cobbmom123 Posted November 1, 2009 #1 Share Posted November 1, 2009 Anybody ever use walkie talkies to communicate on the ship? Hubby and I will often be headed different directions and were wondering if we could stay in touch by walkie talkie?

Ashland Posted November 1, 2009 #4 Share Posted November 1, 2009 Walkie talkies on ship seem to pick up at lot of static...and pretty annoying listening to someone yelling into one of them..."CAN YOU HEAR ME" might be worth it to rent ship phones if you have kids...but for two adults....arrange to meet up at certain times... ;).... cb at sea Posted November 1, 2009 #7 Share Posted November 1, 2009 My hubbby and I do the same, as far as "going our separate ways", and we always manage to find each other! The ship's public areas aren't as huge as you may think. Hubby knows I'll either be at the pool, the cabin or casino, for the most part. I know he'll be in the casino, sports bar, pool or WJ....even tho we may miss each other at one spot, for a moment, we know we'll find each other before dinner! We will leave a note in the cabin if we really change it up, and go somewhere unexpected..... You will not be eternally separated!!!!!
cruiseguy1016 Posted November 1, 2009 #8 Share Posted November 1, 2009 I am unfamiliar with this. How much does it run (money wise) and how does it work? The dect phones are cordless phones that work on the ship's phone system. They will not work on shore. They can be rented at guest relations. I believe they are $25 for the week. Walkie-talkies are sporadic. If you both are on the same deck, they'll work great. If you have several decks (lots of metal) between you, the won't be very useful. bubbadog Posted November 1, 2009 #9 Share Posted November 1, 2009 You should get a pair that has a 25 mile range, those seem to work better;)
Tony20 Posted November 1, 2009 #10 Share Posted November 1, 2009 Just got off the Freedom today (sad) and we used walkie talkies for the first time. They were FANTASTIC! We used vibrate mode and kept the volume down to normal conversation level, but it saved us a ton of time. Didn't have to wait for people, could change plans midstream etc. We even went to Labadee and told everyone where our nice seat under the palm tree was. They arrived later and it was super convenient. I watched baseball at night and when the walkie vibrated, I'd just step away and talk to my family. It was very cool. We had no static problems whatsoever and could talk anywhere on the ship at low power level. We used Midland GXT1000.
wraithe Posted November 2, 2009 #11 Share Posted November 2, 2009 http://boards.cruisecritic.com/showthread.php?t=1068665 http://boards.cruisecritic.com/showthread.php?t=21479 http://boards.cruisecritic.com/showthread.php?t=1012359 http://boards.cruisecritic.com/showthread.php?t=969223 There are just 4 recent threads about walkie talkies that a search turned up. Pretty much all the same things already said here, don't use them, they suck, they work great, use the text or vibrate feature, don't shout, turn them down, ... ad nauseum. The only thing I'll add, don't use them onshore in foreign ports, GMRS radios are not even legal to use in the US without a license, much less on foreign soil. You risk a lot, but the worst part is that in some countries, you could actually interfere with emergency services.
