my impressions of the Oasis

Hi, Just got off the Oasis. It is worth every penny spent.

 

I had an aft balcony on the Boardwalk and loved it. Felt I was still in the action, but could still see the water. I loved sitting out there at night and seeing people walking around. (though not to busy)

 

I can't see why spend money on cupcakes when the desserts in the Windjammer were just as good. I had a Boston Cream Pie that was to die for. Key Lime Pie was good also among many other cookies and desserts. I wasn't that impressed with the Cupcake Cupboard Red Velvet, but I have been to Sweets in Boston, which has real gourmet cupcakes.

 

The shows were unbelievably great. I made my reservations on-line and it worked out well. I would suggest making them on-line and then you do not have to worry about it. Consider going to Hair Spray during the sea day as it is shown at 2:30.

 

Someone said the coffee sucked. I thought it was vey good. There is a free doughnut shop on the Boardwalk and they also have flavor shots for your free coffee. Lots of different flavor doughnuts and they are good.

 

This boat rocks, literally. Someone said it is because of the way the wind catches the inward balcony areas but I had to take my sea sick patch. I was surprised.

 

The mashed potatoes in the Windjammer are the best mashed potatoes I have ever eaten, lol.

 

Water, ice tea and lemonade is available for free. I like to mix the ice tea and lemonade together. The water is very pure and there is no need to bring your own bottled water.

 

I was disappointed when we were assigned to a table for 2 for our early dining option, but it actually worked out better. You still can talk to your neighbors like a big table, but you don't have to drag out dinner for 2 hours (unless you want to) waiting for everyone to get their dinners, wine, desserts, etc.) I will be requesting this type of dinning if available on future cruises.

 

Richard Spacey, the cruise director, is the funniest man. He bounces around like a jumping bean!! So entertaining.

 

The service was absolutely outstanding except one day at Johnny Rockets for breakfast, but other than that it was great.

 

The pizza is very good. The Park Cafe is a great place for soups and salad and sandwiches. The solarium bistro is also great for lunch. I thought the food in the Windjammer was really good, though I miss having sushi for free.

Great review. I have a question about the rockiness. This is first cruise for my family and have heard a number of different views on how rocky the ship is from not at all to very to sometimes. We are going out next week so I would imagine our conditions would be somewhat similar to yours, although I suppose you never can tell. Was it consistent or just a sporadic thing? Have you done other cruises and if so how did it compare in terms of rockiness? Oh, and thanks for the tip about the key lime pie.....

We sailed 2/27 and couldn't tell the ship was moving until after leaving St. Marteen. They have a long haul back to the Bahamas and this time of year it can be cool and the seas are a little more active. That being said, you felt a little swell every once in a while, mostly met by giggles as people were walking and not constantly. We usually like feeling a rocking ship especially when going to sleep at night, but never felt it in the staterooms. We have been on ships where air sick bags were stashed all over the place. No worries here.

I know this is subjective, but what did you think of the lemonade? I'm debating on whether to get a soda pass or not. On every ship I've been on so far, the lemonade was dreadful . . . except one, and that was on Carnival Freedom, which we took from Rome through the Mediterranean and across the Atlantic. 16 nights and I decided to just save the money and stick with the lemonade since it was actually that good. So, what is your opinion of the lemonade on the ship? I guess I could always try it out first thing upon boarding and see what I thought and then decide whether to buy a soda pass or forget it. Any input? Thanks.

We were surprised to feel any motion as well, especially right out of Miami and a bit on the return. It was certainly nothing like we've experienced on other ships, but it was noticeable, particularly in the promenade where you think you're in a resort hotel promenade in Las Vegas and suddenly the floor moves (without benefit of adult beverages :p) and you remember you're on a ship.

 

Others have mentioned the "connection to the sea" issue. Sometimes it was a real struggle to feel that connection (Promenade) but other times (Deck 14 over the bridge), WOW.

 

Other impressions...very easy to get around, very intuitive. And the art! Surprises everywhere, very interesting pieces. My favorite art museum is now the Oasis. :) I'm really enjoying the coffee table Oasis art book I received when I got the Oasis poster I ordered...to remind me where I need to be. ;)

Regarding the rockiness, it was sporadic but defeintely there. It was rocky in bed, which I actually liked. Fell asleep just like a baby!! I was talking to a family that had sailed the Freedom and they said the Oasis was much rockier. It was not out of control by any means. I was on the Radiance once during a storm and it was much much rockier. I haven't been on the Freedom or Voyager classes. Regarding the lemonade and the soda pass, I liked the lemonade, but mostly drank water. I like coke in a can so that is not on the soda pass so I splurged on my one or two canned cokes per day. I got the soda pass once and I didn't think it was worth it. You have to drink alot of soda to make out on the soda pass. The art is stunning and you can take a tour which got rave reviews from the people I talked with. On one of the tours, one of the artisit was actually on the ship so I am sorry I missed that. Mostly on the ship I tend to just vegetate during the day and people watch. The ship is very easy to get around but it is so big it takes time to get to really know it. I still got confused up on the pool decks of where I was going!!!

I, for one, am so happy to read such positive comments about Oasis. The comments bring back many happy memories. It just seems as if our cruise on Allure in February 2011 is too far away. I hope we can book Oasis for a repeat cruise between now and then, maybe in the fall. I can't wait to eat lunch in Giovanni's Table again and sit and luagh my head off in the Comedy Club.

Plenty of elevators and never long waits. Especially liked the touch screen board which gave you directions to where you wanted to go.

May I ask which deck your cabin was on and did you get much sunshine on your balcony? I see in some of the photos that some cabins are basking in the sun.

 

I'm really beginning to like the sound of the interior balcony cabins, especially the aft ones with a sea view. I just wondered, does the area have a wind tunnel effect and does the noise carry in the semi enclosed space? Thanks :)

We cruised to 2-27-10 to 3-6-.....There were over $1,000 diamond members onboard ! The Captain told us the taller the shipp the sway would be a little more. The most we experiened was after Nassau back to Ft. Lauderdale. Actually felt like a baby in a cradle going to sleep. Leaving the show that evening yes everyone was laughing and enjoying the sway. I totally agree this is such an awesome ship that and Richard Spacey made it totally enjoyable. I think there were at least 6 banks of elevators and we never waited longer than 5 min. It is laid out so well that you really dont feel there are 6,000 on board. There were so many from other countries onboard everyone was excited to be on the Oasis. Must say we had a lot of party hardy folks the 70s night was going strong ! Yes Richard went down to his skivies. He is a total hoot. He will be getting off soon for a well deserved rest. Agree with you on the cupcakes. BUT the truffle turtle really was great. So much to do and see. It is an awesome ship. More later !

The other good thing about the elevators. On port days, you don't have to worry about which deck the gangway is on. Step inside the elevator and push the gangway button and you are on your way.

DH and I will be sailing on Allure in December with our daughter, who will be 15 months old at the time. I was wondering what you could tell me about the Solarium Bistro? I know that it's free at breakfast and lunch, but I was wondering what the rule is on children since it's located in the Solarium, which I know is adults only. DH and I enjoyed the small cafe area in the Solarium on Solstice for a quick breakfast or snack and would like to do the same on Allure, but we don't want to intrude on others who have gone there to bask in the "adults only" glow.:eek:

I ate at the Bistro for lunch twice and I honestly did not see any children. I don't know about breakfast though. It got quite popluar and it was hard to find a table at lunch and some people took the lunch out into the Solarium itself. I ate room service on excursion days and Johhny Rockets and the dining room for breakfast as the Bistro was at the other end of the ship and it was far to go just for breakfast. Your baby will love the carousel and the Boardwalk area. I loved seeing the little faces light up!!

I did not pay for any dining options because the free food was great and this was the only way I could justify paying more money for the cruise. I don't think I missed out on anything. First of all I am a vegetarian so I wouldn't of benefited and secondly my DH was extremely happy with the food served for free. The only thing I spent money on was the cupcake and it wasn't worth it. I have been on other speciality restaurants already anyway. Of course we spent money on alcohol, but not counting the money I spent in the casino I only spent like a hundred bucks on my sail pass. I did buy a banana chocolate crape (sp?) in St. marteen.

Thanks for the great review! We are also going to be in a Boardwalk Aft cabin, 12325, which appears to be 3 cabins from the end. Sounds like you liked your cabin and we're hoping that we won't miss our usual Oceanview balcony. Did you use the public balcony at the end of that floor that looks out over the ocean? We thought that we would be close to that, just in case we didn't get a good view of the ocean. Thanks!

I have a question about the Comedy Club. How often do the acts/comedians change

during the week? I see there is a show every night. Is the 8:30pm and 10:30pm

the same show? Do they change daily?

I heard that the comedy club is the same every night. I really enjoyed it. It is a small venue so you should try to book it beforehand.

 

Regarding the ice tea, it seemed fine to me, but I am a water and Diet Coke out of the can drinker. I liked mixing it with lemonade and I was very happy with that.
