cruisecrazy02 Posted November 16, 2009 #1 Share Posted November 16, 2009 My husband and I are cruising on the Miracle Southern Carribean on Feb 24 to March 4 2010. We arrive in port at 8:00am and we have booked a flight at 11:00am out of Fort Lauderdale. Does that give us enough time? On our last cruisein 2008 on the Pride (Mexican Riveria) without early debarkation or anything, we were off the boat and to the airport in LA by 9:30am. I guess I am assuming that being so close to the aiport in Fort Lauderdale, it shouldn't be a problem?
cardinalfan Posted November 16, 2009 #2 Share Posted November 16, 2009 Assuming no problems with customs and that you do self assist, you will make it easily.
cruisecrazy02 Posted November 16, 2009 Author #3 Share Posted November 16, 2009 Thanks, we are Canadian so customs isn't an issue, because they know we are crossing the Canadian Border later.
dbrucern Posted November 16, 2009 #4 Share Posted November 16, 2009 We wished we had booked an earlier flight when we returned from the Freedom instead of sitting at the airport for hours. We did not do self-assist and arrived at the airport at 9am
cuppycakemom Posted November 16, 2009 #5 Share Posted November 16, 2009 I'll be the one who says, maybe.... It depends on which airline you're flying...and if you have to check luggage, and I would check to see how many ships are returning that day into FLL and MIA. And, I would definately do self assist, but that's me. When we came back into MIA on our last cruise, we were flying out of FLL, and I couldn't believe the lines at the airport. NO JOKE. They were OUT THE DOOR and DOWN THE SIDEWALK, just to check in to some of the airlines. Security was horrendous. It took us almost two hours to get through it all and to our gate. Now, I admit, we did not do self assist, and we had to add travel time from MIA, but....my parents did get off early, and said that even when they arrived, which was before 9:30, it took them all of over an hour to get through all the muck. Chances are high that you'll be alright, but it could also be close....depends on so much.
KenMo Posted November 16, 2009 #6 Share Posted November 16, 2009 cuppycakemom is correct. I was at FLL the same day she was. It was horrendous.....I had never seen it like that! I think it was at least two hours before our luggage was checked and we arrived at the terminal. It's likely you'll make it. But it would be to close for comfort for me. deepnite10 Posted November 16, 2009 #7 Share Posted November 16, 2009 i would say you could make it..IF THERE ARE NO PROBLEMS..:) there s been alot of problems written about..so research them and see if you fall into any of those circumstances..and can you live with the consequences if you don t make the flight.. Muumuu Posted November 16, 2009 #8 Share Posted November 16, 2009 Daughter and I flew into Ft Laud for our 8 day southern cruise on the Miracle. We had an 1130 return flight scheduled. Did self off the ship, caught a cab right there, 5 min and we were in the airport. Airport and port are beside each other. Anyway we were in the airport by 8 and they offered us the 9 flight. Seems the 1130 was overbooked. We took it gladly and were home before out scheduled flight left FL. You very well may have the same luck. Self disembark was really the main element to our earlier flight.
steveNcindy Posted November 16, 2009 #9 Share Posted November 16, 2009 Our return flight is booked for 11am after our return to FLL on the Miracle Feb 16 -will let you know how it works out. Given that it is a Thurs when you return the airport may not be the zoo it is on a Sat or Sun with more ships returning and disembarking 1000's of passengers each
Wendy The Wanderer Posted November 16, 2009 #10 Share Posted November 16, 2009 Thanks, we are Canadian so customs isn't an issue, because they know we are crossing the Canadian Border later. I think this poster meant customs clearance on the ship. This could delay disembarkation. You are cutting it close, but chances are good, if the check-in isn't a zoo. Are you flying Air Canada? Sometimes that checkin is very crowded. Sometimes not. You could probably expedite this somewhat by printing your boarding passes the night before on the ship, or having them sent to your b lackberry/iphone if you have one, and printing is not an option. Air Canada has an app for this. That way you just go straight to dump your luggage then on to the security line (which can also be very long.) cruisecrazy02 Posted November 16, 2009 Author #11 Share Posted November 16, 2009 Thanks so much everyone! It truly depends on so many variables and I appreciate all of your comments. steveNcindy, I will anxious to hear how your arrangements go. last night, when I was thinking about our travel plans, etc i guess i had a moment of panic of it not being enough time, not to mention we are flying in to Detroit to visit my parents in Windsor, ON so the route home for us is very different to the flights we are taking to get to FLL. Thanks again!
burm Posted November 17, 2009 #12 Share Posted November 17, 2009 We had originally booked a 1:30 PM flight out of Miami but NWA rescheduled it to 11:30 AM. Oceania strongly recommended that I switch to a later flight even though they say that most passengers will have disembarked by 9:00 AM. I did not want to stress over this so changed and will now have a looooooong wait.
SarahQ Posted November 19, 2009 #13 Share Posted November 19, 2009 cruisecrazy02 - fancy seeing you here ;) We're in the same boat - literally - not only are we on the same cruise, but we also have a flight on Southwest to Buffalo departing at 11am. The 11am flight was the only direct flight available for us, so I took it - my reasoning was that we are arriving back on a Thursday, which I think would make a big difference to lines at the airport etc. If it were a Saturday/Sunday with multiple ships coming in, I would have thought twice about it for sure, but since its mid-week basically, I'm sure we'll be fine :)
GTO-Girl Posted November 19, 2009 #14 Share Posted November 19, 2009 Just a note.....everyone sailing out of FLL needs to check & see if it's the same day the Oasis is there because that will add about 6,500 more people to the mix. If you have a number of ships in that day PLUS the Oasis you could be looking at some major delays......

steveNcindy Posted February 16, 2010 #16 Share Posted February 16, 2010 steveNcindy, I will anxious to hear how your arrangements go. Not sure if you are still following this but you should be fine. We just returned today and it was smooth. We didn't do self debark as we had too much luggage but we were in debark group 2. They started self debark right at 7:30, took the shore excursion group out at 8:15 and called our number at around 8:20. We found our luggage, grabbed a cab and were at the airport at 8:50. I printed the boarding passes and paid the luggage fees on line from the ship (was able to score exit row seats as well which was nice for the legroom). There always what ifs but you should be at the airport waiting by 9 or 9:30. Have a great cruise and if you happen to be in the casino, please say hi to Teodoro from Steve and Cindy. cruisecrazy02 Posted February 17, 2010 Author #17 Share Posted February 17, 2010 Thanks Steve and Cindy. When we got off our mexican riveria cruise two years ago we did self-assist and it was great for getting off the ship and we were really early for our flight from LA. I do have 15 more minutes to spare as some/most Northwest flights are now operated by Delta so our flight is at 11:15 rather than 11:00 am :D. Thanks and i will let you know how it goes for us! daze823 Posted February 17, 2010 #18 Share Posted February 17, 2010 I would say you should be fine, but I would suggest you check your luggage in at curbside... the lines for some of the airlines ticket counters can get ridculously long on Saturday and Sunday mornings (due to all the cruises coming in around the same time), but you should be fine doing curbside check in, very rarely more than a 10 or 15 minute wait for them... Depends on how much luggage you need to carry off if you are going to do self assist. We were going to but would not have been able to handle all the suitcases. We just asked for Debark zone 2 from guest services and were off nice and early. Having all the paperwork done on the ship was nice, cab dropped us off, we checked the luggage in curbside and were sitting and waiting by 9am. Have a great cruise. If I remember correctly, their ship comes in on a Thursday so it will be fairly quiet at the airport. I would not want to try it say on a Sat though when the Oasis and 6 or 7 other ships are in port - it would be a zoo.
