine a more appealing vacation for someone like this? I mean, sure, Disney parks offer plenty of 'eye candy' for them, but a single adult at Disneyworld is more likely to 'look suspicious' than one on a cruise ship - and that photo centre with hundreds of pictures of kids wearing everything from bathing suits to formal wear has to be particularly interesting.

That being said, I also think 'they're' everywhere else. It's the way of the world - and always has been, really; we're just more aware of it now. It's one of the reasons that this board is so valuable - since I've been a member there have been numerous threads where parents have shared their ideas and experiences on family rules and practices that keep kids safe®. I wish it wasn't necessary, but I'm glad it's here. :)

Absolutely correct! This is true of both the passengers and as we see the crew itself.

Wow, I never thought of someone else buying the pictures. I never gather the pictures not purchased to be discarded...I think I will now.
