Newport, Rhode Island/Bermuda cruise question

By default, I may do a Summit cruise shortly. Leaves Jersey, goes to Newport and then Kings Wharf.

*Anyone been on Summit recently, how was it vis a vis service, and food?

*Newport....anything interesting? Worth seeing?

*King's Wharf...same question.

Thanks

Newport is a nice town, but if it were me, I would want to spend 3 days in Bermuda. Lots to do/see in Bermuda and make you want to return. We're doing the 30 May Summit -- this will be our 3rd time to Bermuda.

Newport is a great town. Many things to do besides the usual tourist stuff. Tennis Hall of Fame is interesting. There are several "museums" about sailing and lots of history of the America's Cup.

I love Bermuda but was not impressed with Kings Wharf when we stopped there for a day last Nov on the Constellation.

Newport has the Tennis hall of Fame, the Mansions, Cliffwalk, America's Cup Blvd and Thames Street which have many fine restaurants and bars. In the summer, there will be many sailboats and yachts along the various wharfs. There is shopping in Brick Market. One town over, Middletown, there are a couple of vineyards and a brewery. The oldest Synagogue in North America is within walking distance of the piers as well as the church that JFK and Jackie were married in. First, Second and, Third Beaches are a short cab ride away.

Take a taxi over to Ocean Cliff Hotel and have lunch there. Then relax in a chair with a coffee or beverage in a outdoor adoronack chair with one of the best views of a harbor ever. Watch the boats coming and going.

Absoulutely the best, wouldn't you agree RedCrown?

I agree with other posters that you can have a wonderful day in Newport; a little bit of research will help you narrow down a fairly extensive list of activities to those that most appeal to your interests.

When I was last at Kings Wharf, it was not very active or impressive, but it is a short, easy ferry ride to Hamilton and an equally easy bus ride to the south shore beaches and resorts. The public transportation system is good, and because the island is fairly small, getting around to more interesting places is not very difficult.

I love both Bermuda and Newport. I hope you have a great trip.

Love, love, love Newport. Cliffwalk and mansions a truly unique experience. Must've walked 10 miles each day we were there. Beautiful scenery, charming restaurants, cute shops, Newport has it all. Bermuda is wonderful too, I may need to look at this sailing..........:)

JEDIKNIGHT asked: ....I assume one can bus to Hamilton from King's Wharf, and get back in time as per the ship requirements?......

Yes, you could take the bus from the Dockyard to Hamilton but that takes about 62 minutes. What would be better would be to take the ferry from the Dockyard to Hamilton which takes 20-25 minutes.

BTW, King's Wharf is the name of one of the docks that the cruise ships ties up to when visiting Bermuda. King's Wharf & Heritage Wharf, (the other dock), are located in the area referred to as the Dockyard because of its early history as a Royal Navy Base.

Going to Newport on March 24th....not on a cruise but for my son's commissioning as an Ensign in the Navy. Can't wait to see the town (and him!) There is also a very good Naval museum from what I have heard.

Congratulations to your son and you and your family. There will be plenty to do as previously noted. There may be a naval museum on base. Since you will have your own transportation you may want to try some of the surrounding communites such as the America's Cup Museum in Bristol. If you are a fan of good Italian food, you could take the 35-40 minute drive to Federal Hill in Providence. It has become more eclectic on "The Hill", but there is still many fine Italian places there. Portuguese food may be found in neighboring Fall River or East Providence. Casino - Fowwood's is only about 45 minutes away.

Been to Newport many many times. Don't miss the mansions, especially the Breakers, and I agree with others the cliff walk is great, too. My favorite spot is the Black Pearl restaurant on the wharf. It is very touristy but eating the lobster roll and the clam chowder while sitting on the outside patio watching all the yachts come and go is a great way to spend the day. Congratulations snowmc on your sons accomplishments, I'm sure you are very proud.

Jedi, I assume you will have your daughter with you? The Cliffwalk is awesome and a "must see". I can't remember how old she is, but a stroller might be a bit tricky on it, as some sections are uneven and narrow. Might be a good opportunity to use one of those backpack kid toter thingies. There is some very close by shopping and a visitor's bureau within walking distance. Of all of the ports we have visited, Newport remains one of our favorites. When we went to Bermuda, our son was 18 months old, so we didn't venture very far and never got to Hamilton. We found plenty to do though, the port area shopping is pretty typical of many Carribean ports (but I really loved the lrish linens and gorgeous sweaters available). We found lots of beautiful places within strolling/walking distance. There is an awesome beach about 1.5 miles from the port (it's a little uphill, but still pretty easy) that is great for kids because it is protected and the waves are nonexistent. Plus there is a restaurant/bar with restrooms. It's been about 3 years now, maybe someone else will remember the name of the beach? I'll put my thinking cap on and see if I can remember. Have fun, sounds like a great trip!

I've put my thinking cap on too. The only beach at the Dockyard is Snorkel Park Beach which is less then a 10 minute walk from King's/Heritage Wharves. And I've never heard it referred to as awesome plus it is a man made beach.

The beach that is most popular and could be called awesome is Horseshoe Bay Beach, located on the south shore about a 30-35 minute bus/taxi ride away from the Dockyard.

I could be wrong on this; wouldn't be the first time.

The 1.5 mile beach is the beach in Mangrove Bay, Somerset Village. The restaurant is probably the Somerset Country Squire. There is another beach just out of Dockyard, following the main road, called Black Bay. No facilities, but nice swimming if you prefer the calmer waters of the north side of the island. If you are looking for a large beach with full facilities you can join the masses at Horseshoe, or travel a little further on the bus and get off at Warwick Long Bay and basically have a whole beach to yourself. You can always walk back the 3/4 of mile to Horsehoe - there are lots of little coves/beaches along the way. Bermuda is great - but get out of Dockyard. If you have any questions about the island the Bermuda forum is a great place. Enjoy!

yeah... like I said, it's been a few years..=) After looking at the youtube footage, I'm thinking that it was Tobacco Bay. It couldn't be that far, because we walked it and pushed a stroller.

Newport is a wonderful town with all its surroundings. It's great for a long weekend visit.

If you're going on a cruise to Bermuda, why break it up with an 8-10 hour stop in Newport? Spend the entire 3 days in Bermuda. You've got your transportation, meals, and lodging all taken care of plus you get to explore this great island.

Newport, R.I. , Boston MA. and the Bermudian Islands ( Somers Isles) are all wonderful places with a lot to do, see and be.

Transportation in all three are nice. In Bermuda they have a wonderful Bus/Ferry Public System and so so much to do too.:D
