I guess it kind of depends on what you are looking for. Auckland is not a big city by European or American standards, well, the city centre isn't - as whole Auckland sprawls for miles and miles.

 

The two key areas are Queen Street (shopping) and the Viaduct Harbour (views) - but you can easily get the best of both worlds as the two are not more than half a mile distant.

 

For great views of the harbour and very easy access to Queen Street look at the Hilton (Princess Wharf) or the Copthorne. If you really want to be in the heart of the viaduct area, with its multi-million dollar boats etc. look at the Westin Lighter Quay.

Thanks for the street identification. I am going to be in Auckland in Dec. 2010 for one night. My travel buddy and I enjoy small boutique hotels, not necessarily high dollar but nice and semi-quirky. Any suggestions?

My family stayed at the hotel in the Sky City casino after our cruise, and the location, accommodation, food choices and tower above were all great. The casino itself was of no interest to us, however the hotel entrance etc is separate.

The Quadrant is semi-quirky, though I wouldn't call it small and boutique. You might want to check a review of it to see if that's the sort of thing you're thinking of.

You cant go wrong with Sky City .

Lots of eateries nearby.

 

The other one we have recommended is the Copthorne Waterfront.

Excellent location if you are cruising.

You can wheel your bags over.

Its not flash and trendy,

but very comfortable and in the best location,

as all the "Viaduct" cafes and bars are just around the corner.

Another good one to consider. The Quadrant is in a great location, close to the university and right beside the park - a very historical part of Auckland, yet still very handy for the shops of Queen Street and various bars, restaurants etc.

We are in Auckland pre cruise in January and are looking at a two bedroom suite at Quay West in Albert St. Any clues on location and is it possible to walk to embarkation? Thanks.

Very handy location.

1 block to walk to ship, so as long as you have wheels on your luggage, should be OK.
