mercedes28 Posted January 27, 2010 Author #8 Share Posted January 27, 2010 nope don't visit many forums. well until I booked a cruise now I'm obsessed! I figured out the MIL, SIL, FIL, etc and TA, but the others were unclear. some people use them in such a context that I thought....they can't be talking about people. I guess it's just the way they talk/type. I personally would/will just write husband, wife, sister, daughter, etc. to each thier own I guess. :D

ithaca gal Posted January 28, 2010 #15 Share Posted January 28, 2010 I used to call my husband "DH", with the H meaning Head and you can guess what the D stood for. When our son came along, he eventually asked what DH meant. I quickly said, "Dead Head" -- so now he probably thinks we are big Grateful Dead Fans! Cruisin_on_th_net Posted January 29, 2010 #20 Share Posted January 29, 2010 :o NFI???? soss I thought that was pretty common too:) NFI = N= No F = (naughty word such as Flippin' ;)) I = Idea. so basically no idea, with a colourful word in the middle!!!! I was the proud pres, as I truely had NFI about most of the nuances in the forum :D
Johnthed0g Posted January 30, 2010 #21 Share Posted January 30, 2010 I can't stand the DD etc things, same as text speak. I also think that ''smilies' & such are telling people what to think but I do see the attraction. My main hate is only XXX sleeps!!
Cruisin_on_th_net Posted January 30, 2010 #22 Share Posted January 30, 2010  emoticons telling people what to think?????? ZOMG!!!!! For me, when I use them (and I use plenty LOL!) it's trying to convey the nuance of my post. The written word can be difficult to interpret, (its the same as typing (tic) after something. It's just trying to let my reader know that it was meant in humour, with embarrassment / shame, with nfi or in anger etc. I definitely don't use emoticons with the intent of "telling others how to think or how to interpret my posts" I find my "NQ" humour is often lost with the average aussie let alone an american audience. The emoticons (for me anyways) is an attempt to give an interpretative indication to my meaning! Oh, and before you ask....... tic = tongue in cheek!!! LOL :) (ie I mean this last bit in a friendly way, not in a :p cheeky in ya face way....) NQ = North Queensland.

I realise what they are for but that's how I feel about them, I also think they are often an excuse to say something a bit unpleasant & get away with it. zekekelso Posted January 31, 2010 #24 Share Posted January 31, 2010 The "D" is context sensitive. While it often means "dear," as in my DH bought me flowers, it doesn't always. My DH lost $$$$ at the track, so our anniversary cruise will be an inside cabin instead of the suite he promised.
