How's the coffee?

I plan on booking a cruise in June on the Sky. I have mostly sailed with Princess and their coffee is just do-able, it's made from a syrup concentrate. I drink it but I don't like it very much, so I buy a coffee card that Princess sells that gets you 15 specialty coffees and all the brewed coffee you want. I was just wondering what everyone thinks about the coffee served on NCL. I'd appreciate any comments:)

As subjective as food tastes are, I fear coffee taste is even moreso.

I am pretty particular about my coffee, but on my NCL cruises I found the coffee from room service to do the job in the early morning. Further, back when I was cruising, a few years ago now, they had coffee makers in the room which produced a serviceable output.

For reference, at home I buy Vanilla Hazlenut beans which are ground and brewed fresh.

I loved the coffee!!!

Good to know, you wouldn't believe how the Princess boards are full of how the people hate their coffee.

You are right people have such different tastes for coffee, I too like flavored coffee such as what you mentioned, however in the morning I like a plain ole good cup of regular coffee.

It is barely drinkable, just like every other cruiseline we have sailed. We still drink it though, because it is hot and wet!

I thought it was great. We only drink the free stuff, and the stuff in the room.

They do have a coffee bar where you get your coffee loaded up with flavors, sugars, etc., all at a cost. No card that you can buy though.

Well, in case I don't like it..it's only a 3 day cruise:cool:

On Pearl it was decent enough to give a fresh start to the morning. When I craved for a 'real' coffee I used to buy Latte from their Java Cafe. It costs $2.88 which includes the tip and I thought it was awesome. Only 1 out of 6+ times I had they messed it up by not making it enough hot (I like my coffee very hot).

The coffee machines on the Jewel actually had bean grinders on top. Coffee was the best I've ever had on a cruise.

Good to know as we'll be on the Jewel in a matter of a few weeks. I do have to admit the coffee on Princess is not good! Fresh brewed with the coffee card, excellent. Go figure !

We just got off the sky, the coffee was ok, better in the main dining room. We brought some of the new starbucks instant sticks and indulged in some of those a few times, we enjoyed them as a treat. We like strong coffee that knocks you off your feet, just don't forget to bring carry along cups.....so many people asked me "where did you get the cups" and were so sad when I said, "from home"

OK, I admit I'm a coffee snob, but I thought the free coffee on the Pearl (in Jan) was horrible! However, the expresso type drinks at the Java cafe were OK. As many have said, tastes are subjective. If you're used to high-quality, fresh roasted beans you will not enjoy the free coffee. However, if you're used to Folgers etc., you'll be just fine. Regardless of how you feel about the coffee, I hope you had as much fun as I did.

I just got off the Jewel yesterday. I thought the coffee in the main dining rooms was good, but the coffee in the Garden Cafe was really bad. They would put coffee out by the pool early in the morning and it was terrible too. The casino had coffee the first morning and it was good, but they only put it out that one time. They did have an expresso maker at the end of the early riser breakfast area between the Garden Cafe and the Great Outdoors. It was good if you like expresso.

I am a true coffee-holic!!! I have not been on the Sky, but on the Spirit and the Star and have no recollection of the coffee being bad, and trust me, I would remember!!!

I guess all I can do is hope for the best. I too am a coffee-holic;) I do think there is a difference between being that and being a coffee snob...I appreciate a good cup of coffee, it doesn't have to be a gourmet coffee, just a good Arabica( 8oclock or dunkin) and almost any kind of columbian. Never reheated, kept on the burner or instant of any kind.

coffee like food is so subjective: I think the coffee on NCL for the most part sucks, others have said they think it is great. You will have to judge for yourself on this one.

Same on the Jade. Room service coffee was not too bad either - good enough to bump start the body first thing anyway! (The room service juice is lovely BTW)

My impressions of coffee on NCL have always been from OK to great. The coffee made with the French Press has always been perfect. I would have said I had never had the coffee in the buffet, but Doug said I have and since I don't remember it, I would have to say that it was just OK. I am sure folks get tired of me saying this when the subject of coffee comes up, but we had the coffee machines with the grinder on top in our suite on the Star and it made THE WORST coffee I have ever had. I really do think we had a malfunctioning machine though. On the Dawn we had the kind where you pop in the little pods and it makes the coffee that way and it was so good I drank more coffee than I ever have in my life.. and trust me when I say.. THAT IS A LOT.. LOL. At home I drink coffee from the time I wake up until the time I go to bed. On the Dawn I am surprised I could sleep at all from all the coffee I was drinking. (Thats one way I am sure Doug knew I wasn't feeling well because I was sleeping with all the coffee I was drinking.. LOL). I have bought coffee at the coffee cafe thing a couple of times on the Star only because I was just sitting and resting while Doug was off doing something and I wanted to sit and have a coffee while I people watched. It was just a regular coffee and it was very good. For $3 it should be.. LOL. The coffee bar on the Sun had great coffee too. I seem to remember sitting there chatting with our Concierge while having coffee once and enjoyed it.

I very much appreciate everyone's input, unfortunately I couldn't get flights to and from Miami to my liking so I will not be cruising with NCL this year. I found a good deal with RCI leaving from Fort Lauderdale.....again, thanks and happy cruising!:)
