lcumpire Posted December 10, 2009 #1 Share Posted December 10, 2009 We are on the Emerald in February in an inside cabin in the Eastern Carribean. There are many open cabins in the stern and only a few in the bow. Is one part of the ship more desirable? thanx lcumpire
paul929207 Posted December 10, 2009 #2 Share Posted December 10, 2009 Generlly, there is more motion near the bow.
Mary Ellen1 Posted December 10, 2009 #3 Share Posted December 10, 2009 Just off the Emerald. We cruised over Thanksgiving week. We had the aft-most inside cabin on the Riviera deck, starboard side (R745). It was a great location. We were mere steps from the aft Terrace Pool, and only one flight down from the Lido Deck, Cafe Caribe and Horizon Court. Yes, there was more motion there than in the center of the ship, but it wasn't bad & didn't bother us. I don't know if there are any interior cabins near the bow that are that close to an outdoor deck & pool. Mary Ellen
capnjack Posted December 10, 2009 #4 Share Posted December 10, 2009 Well of course the most desirable location is in the middle since that is where there is the least amount of motion. But in answer to your question, I prefer the extreme aft to the extreme forward. In fact, the aft facing cabins on the Grand class ships like the Emerald is one our favorite locations. In high seas, you will get extra motion in both extreme aft and extreme forward, but in the bow you are susceptible to bow slap when the waves crash in to the bow. Bow slap only occurs in high sea conditions, so you may or may not encounter it on your cruise. In the stern you get some noise and vibration from the prop wash. Prop wash is always present to some degree, but I don't find the vibration or the noise objectionable. Other people do. In the end, it depends on a number of factors including the seas you encounter and personal preference.
rjack22 Posted December 10, 2009 #5 Share Posted December 10, 2009 I would also prefer the aft over the bow.
bladerunner6 Posted December 10, 2009 #6 Share Posted December 10, 2009 If someone were to give the OP a suggestion to avoid aft cabins at all costs would they be issuing a stern warning?

chrysalis Posted December 10, 2009 #8 Share Posted December 10, 2009 notwithstanding the expert advice given by Colo Cruiser...but in the bow on the Plaza Deck is very nice, and convenient.

Crewzer33 Posted December 10, 2009 #11 Share Posted December 10, 2009 When you are in the bow area of the ship, you also may hear the anchor chains being let out EARLY in the morning (like 6 a.m.).

lcumpire Posted December 10, 2009 Author #13 Share Posted December 10, 2009 I would like to thank everyone for their responses - We usually stay in the aft if we cannot get in the middle. I will probably do that.
