Pools and Toddlers

Recommended Posts

If you do bring a small inflatable pool, for your sake bring a small one that will fit on the balcony and won't take too many buckets of water to fill... The balconies at best are four foot wide, at the worst three foot wide. Maybe someone will say what size they brought...

I just had to pop my head in and say the following:

We have an 18 month old. She went on her first cruise at around 12 months and has been on about 3 in the past six months. Her first cruise, at exactly a year old, was on the Norwegian Sky. I read all the posts about if kids "really" had to be potty trained to use the kiddie pool...and decided it was going to be a tough five days as I was not really sure what we were going to do with her during the day (she started walking at 9 months very active child...etc). Well I almost brought my inflatable pool...ending up forgetting to bring it. I did however for the private islands bring swimsuits and swimmies. Well, I get on this boat to just go check out the kiddie pool and surprise! Seriously, about 25 kids in SWIMMIES. No child in the kiddie pool did not have them. Obviously not the official NCL policy but no one said anything and needless to say yes, my child did play in the kiddie pool the whole cruise. With the other 25 children in swimmies.

Now my toddler is 18 months and she actually swims underwater holding her breath for about 3-4 feet at a time without armbands but I would never take her in the deep pools as they are far too dangerous with too many young, but older, kids running around etc. I did see many parents who put babies and toddlers in there but I certainly wouldn't.

I am just saying that every time we get on a ship we prepare to not take her swimming...but we do always check out the kiddie pool on the first day...and take the lead from there. The swimmie kids are always there, and no one has ever said anything regarding it on NCL.

And putting your booger-muncher into that pool of swimmie diapers is still dangerous....for YOUR kid. That's the real point.

Luddite- agree 100%.

When I was little I remember after being totally potty trained we were able to go to Sherman Oaks swim school. By this time we had been in the ocean many times, but did not go into ANY public pools until we were past the accident stage. Thanks, mom.

Indeed and I appreciate the concern. Its always a judgement call on my behalf...my child has been to almost 16 different countries in her first year and half due to my job and has only gotten sick once...her immune system is better than many adults' in my opinion; and considering the kiddie pool water is about 10 inches high and constantly filtered I tend to not worry so much....

my child is almost 100% potty trained but I would still always put her in swimmies, just in case.

I was simply stating for the OP what I see on cruise ships and how I judge it. Obviously I would never want to make anyone uncomfortable while they vacation by breaking the rules...but if I see so many other parents do it without repremand I know I will avoid countless tandrums and tears (she normally goes swimming twice a day so its hard for her to understand why she isn't allowed).

Basically to each his own but again I"m jumping on the Sky this Saturday for the weekend cruise and believe me, I'm taking the swimmies.

Besides....think about the adult hot tubs....15 adults drinking cocktails without moving for six hours straight....don't even try to tell me that thing is half full of urine!!!!!!! Shes probably safer in the kids pools...with the swimmies....

Luck counts. It is not wise to count on luck.

Once again, this is why the wife and I never go into any pool or hot tub on a ship. For us, it's not worth taking a chance.

...

I hope somebody catches anybody who does this. This is how NORO gets spread, along with many other things. Anybody that does this should be kicked off the ship at the next port with no refund.

And, you should do some research on the issue of urine in the pool vs feces. This is serious stuff.

You are putting so many people at risk doing this. Shame.

I hope someone else from your roll call sees you and complains. Shame on you.

You WILL be making others uncomnfortable

I don't want to be accused of telling someone how to raise their child BUT......when you are risking someone else's health, little Missy will just have to get over tantrums and tears.

To each his own but by taking swimmies, you are forcing others into what YOU choose.

TOTALLY different. It's not an appetizing thought but it IS OK to ingest urine. BTW, I think it should be....don't even try to tell me that thing is NOT half full of urine.

...and you know it.

Having 4 kids I am well aware of the desire to avoid tantrums and tears. Nonetheless, it is simply selfish, arrongant, gutless and inconsiderate to subject other guests to your child in a diaper of any sort. I am sure your child is wonderful. I am sure your child ALMOST never has an accident. But let's face it, you are wrong...and in your heart you know it.

A few years ago at Beaches Resort in Jamaica I watched a woman sit her bare-assed infant right on top of the bar at the swim-up bar. Right in front of the bartender who didn't say a word. Needless to say, I didn't order any more drinks from that bar. Unfortunately, the staff on cruise ships and at resorts are instructed to avoid confronting guests so this behavior will inevitably continue.

great post, you are right, for the most part the crew will say nothing. I will add though, as for the kiddy pool and swimmy diapers, apparently the crew will ask mommy or daddy to remove the child. It just blows my mind to think a parent would break the rules or laws. To me this is a parent that has decided rules are made for everyone else, their child is more important than others and to say no, to a child will damage them for life. What happened to the days when parents realized kids have a place and it isn't at the center of attention. I feel this way about the pool regulations, the not allowing kids in the casinos, not taking a child into the cruise ship bar, nor the shows at night or the upscale restaurants. i think the sur charge dining rooms like the Mexican or asain are a little different. Oh well, just an old fashion parent talking here:::
