Can I really be sure I won't get motion sickness even if I am prepared?

Hello,

If you are prone to sea sickness an example being, sick in the backseat of a car or

can't go on any carnival rides at the fair. Then I would get a script from your doctor for the patch. I am just that way and was so scared on our first cruise. I put the patch on 2 hours before we sail and have used it for 12 cruises and never sick. I drink beer and wine while on it and my only symptom is blurry vision.

Years ago before our 12 cruises I took a small boat out of Palm Beach that just went out for 48 hours to gamble and was sick the whole time and it was calm!! Once you start to feel bad you cannot shake it so start whatever you choose to take before you sail!

You are going to love cruiseing we do!!

Cantwait is right! Get the sea bands and wear them. I keep mine on almost 24/7. I discovered these a couple years ago and will never cruise without them again. Sometimes I think they look a little silly but I don't care. They help!!! If I don't wear them, I always get sick at night. Hope they help you as much as they have helped me. :D

Yup! Same here. I wear them the whole trip. And I found these, so I won't feel so strange wearing them on elegant nights. ;)

I believe if you think you will be sick you might talk yourself into that hole .....mind over matter

.The Miracle is a BIG ship that handles itself well .My advice to you is IF you feel queazy DO NOT WAIT take something right away or you will be sick Sometimes half a tablet is enough

I think if you are nervous you will feel it more

SO RELAX you are on VACATION

Enjoy be prepared and DO NOT THINK ABOUT IT

My hubby is very prone to seasickness ...he could not believe what a smooth ride we had

He was NEVER sick

Bon Voyage

Oh course there's no way to be sure you won't get sick.

After a lifetime of motion sickness problems, and feeling quesy (never actually puked and never missed a meal :p ) on 5 cruises, I added Ginger before my Miracle 12/07 cruise and had no problems on that cruise or on Glory, Fascination or Victory.

But last weekend, I did the Cruise to Nowhere on Triumph out of Norfolk. I think part of it was that I was in the casino Sunday morning (gasp!) and was surrounded by chain smokers, and the ship was really rocking.

I went down to the cabin and quickly took 1/2 of the generic bonine they provide (I had some from last cruise; I always get a few packets when I board). I put on my hoodie and took my beach towel and went up to the Lido deck and sat out in the brisk air (it was in the upper 50s) and felt better within an hour or so. I was fine by dinner time.

But, no, there are no guarantees. It doesn't hurt to convince yourself that you will NOT get sick, though. It sure sounds like you're prepared. Good luck!

And 4 boxes of Bonine!

CK

Skip the Bonine (or any other name brand of meclizine) ... go straight to your pharmacy counter & they will give you a bottle of 100 tabs for $4 - 6 dollars.

Just make sure you read the label on the Bonine because generic stuff from your pharmacist won't have instructions. Bonus to be had .... your pharmacist knows your family's prescriptions & can tell you what kind of interactions you should look out for while on the meclizine!

I so agree some of it's in your mind and DON"T STARE AT THE HORIZON for long periods of time

Funny, my Dad was in the navy and I remember him telling me that staring at the horizon helped him if he started to feel seasick. If I am a passenger in a car, I know it helps me to look out the window rather than read a book - seeing where the car is going helps me. But each to their own. I know when the ship is really rocking, I will be feeling sick no matter what I have brought. I get motion sick easier than many people do though, at least when the water isn't really rough I am ok.

Do not wear the patch and take other drugs. They will make you extremely ill. Ginger would probably be okay with patch as it is natural. I had patches and thought it was wearing off so I took some sea sick pills and got really ill. Missed dinner on last night. Now I only wear patches as I tend to get extremely ill in moderately choppy seas. I have never had a problem with them.

One other small tip is to not let yourself get really hungry (I know that sounds crazy on a ship full of food). I don't get seasick generally, but have been a tiny bit queasy first thing in the morning in rough seas until I eat breakfast, then all is well. Another suggestion I've heard is to eat green apples and drink ginger ale if you don't have really bad seasick problems.

Can't help you with the motion sickness (I'm pretty sure I'm the only person who hopes for a lot of ship movement when I'm cruising...makes me sleep like a baby!), but re: the patch, make sure you do NOT touch your eyes after touching the patch and wash your hands immediately after touching it (even if touching it just to make sure it's still there).

We were on the Miracle last May and my sister put her contacts in and her vision was all blurry in one eye. She thought it was a bad contact so she opened a new pack of contacts and her vision was still blurry. She took those out and put her glasses on and it was a bit better, but her vision was still very blurry. Needless to say, we were in Nassau and she was VERY freaked out. Later that day, we determined that she touched her patch unintentionally and then rubbed her eye (her vision restored fully that night).

Anytime you touch that patch, wash your hands immediately.

OP,

If you are going to use the patch, you need to put it on BEFORE you get seasick as it won't do any good if you are already sick. Also, I have used the patch, but even without touching my eyes as the previous poster mentions, it affects my vision. I can't read up close and within a few days, I need longer arms. In addition, I have a very dry mouth and no matter what I drink, I am still dry.

I have been seasick a few times, and now I use Meclazine and also have Altoid ginger tablets and ginger capsules. I don't think there is anything worse than feeling seasick and there is no guarantee that you will or will not get sick, but I think you are well prepared. Just don't do everything at once.

Enjoy!

So planning to go at end of November on Miracle for a Southern Cruise and planning to bring the patch (only use in case I really need it...read about possible effects), Bonine, ginger tablets, Gingerale. So if I have all this and start taking ginger ahead of time... can I be pretty sure I will not get motion sick or are there others out there that do all of this and end up getting motion sickness? Have I forgot anything? I did get sick on a dinner cruise boat just off of Mauai. It was a small boat of course.

A friend of mine just got back from a cruise out of Ft. Lauderdale and I don't know what one as I just talked to their friend but they said that they told them they were sick the whole time and it was rough seas. Anyways...thus my questioning of my own vacation.

So looking forward to the trip though!

There is no guarantee - but all of the meds you plan to take should help.

I have used the ginger style bonine tablets that are supposed to be a non-drowsy formula. They seem to work well until the ship is really rockin'!

If you are prone to seasickness all you can do is be prepared.

I have only had one partially bad day and that was sailing near a tropical storm - it was the only only bad 8 hour stretch I have ever had on a cruise ship.

Best of luck, a positive attitude, lots of meds and smooth seas!!!!!

The Southern cruises are ussually calmer but you never know. Don't worry about being sick. If you think too much about getting sick you can make yourself sick. Unless it is really rough most people do not get sick on these big ships.

Heck I get car sick, get sick in small boats while fishing, and can't even go on a carnival ride without getting sick. But do not get sea sick on cruise ships and don't take any pills.

You can take Bonine and Ginger -- don't know about mixing anything else in there.

No guarantees like everyone else said. I wanted to share a funny quote though. Before my first cruise, I was soooo sure I'd get seasick. I asked everyone I knew if they had any advice. Every SINGLE person told me "oh you won't get sick. those cruise ships are huge" and I would always reply "well someone has to be getting sick on these cruises if there is so much talk about seasickness and remedies" I get sick on long car trips, rides, and trains.

all that being said, I brought ginger (started taking 2 days before the cruise 1 pill a day. then 2-3 pills during cruise. I also had "Ginger Trips' which is a chewable ginger tablet....tastes kinda gross, but I took one a few times and felt better very soon), seabands (just in case), green apples (wasn't sure if they were on board-- they were. don't waste space packing!), bonine (just in case), and my final backup plan was going to be to go to the infirmary an get a shot... of what I don't know, but I read on the boards that they could give you something and it would probably make you sleep for a day or so, but you would be better.

I only used my ginger! We had "rough seas" one day too and many other passengers were ill. During the rough seas, I put the seabands on just to see what happened and noticed no change. Definitely try them (esp. since you own them already). Maybe I didn't give them enough chance?

Next cruise, I am plannning to take ginger again. I'll bring bonine and the seabands again too. Hope I don't have to use them, but I'm still not convinced I won't get sick!

Hi CK, I think the ginger is the way to go really because it's natural and if you like to drink at all it won't interact with that.

One thing I always do is get a script (I still have some on hand) for Zofran in case you do get nauseated. It's an after the fact thing but it will help you if you do get sick even after all the preventatives.

Zofran doesn't have the narcotic effect some of the other antinausea pills do, I've not had to use it yet but I have it "just in case"

We have sailed when the seas are rough and it just makes me sleepy. I'm one of the lucky ones that just think the rocking is so relaxing and makes my sleep so much better. But my first time I was SURE I'd be seasick and hate it.

Have an awesome trip!!

I have that same symptom without the patch:confused: :)

My wife was really concerned before the cruise last year, but we had no issues. We had some bonine and the sea bands, and never used them.

I have had terrible problems with motion sickness on land. I had to be taken to the infirmary after riding the Ninja at Six Flags. ( I was talked into it by my 8 year old.) I cannot ride in the back seat of a car and sometimes I must drive to stop my queazy stomach. I have never been sick on a cruise. I started out with the patch but on the second day of my first cruise found it missing late in the day I have never used anything since. We have been in some rough seas where the show had to be cancelled because the dancers would be hurt and barf bags were taped by the elevators. It is my experience that just because you are bothered on land you just might not be bothered at sea.
