candygirl27540 Posted May 4, 2010 #26 Share Posted May 4, 2010 We stand on our balcony, with my arm around my best gal and we SING!!SING!!!SING..... "I'm a lumberjack and I'm OK, I sing all night and I work all day..." Of course, this get's the attention of the people on both sides of us. Funny, we never see them again....:p If its the "Monty Python" version I can understand why you don't see them again!!!
LOWTYD Posted May 4, 2010 #27 Share Posted May 4, 2010 We used to do the pool deck sailaway parties then I (or it) got old!:o It not that I didn't enjoy, I just needed something new. I really enjoyed sitting on our aft balcony and watching the port fade away into the distance and toasting with our neighbors on either side of us. Guess we all had the same idea.:)

BIG_Steve Posted May 4, 2010 #29 Share Posted May 4, 2010 We have a tradition of being on our balcony, me with a cup of coffee, Doug usually with water or a coke, and watching the port fade away. Boring to some I know.. but nothing I love more than being there at that moment with the love of my life. I sure am going to miss seeing you in the casino on our cruise this month. Wish you guys could some how join us onboard. Hope you are all doing well. Aw c'mon. We all KNOW you're in the cabin watching "Mama Mia!" ;)

mattie00 Posted May 5, 2010 #32 Share Posted May 5, 2010 I agree, Doctor D! We love to watch sail-away on the pool deck, drink in hand, listening to the calypso band. I always feel that humbling moment of gratitude for my good fortune during that time. Lena, I echo your sentiments. We are doubly blessed this year with being able to afford the cruise and also being able to afford to retire.:D

DMH15 Posted May 6, 2010 #34 Share Posted May 6, 2010 I love the whole embarkation day thing. I love to get on early and be relaxing on the balcony as the latecomers arrive. Then there's the moment the ship starts to move away from the pier. My heart skips a beat. The next hour or so is my very best part of the cruise. I know I will be on my favorite kind of vacation and sailaway is just the beginning of it, of all the good times to come. Just being with family and friends. That's what's special. It doesn't matter where we are or what we are eating or drinking.
metgame24 Posted May 6, 2010 #35 Share Posted May 6, 2010 Our tradition started last year, first cruise, the Dawn...board early, lovely lunch in Venetian, back of the dining room, looking out the awesome windows, order first cocktail w/lunch. Then make our way to the top deck, look down to the pool area, hear the band, get more drinks and enjoy every minute of the sail away from NYC! Nothing like traveling under the Verrazano, passing the great Lady, and waving goodbye to home when passing Sandy Hook. Will continue this tradition this June on the Dawn again! ColinIllinois Posted May 6, 2010 #36 Share Posted May 6, 2010 Good thread. This will be my first cruise also. I think my tradition will be a drink and lots of sex. Oh wait, I'm traveling solo. Crap.

MsTabbyKats Posted May 6, 2010 #38 Share Posted May 6, 2010 Other than standing on the deck, watching NYC fade away (I've here my whole life...so my trip doesn't start until it's out of sight), we really don't have a tradition. But this year I'm going to start one...making our first meal the barbecue!

draxnair101 Posted May 7, 2010 #40 Share Posted May 7, 2010 For us, its always a great experience at sailaway!!! As soon as we board its off to Cagney's for lunch! If its NYC, then over to the Star Bar or Top Side Bar to watch the beautiful skyline fade away... If its a departure from Miami, its bubbly or wine on the balcony, just sipping our troubles away!!! nikkie5_24 Posted May 7, 2010 #41 Share Posted May 7, 2010 Oh you all have me exicted for sailing out of NYC in June. I am usually a "top deck, drink in her hand", kind of girl and since I am sailing with my big sis and it's not only her first cruise, but first tropical vacation. I think this is the tradition that will stick. I will keep the balcony ideas in mind the next time I go with someone I want to smooch. :)
