Smoking on the Crown

We just got off of the Crown on Jan 16. We enjoyed it for the most part, but we were disappointed at the number of smokers that were around us. We had a balcony cabin and there were at least 7 cabins around ours that held smokers. It's difficult to sit on your balcony if you aren't a smoker. Can't Princess put all the smokers in one area or something?

Another thing that was disappointing was there wasn't really anywhere that had nice soft loungers that was in a covered area, meaning out of the sun (or in the case of this cruise out of the wind). Yes, we went to the Sanctuary, but for 4 of us it gets a little expensive. We did indulge for 1 afternoon, the one day it was sunny, and loved it. I guess I was used to the Grand where they had the covered Atrium area with nice loungers.

Overall, it was a wonderful cruise. Even though it was cool, it was still warmer than home! The food was awesome and it was a great vacation.

Well in defence of the original poster, and NOT to start up an anti smoking thread (truly) I dont see the harm either, in a "smoking section" of cabins. I have read, many times here, of complaints that people are uncomfortable on their balconies, because of smoke. Why would it be so difficult to put smokers on one side of the ship, and non smokers on the other? It does not sound unreasonable to me.

What if the non smoking side is full and the smoking side is 50% booked and more passengers want a non smoking balcony side??

This is probably why they don't adapt this style. It would be a booking nightmare (and probably a customer service nightmare).

I think the only way is a complete ban which probably wouldn't be right either because its not like on land where if a restaurant bans it, they can just step outside. I'm a non smoker, hate the smoke, but I just deal with it on the balcony. My wife hates the smoke smell more than me and if someone starts smoking in a nearby balcony, she just goes in the room till they are done.

I really hope you let Princess know your feeling about the smoke problem on you comment card. Complaining on this board will do absolutely no good what-so-ever. Smokers have their rights & as long as their in a designated smoking area there's nothing you can do about it.

As far as the soft loungers goes, they do everything possible to make you rent space in the Sanctuary short of charging for a seat elsewhere. It's strictly business.

I have no problem w/ smoking. My problem is with the rude smokers. They insist on sitting down next to people who are eating. If they just showed a little consideration, all would get along better!!!

I smoke but my husband quit this past April. When we both smoked we were respectful of others but if I am in a smoking section and a non smoker sat next to me and complained I would politely tell them to move to a non smoking section.

I only smoke in the smoking sections and on my balcony. I don't sit and chain smoke out there but I like to sit and have a cig while having my coffe or afternoon cocktail and before I go to bed.

I live in NJ and when the tried to put a smoking ban in all the casinos the revenue dropped so much they reversed the decision (should be coming up for a vote again).

Around the pool areas. For example, get some pizza or a hamberger and sit down at a table near there.

From what I have experienced, there is only a very small smoking area around the pool.

Usually, Port Side - Forward.

You and I were on the Crown TA in September; there was a small smoking area in that location.

Most of the pool area was designated -- Non-Smoking as I recall.

We had the same experience on Princess twice (balcony, then mini-suite). Our next two cruises are on Royal Caribbean in inside staterooms. We are just tired of dealing with the smoke and are looking at Celebrity for our next balcony cruise. Otherwise, we just love Princess, but they have to do something about this problem.

Most of the ship/s public areas are non-smoking. If your sitting in a smoking area with your food becaue you didn't take a few extra steps to be in the vast non-smoking areas of the ship expect to be smoked on. You have no right to complain.

The inconsiderate smokers sit in non-smoking areas and blow their smoke around while people are eating...ugh. All the cruise lines need to do is make all ships non-smoking. Everyone would be happier and healthier. Hope to see this soon.

And to the post about cruiselines going non-smoking, they will be out of business if that happens. Remember the Carnival Paradise? Whatever happened with that? They couldn't sell out the ship, that's what happened.

I could be wrong but I think Celebrity is actually all non-smoking?

They have some smoking areas but not in cabins or balconies 9that's on eof the reasons I am hesitant about booking with them. I think it's better to some in open air than in closed area.

Frankly I'm getting very tired about the holier than thou non smokers that believe they can shove their policies down everyones throats.

Yes, we were aware of Princess' smoking policy when we sailed and were hoping for the best. This was only our 3rd cruise and we didn't have any trouble with our other 2 so didn't really think it would be a problem. I'm sorry if I have offended anyone, that really wasn't my intent. I guess I should have made my topic more about the Sanctuary issue than the smoking. We did let Princess know on our comment card and we did receive a phone call saying that they are aware of the problem and haven't been able to figure out a way around it. So, sorry for beating a dead horse, I'll not bring it up again.

You did not offend anyone, its one of the "touchy" subjects and it does get beat to death when its brought up.

Don't be intimidated into not posting your comments, thats what we are all here for.

We're only relatively new to cruising and I SMOKE:D

That being said my wife doesn't so I NEVER smoke in our cabin:(

I do however smoke on Lido deck (the smoking side naturally) and when it's cold and damp in the one or 2 bars/lounge areas that are set aside for smopkers.

I HAVE NEVER HEARD ANYONE, ANYWHERE ON OUR CRUISES COMPLAIN ABOUT SMOKE/SMOKERS ...... I must also say, and my NON SMOKING wife agrees that you meet a much more agreeable and friendly bunch of people from all nations ON THE SMOKING SIDE:D

Perhaps that says something about the very few non-smokers who feel obliged to make an issue of it after the fact rather than address the problem immediately.

Now I'm off to the fun side of the boards, this is just too depressing, drives me to wanting to have another smoke;)
