hcrane Posted March 4, 2010 #3 Share Posted March 4, 2010 Sorry to all you smokers out there, but as a non-smoker, I am happy. As a previous smoker, I too am glad that Cunard has instituted this policy. I tried to stop many times but was finally able to rid myself of this horrible addiction with the help of bupropion. Berserker Posted March 4, 2010 #9 Share Posted March 4, 2010 cabins / staterooms should also be Non smoking!! What on earth are you taking? LSD? What on earth makes you think that such a draconian step is either desirable or economically viable? In point of fact, the more smokers are banished to their cabins, the more they will smoke there. What is, surely, required are areas that smokers can actually have a peaceful time. It will clearly be standing room only in Churchills. Some people here really are seeking to be vicious. And, for the record, I'm a non-smoker who has lost more than one member of his family to smoking.

Titanorac9370 Posted March 4, 2010 #18 Share Posted March 4, 2010 Why on earth should smoking be banned on balconies? It's in the fresh air for god's sake. You will get more bad air on deck from the funnel exhausts. Or lingering farts in the lifts for that matter. Give me strength!

phillipahain Posted March 4, 2010 #22 Share Posted March 4, 2010 Smoking Cigarettes on Balconies seldom causes problems for the neighbouring balconies IMHE However pipes and cigars on Balconies is an entirely different matter and the stink can often be apparent many many balconies away Balconies are by no means as "outside air " as you might think
The Second Snark Posted March 4, 2010 #23 Share Posted March 4, 2010 Why on earth should smoking be banned on balconies? It's in the fresh air for god's sake. You will get more bad air on deck from the funnel exhausts. Or lingering farts in the lifts for that matter. Give me strength! Many cruise lines have banned smoking on verandah's because of the potential for another incident such as the fire on board the Star Princess in March 2006. It's assumed that a cigarette was thrown overboard only to be blown back setting light not only to the fixtures on another verandah, but also the partitions. The movement of air which was caused by the vessel resulted in the fire spreading easily into adjoing areas. In the end over 100 cabins were affected, although the vertical fire zone and actions of the crew prevented a more serious incident. As a result, most lines have removed flammable plastic furniture form cabin verandah's and have changed their partitions. They also advise that swimming costumes not be left outside for that reason. At least in the above incident, only one person died as a result. Not surprisingly, most on board didn't take it quite so light heartedly... Berserker Posted March 4, 2010 #25 Share Posted March 4, 2010 This is what the UK site says, or at least did a few moments ago..... What is the smoking policy on board Cunard ships? For the comfort of all our guests, restaurants, lifts and certain other public areas have been designated non-smoking areas. However, Cunard Line recognises that some of our guests may wish to smoke whilst on board and has therefore designated smoking areas on its ships. Outside, on the open decks, smoking is only permitted on the starboard side of the decks as well as the forward and aft areas of deck 10 (Queen Elizabeth and Queen Victoria). Inside, smoking is only permitted within the Churchill's Cigar Lounge and Empire Casino aboard all ships. Guests who enjoy pipes or cigars are accommodated each evening in the Churchill’s Cigar Lounge aboard both ships, and we do ask you to refrain from smoking pipes and cigars in other public areas. On board both ships, smoking is permitted in staterooms. As you will probably be aware, a ban on smoking in public places came into force in the UK on 1 July 2007. However, at the time of going to press, detailed regulations in relation to ships had not been published and no date had been set for the extension of this ban to ships. It does however seem likely that the ban will extend to our ships and therefore have some impact on the ability of our guests to smoke whilst on board. We will of course make sure that guests are clearly informed of the position as it then stands whilst they are travelling with us.
