Carnival Legend 1/31 - HELP lots of questions!

Recommended Posts

Our cruise departs from Tampa, Florida this Sunday 1/31 and it's our very first cruise, woohoo! We're arriving the day before to spend a night in a hotel.

We're staying at the Grand Hyatt Tampa Bay and we don't have a rental car, we'll be using shuttles/taxis.

1) The day of the cruise we're going to Busch Gardens and we'll be there when they open at 9:30 AM. The cruise leaves at 4:00 PM. What time should we leave Busch Gardens to visit our hotel to pickup luggage so we don't miss our cruise?

2) Is there a thread with a check list of stuff we need to bring for the cruise? Please remember this is our very first cruise. I read a few threads where it's recommended to bring a power strip, is this true? Off the top of my head, we only have 3 things which require power. 2 digital cameras and 1 camcorder. Other than the usual clothes, coat/jacket, personal hygiene, can you think of anything else that usually gets over looked?

3) Can anyone recommend any "must see" excursions or tours for the following:

02 FEB 10 - TUESDAY GRAND CAYMAN, CAYMAN AR: 700A LV: 400P

03 FEB 10 - WEDNESDAY COZUMEL, MEXICO AR: 1000A LV: 600P

04 FEB 10 - THURSDAY BELIZE AR: 800A LV: 500P

05 FEB 10 - FRIDAY ISLA ROATAN AR: 800A LV: 300P

4) Which of those locations offer the best snorkeling/swimming?

5) We might get sea sick, what's the generic drug called for sea sickness? I remember seeing two different kinds, what's the difference between them? Does CostCo carry this? If they don't, I can go to Walmart or Target.

6) We'll be bringing various Visa, MasterCard and Amex credit cards. How much American currency we should we bring?

7) Any last tips or helpful pieces of information would be greatly appreciated!

For those of you who read this thread and actually reply, thank you for taking the time to do so :)

I can not answer all these, as I have not been to these specific stops, but I will give what I can.

What time should we leave Busch Gardens to visit our hotel to pickup luggage so we don't miss our cruise? I would plan to arrive no later than 2 hours prior to departure, just in case there are any hold-ups checking in.

You will have to use your best judgement on what you will or will not need on your cruise. I studied these CC threads religiously for weeks prior to my first cruise and there is SO MUCH that is listed on this site from people that just isn't necessary. (i.e. duct tape, super glue, over-the-door shoe organizers for the bathroom, etc.) The following link has TONS of great advice for newbie cruisers. http://www.cruisecritic.com/ftc/

3) Can anyone recommend any "must see" excursions or tours for the following:

5) We might get sea sick, what's the generic drug called for sea sickness? I remember seeing two different kinds, what's the difference between them? Does CostCo carry this? If they don't, I can go to Walmart or Target. I personally, don't have issues with sea-sickness, but I have heard that BONINE is a wonder drug when it comes to that disorder. For milder cases, ginger snacks/ginger ale might work best.

6) We'll be bringing various Visa, MasterCard and Amex credit cards. How much American currency we should we bring? I would only bring enough cash with you to cover any additional cash tips you may want to give to your stewards/waiters/etc... It was my experience in Ensenada and Cabo San Lucas, that all shops and restaurants in port cities accepted plastic, so no problems there at all.

7) Any last tips or helpful pieces of information would be greatly appreciated! The best advice of all....... RELAX! IT'S VACATION! ENJOY YOURSELF AND DON'T WORRY ABOUT ALL THE MINOR DETAILS! You will have a great time, I'm positive! :)

For those of you who read this thread and actually reply, thank you for taking the time to do so :)

Hope that helped you out.

Re item #2: You probably won't need a power strip. My general rule when packing for a cruise is to take half of what I want to bring, and that will still be too much. The only MUST remembers are travel documents, including passports, and medicine. You can get anything else along the way.

Re item #3: Cozumel and Grand Cayman have great snorkeling. I can't tell you about Belize and Roatan as we haven't been there yet. Have you checked out the CC section, Scuba and Snorkeling? http://boards.cruisecritic.com/forumdisplay.php?f=40

Re item #6: You might want to travel with only one or two credit cards. Capital One doesn't charge fees for international use. There are some credit union cards that are also free of charges. Remember to call your credit card company to alert them of your travel before you leave home. It's a good idea to keep their international phone number with your travel documents in case a card is lost or stolen.

Have a great cruise!

Busch Gardens (BG) is not close to the port. Yes, it is in (North) Tampa and God forbid something happen on the interstate that fouls up your travel time. To play it safe you might want to go to BG to around 11:30 anyway. Is it worth paying for a full day ticket and only staying 2 hours?

More often than not, you are able to be aboard the ship around 11:30 or so and begin your cruise then.

I would skip Busch Gardens...you can be on board by noon...don't spend the extra money. You need to be checked in by 2:30.

I disagree that you don't need a power strip. The way the one outlet is configured in the room, my blow dryer will not fit...I need to plug it into the power strip. You may want to bring a small clock. You can use the phone to program a wake-up call, but I like to have the small clock.

Grand Cayman - Stingray City! I like the Stingray Safari Carnival offers - trip to Stingray City then head over to Rum Point Beach. Rum Point is GORGEOUS. You can't get there by cab, so it's not busy.

Cozumel - what do you like to do? You can do almost anything in Coz. I LOVE Palancar Beach...just get a cab from the port area.

Belize - IMO, excursions are a must in Belize. I liked Goff's Caye snorkeling and cave-tubing.

Roatan - Roatan has the BEST snorkeling I've ever seen!

I usually bring $500 cash for myself and come home with $250 or so.

Have a great cruise!

We just got off the Legend two weeks ago, so I'll try to answer as best I can.

1. As stated above, skip Busch Gardens, be at the Port at 11am and you can be on board eating lunch by 12 most likely.

2. Pack what you think you need, then take out half the clothes. We always pack to many clothes. Don't forget medicine, paperwork(Make sure you keep it with you, don't put it in your luggage), money, camera. Like the others said, if you need something you can always pick it up in port if you forgot something.

3. Grand Caymen - Stingrays or a beach excursion

Cozumel - Whatever you want to do, probably the best place to pick up souvenirs.

Belize - Cave tubing or Ruins.

Roatan - West Bay beach

4. Roatan - West Bay beach

5. Bonine is good, you can also get this at the Pursers desk. we really needed it on our cruise, hope you have better weather.

6. That is entirely up to you, I try not to use Credit cards to make purchases in port, I would rather use cash. But that is just my preference. Almost all people we have dealt with take credit cards.

7. Relax and have fun, everything will not be perfect, but enjoy yourself and make the best of it. Think of this one as a learning experience. Meet new people and have a great time.

Happy cruising.

Hey Mr & Mrs. Donut... here's my input. We just returned from an AWESOME cruise on the Legend a couple weeks ago. LOVE the ship, LOVE the itinerary. And Tampa was a great place, too. We stayed at the Embassy Suites downtown near the pier.

#1 - I HIGHLY recommend that you not go to BG the day of the cruise. Why don't you head to the pier early, get on board early and get the party started? We got there between 10:30 & 11:00, and were onboard before noon. You can enjoy some lunch & cocktails & go exploring the ship, or do some people watching. It's almost like a whole extra day on the ship when you do this.

#2 - For packing list ideas, do a search on here for packing lists... there are a gazillion. Some people take way too much stuff, but I have gotten some great ideas of things I needed by looking thru other's lists. We DO bring a long extension cord and have always needed and used it.

#3 - There's lots of great stuff to do at those ports. Head over to the Ports of Call section here on CC. Here's what we did: Cozumel - Nachi Cocum (all-inclusive beach, our underwater scooter tour was cancelled), GC - Sea Grape Beach, Belize - Cave-tubing with Major Tom, Roatan - Ziplining thru Island Marketing (This was our most favorite excursion by far).

#4 - Can't help you there...

#5 - Lots of people take Ginger pills (grab at Walmart or drug store in the vitamin section). Also, the guest services desk & infirmary on board give seasick meds out for free.

#6 - We've learned to bring more cash than we think we need. And less clothes. Cash for room service tips, casino, other tips in Tampa, on the ship, inports, purchases at ports, etc.

Keep reading on here, do some searches, you'll learn so much. But most of all, don't stress about the small stuff. Have a great cruise, and welcome to the addiction.

1. We left our hotel around 10:30 am and went directly by cab to the pier and boarded the ship after a short wait. Enjoyed lunch and were in our room at 1:30.

Maybe if you want to do something in the am you might like the Tampa Aquarium which is right by the pier? We didn't do this, but considered it. I would be too nervous trying to fit in Bush Gardens.

2.We did not bring a power strip and never wished we had one. If you have 4 people in a room you may have greater power needs, but we only had two per room. There is a hair dryer that has its own electrical source too if that makes a difference.

3.

Grand Cayman the stingray/snorkel excursions are very popular. 2 of the 4 of us were a little freaked by it, but we were clearly the minority! It is a unique and reasonable experience. My husband and son were impressed.

Cozumel Chankanabb was really nice and had a lot to offer. You can get there by a $10 cab ride and just pay the $16 entrance fee. search Cozumel parks for a $2 off coupon on their website if interested.

Belize can't recommend what to do here. We cave tubed and wished we had not as we had a different experience than they usually do and it was not a place I felt confident doing something they did not have experience with.

4. We enjoyed the brief snorkeling in Chankanaab before it rained and also enjoyed the snorkeling in Grand Cayman. Can't comment on the other ports as we did not try it there.

5. Target sells a 50 count generic bonnine for about $3. I couldn't find it at all and asked the pharmacist and here they keep it behind the counter. She gave me several options. Before I was buying the brand name small packs for lots more $ so ask. I hear they also give it out free on the ship, but this was convient and we had it for the air travel too.

6. We brought a couple of hundred dollars per person cash and then took more out with our credit card at the casino. We went to the casino several nights and just cashed out without gambling, there was not extra charge this way. We used cash for our excursions as they were private.

7. Have fun it is a great ship! If you are interested in more info here is a link to our review from 11/21-11/29/09 Legend Cruise.

I would suggest skipping the BG park. Too expensive for the few hours you will be able to stay on cruise day. I prefer boarding early and really enjoying that first day on the ship.

Would suggest stingray city for grand cayman. most of the excursions to it also include a stop for snorkeling.

In Roatan we did the Victor Bodden tour. was fantastic, included sightseeing around the island, snorkeling on a beautiful reef right offshore, and a great local lunch.

No recommendations for Belize unless you book an excursion.

I agree with skipping Busch Gardens. Being a local, we've done BG a lot and have never managed to get out of there without spending at least half the day there, usually longer. I would recommend only going to BG if you're not watching the clock to make sure you make it on time.

We haven't been on a cruise yet, our first is hopefully going to be next January on the Legend.

Thank you everyone who took the time to reply, it means the world to us. Isn't that what the spirit of forums are anyway?

You also saved us around $150 by recommending that we skip BG. Maybe we'll do that on a future trip/cruise devoting a 2 whole days to Orlando and BG.

Three more questions:

1) Should we take Bonine the night before or a few hours before the cruise? What's more effective?

2) Any other recommendations for excursions in Cozumel, Beliza, Cayman Islands and Isla Roatan?

3) Any quick and cheap sight seeing opportunities in Tampa, Florida?

We sailed the Valor a few weeks ago to the same ports that you are going to. Check out my review which is pretty heavy on the excursion side and see if anything appeals! :)

We were on Legend in April 1009, we loved the ship and crew! I'm sure you will too.

1. I'm going to agree with everyone else.......Skip Busch Gardens the day of the cruise. It's just not worth the risk of missing the ship.

2. We usually take a little power strip thingy, but everyone else is right.....avoid the temptation to overpack.

3. Grand Cayman, Stingray's and snorkeling with Capt Marvin

Cozumel, Just about anything.

Belieze. Cave Tubing. www.cave-tubing.com

Roatan. (Our favorite) Private tour with Victor Bodden. Ask for Tex, he is awesome!!

4. Not big on snorkeling.

5. Never been sea-sick. Can't help there. Alot of people swear by ginger tablets.

6. We bring $200-300 in cash.

7. Relax, enjoy and don't sweat any small issues that may arise. You will have a blast!!!

Don't go to Busch Gardens. You need to leave the hotel no later than 11:00 for the ship. No point in wasting half a day. If you do go to Busch garden leave no later than 12:30 to be on the ship by 2:00 and that might be pushing it.

Don't bother with a powerstrip. Get a plug with three outlets. You are never going to have to have all three things in charging at the same time anyway.

3) Can anyone recommend any "must see" excursions or tours for the following:

02 FEB 10 - TUESDAY GRAND CAYMAN, CAYMAN AR: 700A LV: 400P Contact Nativeway and do the Stingrays and Rum Point tour.

03 FEB 10 - WEDNESDAY COZUMEL, MEXICO AR: 1000A LV: 600P

04 FEB 10 - THURSDAY BELIZE AR: 800A LV: 500P

Take a ships excursion snorkeling or go cave tubing.

05 FEB 10 - FRIDAY ISLA ROATAN AR: 800A LV: 300P

Tabayana beach is not to be missed on Roatan.

4) Which of those locations offer the best snorkeling/swimming?

1. Tabayana Beach

2. Grand Cayman

3. Belize

4. Cozumel and it is a distant fourth.

5) We might get sea sick, what's the generic drug called for sea sickness? I remember seeing two different kinds, what's the difference between them? Does CostCo carry this? If they don't, I can go to Walmart or Target.

Get Bonine. or non drowsy Dramamine. Do not wait until you get sick to start taking it. If unsure take it the whole time or at least the first couple of days. You can get either at any drug store or target/walmart. Start Sunday morning.

6) We'll be bringing various Visa, MasterCard and Amex credit cards. How much American currency we should we bring?

Make sure that you notify your CC companies that you will be out of the country. Call the 800 # on the back of the card.

7) Any last tips or helpful pieces of information would be greatly appreciated!

Have a great time!

As others have said, don't go to Busch Gardens. You won't have time. If you really feel the need to see something before the cruise, go to the Aquarium. It is right next door. I saw a picture that someone took from their balcony and it was of the Aquarium - that's how close it is.

I read many of the packing list threads. They can get crazy detailed! But one thing I was glad that I brought was little clothespins. It made it really nice to hang up our swimsuits each day to dry off a little. I hate putting on wet suits!!

3) Can anyone recommend any "must see" excursions or tours for the following:

02 FEB 10 - TUESDAY GRAND CAYMAN, CAYMAN AR: 700A LV: 400P

In Grand Cayman, I think you really need to do the Stingray city tour.

03 FEB 10 - WEDNESDAY COZUMEL, MEXICO AR: 1000A LV: 600P

I've heard many people really like Paradise Beach. We did the ship's tour of the Tulum ruins.

04 FEB 10 - THURSDAY BELIZE AR: 800A LV: 500P

Cave tubing is very popular here

05 FEB 10 - FRIDAY ISLA ROATAN AR: 800A LV: 300P

You can stay at the new cruise terminal here and hit the beach. No excursion necessary.

4) Which of those locations offer the best snorkeling/swimming?

I've only snorkeled at Grand Cayman and it was nice.

5) We might get sea sick, what's the generic drug called for sea sickness? I remember seeing two different kinds, what's the difference between them? Does CostCo carry this? If they don't, I can go to Walmart or Target.

They say you are supposed to take this before you actually get seasick. I started taking it the night before. However after a couple days I started having a reaction to it (my tongue started to swell up) so I stopped taking it. I was surprised to find out that I didn't get seasick at all!! (Although if you take the ferry to the mainland in Cozumel, you might need the medicine. That ride was ROUGH!)

6) We'll be bringing various Visa, MasterCard and Amex credit cards. How much American currency we should we bring?

I bought enough cash for our excursions (we did private excursions) and tips. Make sure you get a nice amount of ones so you can tip room service, etc.

7) Any last tips or helpful pieces of information would be greatly appreciated!

Have fun!!

Thank you for the newest replies, tons of useful information.

We're definitely going to skip BG as it would be a huge waste of time and money.

I will call my credit card companies to alert them we'll be abroad and to approve the charges. I'll also see which (if any) of them DO NOT charge international fees? Unfortunately we do not have a Capital One cc. We do have CostCo Amex, BOFA Alaska Airlines and British Airways Chase credit card.

Both CostCo and Walmart were out of Bonine/Meclizine, can you believe that? Target is next, followed by Walgreens then Rite Aid. Surely one of those stores should have this simple OTC drug in stock?

Clothespins suggestion sounds like a great idea, we'll pickup a small packet at Target.

Does anyone else have suggestions for excursions?

GRAND CAYMAN, CAYMAN

COZUMEL, MEXICO

BELIZE

ISLA ROATAN

We don't plan on drinking alcohol/soft drinks on the ship and will eat mostly at the buffet. I wonder how much we'll end up spending in the casino and on excursions. Is it possible to walk away spending less than $800 total for the excursions for 2 people?

We also are on the rc for the legend. One thing I noticed no one mentioned was if you book an excursion with someone other than Carnival you might have to pay in cash. We booked Victor Bodden and he sent me an e-mail telling me they do not accept charge cards. You will have a great time no matter what you decide to do. Hope to see you at our meet & greet. Ruth

Good point booking with Carnival using cc or directly with cash.

What are the pros and cons of booking directly and paying with cash?

Which is cheaper?

You are going to have an amazing time : ) I went on this exact cruise with my parents last summer & we had a blast. I would also recommend skipping Busch Gardens the day of boarding. You don't want to be in a rush & it is always good to get on the ship early. As for your ports, I can tell you what we did on our cruise & what I want to try next : )

Grand Cayman - We did the Rays, Reef, & Rum Point tour through Nativeway. I highly recommend them because this was just about my favorite part of the cruise. They take you to Stingray City to swim with the stingrays, then to a reef to snorkle, then to Rum Point Beach to relax and have lunch. I would definitely do this again!

Cozumel - We went to Nachi Cocom. I can't remember the exact price, I want to say about 50$ a person. This price includes use of the beach, all of the facilities, and lunch. (Also all you can drink, alcohol included!) It is BEAUTIFUL and they only let a certain amound of people in, so it is not crowded. You have to book this before. Since you are leaving in just a few days I would recommend going to Chankanaab Park. I have never been there but my parents went and really enjoyed it. My dad said that he snorkeled & saw ALOT of fish. Also, if you like to shop then this is the port for you. They have everything.

Belize - This is the only port where we did an excursion through Carnival. We went on the Altun Ha & River Wallace tour. You go down the river and see some wildlife, eat at a resort, and then go to the Altun Ha ruins. I really liked it, but it is LONG. We did not have a chance to shop here, except for where we ate lunch at. Next time I go to Belize I would like to try cave tubbing (it is very popular here) and snorkeling.

Roatan - We went to Fins and Flippers. This place has a small island to itself and it is beautiful. They have a beach, pool, gift shop, wild animals, and other stuff. I loved this place and it has the best snorkeling I have ever seen. Im not sure of too many things to do here, but I know if I go back I will go snorkeling again.

HAVE FUN !!

Don't know if you tried asking the pharmacist for bonnine & generics, but I didn't realize that only the smallest boxes are on the store shelves and they were always sold out. The rest you must get from the pharmacist.

I was surprised that there were 3 choices when I asked the pharmacist and I had been checking the shelves for several weeks.

In Grand Cayman, we went on the Stingray Sandbar, Coral Gardens and Starfish snorkel with Nativeway. ($40)

http://www.nativewaywatersports.com/tours.htm

We booked ahead of time, but they did pick up people who decided to do it right at the port.

In Cozumel, we did the Tulum excursion with the ship.

Many people go to Paradise Beach

http://www.paradise-beach-cozumel.com/

As far as I know its free to use the beach as long as you buy food/drinks there. I think if you want to use the water toys you can buy a wristband for $12. That includes snorkel equipment too. But I'm not sure how good the snorkeling is there.

We haven't been to Belize yet, but we are going to do the Cave tubing on our next trip. Here is where many people book through

http://www.cave-tubing.com/belize-cave-tubing-prices.html

It is $45 per person.

In roatan we are going to do the Zip line at the new cruise terminal. It is $40 and has 13 platforms with 11 lines. Then we are going to hit the beach afterwards.

http://www.clipnziproatan.com/en/rates-reservations.html

Hope that helps with prices.
