We are booked on to the p and o cruise to the panama canal and wondered if we are allowed to take duty free on to ship. Not to drink as we are not that tight but if you went on to a Caribbean island surely you can buy rum ect to take home!?!

You can take alcohol onboard P&O ships, it is the only line that will allow you.

You can buy it at the airport and drink it in your cabin, nice G&T before dinner.

Also they will sell you duty free from your cabin steward plus the mixers to go with it. The price of a bottle is very reasonable around £11 to £12 last time we were onboard.

Enjoy your cruise.

Can't see any difficulty in bringing a bottle back.

But sadly I believe Leesre's post is (only just) out-of-date, there have been quite a few comments from recent Caribbean cruisers that P&O have changed their policy & no longer allow alcohol to be brought aboard for consumption in their cabins.

If that is true, & there's been enough confirmations for me to believe that it is, then P&O's policy will be in line with the majority of cruise lines which permit you to take alcohol aboard to bring back. They will take it from you when you board, but return it to you the day before the cruise finishes.

So no problem for the Fox :)

But for the rest of us.......

We flew out to Acapulco to join Oceana in January for the Panama cruise and we had no trouble taking duty free aboard. From what I have read it has only been on certain cruises on Ventura that P&O have used their right to ask people not to take alcohol on board but even then some people have taken it on in their hand luggage with no problem.

We also bought some rum ashore and took it onboard without any problem. So you should be fine.

I thought the new policy only affected Ventura.

Hi,

Just got our tour brochure for Ventura in the post yesterday and it states

" ........we reserve the right to confiscate alcohol at the gangway should the need arise. It is not our intention to invoke this policy as a matter of course and we will implement it only where we consider it is likely that health, comfort, safety and enjoyment of passengers may otherwise be compromised"

So looks like you should be ok.
