Bordeaux Question

St Emilion is so close that it really doesn't matter. 15 20 miles tops. I really love the village and think it might be the best destination that you could chose in the wine county. the dordogne is a 100 plus trip and a stretch though one you should think about. St. Emilion rocks. do it.

just checked 38 minutes from the Bordeaux St Jean Station.

I'll second that on St. Emilion. It's wonderful. We had a private guide and did two small chateaux as well as a great lunch in a simple outdoor bistro.

As for HAL, make sure that they are actually going to Bordeaux itself, not stopping at the entrance to the estuary. Bordeaux is a considerable distance up the estuary, and arrival there is very dependent on tides. Some cruises don't go up the river at all because of this. If you do dock in Bordeaux, it's likely you'll be right in the city.

Are there any tour guides or taxis for hire as you get off the ship?

Walk from the pier, and head for the Tourist Office....they will be of great help to you and should be able to help with what you need. Easy to find and anyone can help you along the way.

Since you are there for the night...make sure to note that the small streets in the area come alive with outdoor cafe's at night, and some wonderful places to eat if you choose not to dine on the ship.Or you can go ofr dessert:D

Is the town where the ship docks actually called Bordeaux, or is that the region?

Bordeaux is the town as well as the region due to all the wine making. You shgould Google it to get some more and possible handy info re your cruise.

Can anyone help me......we are scheduled for an over-night in Bordeaux (actually Bassens) during June of 2013. We would like to hire a driver to take us to a few vineyards, wineries, etc. and maybe get us set up for the night at a bed-and-breakfast. We want to be in the French "countryside" as much as possible and will have our teen-age daughters with us. Any recommendations for this idea?

Thanks,

Susan

Keep in mind that hiring a private car/driver for a full day will often cost you 400-500 Euros. Renting a car for the day will generally cost you less then 100 Euros and with a GPS...and some homework you will find navigation to be quite easy.
