booze shopping

Recommended Posts

Go to the end of Havensight closest toward the downtown where the Wendy's Hamburgers is, across the main road is a Pueblo supermarket which also has alcohol. The Kmart is in a small shopping plaza up about two long city blocks on the left on that side street. You can see the Kmart sign from end of the ship that is facing inland if it's docked at the postion closes inland.

I am sailing from Pt Canaveral and driving to port so I don't have to worry about flying. Since I will be in St Thomas I want to bring back as much duty free booze at the best price I can.

There is still a "duty free" limit. If you buy it in STT you can bring back 6 bottles but one of them has to be a local rum. Obviously you can bring back more if you want to pay the duty which is still a good deal.:D

There is a liquor store right across from havensight. it is no more than a ten minute walk and they will always have great selection and prices.

We found the prices in the San Juan airport to be excellent. Plus buying the liquor on the way home enabled us to carry it on to the plane with us, vs. shipping it home in our checked luggage..

We were in St. Thomas last month and neither of the above will even come close to the Kmart which is probably a 15 minutes walk away. We bought Paradise Rum for $3 and US Vodka for $2.50 per liter there. IMO for what we wanted that liquor store across from Havensight was even more expensive then the ones right in that mall. It's been a almost two years since we last flew out of SJU but then the prices for what we wanted were not that great compared to St. Thomas or St. Maarten.

I have not sailed Royal in about 6 years, but on the "fun ships" the liquor sold onboard the ship was the same pricing that I saw offshore. I believe they even offer price guaranties. Does Royal not have this?

My DH loves the Cruzan Dark Navy and the ship does not carry it so we always by it in STT, usually at the liquor store in Havensight. Kmart is a little cheaper, but b/c we buy so much, by the time we would take a cab to get there and back, the liquor store in Havensight is better. Still 1/2 what we pay for it in Florida, so works for me!

Yes, RC does have a price guaranty but they have to carry the product you want as the selection is limited. Also you have provide proof of the onshore price, either a advertisement flyer or a picture of the product in the store which shows the price. The latter can pose a problem to get as many of the onshore liquor stores with today's digital photo technology now do not allow photographs to be taken in their store. IMO this is to combat the cruise line price guarantee policies. We had bought a liter of Drambuie onboard our last cruise for $25 and then found it for $18 ***** St. Maarten. I was able to take a shot of it in the St. Maarten store but then decided to buy a second liter on St. Maarten and with the receipt I was able to get my onboard purchase price reduced to $18.

Unless you are buying cases of liquor, I know each American is allowed extra 5 liters of USVI alcohol product, the Kmart is only two blocks away from Havensight so you wouldn't need a taxi unless you had real difficulties walking or carrying purchases. I know we bought alcohol, soda, bottled water, shores and clothes ther and got it back to the ship with no problem. I mentioned 15 minutes to walk there but that is generous even at a leisurely pace. I did it in about 5 minutes at a fast walking pace. Also that Pueblo supermarket just across the main road (Veteran's Drive) from the Wendy's at the town end of Havensight also has a very large liquor selection at very good prices.

On Dec. 14, we were "busted" by customs and were required to pay duty after we were escorted to the "naughty room". The customs agent advised that the limit in STT is 5 liters per person, and not 6, as above stated. By the way, I had always believed that it was 6 as above stated.

Often in the past, I had exceeded the limit (but always declaring same); and, I was always waived through. I would suspect that this is simply another attempt by our present government to extract as many taxes from us as is possible. By the way, we were not the only ones escorted to the "naughty room". Also, it is cash only.

will being doing the western route. what is the best place to buy there?
Prices may be slightly cheaper in Cozumel, but for good prices and convenience it is tough to beat the liquor store in the cruise complex on Grand Cayman....and they have a good selection and good service. If you make your purchase in the morning, they will get it onboard the ship and the ship will deliver it to you on the last nite . Very convenient and you don't have to lug the booze all over the island.

I'm not quite sure what you are trying to say about my Kmart directions?
